No point in living in fantasies. Time to move forward. I say we refocus on state politics. Three reasons. 1. The electoral college is won on a state by state basis. 2. If Trump is going to throw rights back to the state then having a Dem state will help neutralize that. And 3. We as mere peasants have much better chance at changing our state politics than the out of touch consultant DNC leaders at the top.
That and get Manchin and Sinema into biden's office for a very nasty "Look, you either vote for Build Back Better, or we will eject you from the party, and campaign HEAVILY in your state to make sure that everyone knows you voted against giving them a raise and all these other good/important things, and spend the next year telling the media how you betrayed your people and party."

Relying on norms was absurd in 2016. 2016 was the year that I realized that most democracies (most constitutions even) rely on good-faith actors and handshake agreements, not actual, codified, constraining laws. Some "emergency" or "extreme-scenario" loophole ends up allowing bad-faith actors, e.g. Trump and co., to do basically whatever.

Garland was definitely a BIG mistake, but not the first one. I'd argue it goes back much further: -everyone ganging up behind Biden against Bernie -waiting to impeach Trump the first time, and weakening the charges at Nancy Pelosi's request -not stonewalling every single thing Trump and the GOP tried to do for 4 years, even if it meant shutting down the government (in other words, use their own tactics against them) -installing Hillary Clinton as the nominee in 2016, especially when she and Bill were the ones who encouraged Trump to run in the first place -doing nothing when McConnell held the Supreme Court vacancy an entire year -compromising against themselves in 2009 until the ACA was weakened to a shell of what it was supposed to be... just like Build Back Better. And lo and behold, it lost them Congress back then too. And a million more little things here and there going all the way back to at least the Bill Clinton years, probably further.

Both Federal and State minimum wage is $7.25/hr. in Pennsylvania. The last time it was raised was in 2009 and was only raised 0.30¢. When I was in middle school in the early 90s minimum wage was $5.15/hr. In almost 33 years wages have only increased by $2.10/hr or $84/wk for a 40 hour work week. My apartment was only $500/mo 20 years ago. Now it's $3000/mo for a one bedroom place. This is what adhering to "norms" and backing down to any pushback has got us.

Jon Stewart impressed me as a pre-teen and younger teenager, right as I was coming in to my own as far as learning about politics while finding most of it ridiculous. He threaded that needle between informative and satirical so beautifully that he helped both teach me how parse different political topics AND gain some wit in the process. Jon Stewart inspired me as a young adult (and subsequently as a working professional/family man) when I saw him take the bull by the horns and DEMAND CONGRESS GET OFF THEIR DISINGENUOUS ASSES AND CONTINUE PROVIDING THE NECESSARY HEALTH BENEFITS TO 9/11 RESPONDERS. With all the wasteful spending in Washington, there aren’t many no-brainers in terms of “programs/policies/money we MUST keep in place” more than that bucket of money, at least not for anyone who gives a shit about the people who risked their own lives for others. What is my sacrifice? I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them_ I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!" - Luthen Rael, Andor
My response to that, would simply be... If you must become your enemy, in order to defeat your enemy... you've already lost. Morals are a set of core beliefs that can not be set aside, regardless of one's desire. That is why they are called morals, and not simply beliefs. If you are able to set them aside, they are not morals... which means you have no morals. At least your enemy was true to his beliefs... you couldn't even do that. Your delusional sense of self sacrifice only serves to stroke your own ego, all the flowery speech in the world will not change that fact. Shame on whomever raised you, you need better teachers. I'm really hoping Kamala Harris runs again in 2028, more votes have now been counted since the election & she didn't lose by much; she was only 1.6% behind in the popular vote last I checked & the swing states that went red didn't turn red by much. People getting buyer's remorse from Trump's team being beyond incompetent & screwing up white people's lives would be more than enough votes to give Kamala the primary win & the presidential win come 2028. Also, black democratic voters, especially women, can easily carry Kamala Harris through the primary, the democratic party is completely dependent on them & the other demographics don't participate much in primaries.

Democrats: "Hey! That's illegal!"
Republicans: "Yeah so."
Democrats: "Err uh well eh..."
The bottom line is that Republicans are at war so they are following no rules and doing whatever it takes to win while the Democrats act like it's a game where they have to follow all the rules. Sometimes you need somebody to wake you up and let you know that the shooting has already started. Politics is war without bloodshed and war is politics with bloodshed

Mcconnel: "you cannot appoint judges, when there is only one year left"
Obama: "ok"
Trump: *does exactly the same
Dems: "noouh, you cannot do that, as said by mcconnel"
Republicans: "yeah so?"
And that's how the cowardice and spinelessness of dems doomed us all to an entirely maga bench of judges.
Also, if Biden wants to be remembered positively as a president, he MUST find the youngest judge on planet earth and use all the dirtiest tricks in the book to put said judge in the supreme court.

No point in living in fantasies. Time to move forward. I say we refocus on state politics. Three reasons. 1. The electoral college is won on a state by state basis. 2. When Bernie lost in 2016 the first thing I said was we need to start looking for a candidate to run in 4 years right now. Glad to see at least Kyle is trying to do this now☝️
Jon Stewart has been saying he has no interest in running for office for ages... trust me, tons of people have tried to convince him. Maybe he'll come around -- who knows? The need is dire, and the dems would have a tough time silencing or sidelining somebody of his cultural stature.
@@ssaberwolf The fact that he doesn't want to be president makes him even more appropriate for the job. A truly good, thoughtful, empathetic, intelligent man who has deep political knowledge? Remember too, the Dems had a super majority during Obama's (second?) term, and DID NOTHING WITH IT.
The GOP had a majority in the senate at the time. Never mind the norm that the president picks the next supreme judge. The democrats should have realised at the time that the rules had changed. Fundamentally Biden is out of his time. The politics today do not match his sensibilities.

I only agree with your last sentence. They continue paying lip service and you continue believing it.
When they go low, we go lower. That should be the democratic mindset

Jon enjoys being a comedian, and I don't think anyone supporting him would want or ask him to leave this behind, it could actually help to have a funny and knowledgeable president to explain the issues we face instead of giving us the same old status quo establishment corpo speak nonsense of a lot of the Democratic party, and I would think he'd have to run as a Dem, as popular as he is, I just can't see him being anything but a popular spoiler that ends up helping Republicans, even if the campaign/vision is great and what we need.
The first mistake was Merrick Garland for Attorney General.
Garland was definitely a BIG mistake, but not the first one. I'd argue it goes back much further:
-everyone ganging up behind Biden against Bernie
-waiting to impeach Trump the first time, and weakening the charges at Nancy Pelosi's request
-not stonewalling every single thing Trump and the GOP tried to do for 4 years, even if it meant shutting down the government (in other words, use their own tactics against them)
-installing Hillary Clinton as the nominee in 2016, especially when she and Bill were the ones who encouraged Trump to run in the first place
-doing nothing when McConnell held the Supreme Court vacancy an entire year
-compromising against themselves in 2009 until the ACA was weakened to a shell of what it was supposed to be... just like Build Back Better.

Yep. This is why so many withheld their vote against democracy; they're more concerned with their own livelihood instead of the safety of marginalized groups. Same thing for rightists.
You do know that only 1% of hourly workers actually make minimum wage. It pretty much Increased by itself. Hell Local McDonald's are paying 11-13 per hr depending, also pretty much every local factory is paying around 20 give or take a dollar.
My caps lock was not broken, I’m just never going to say or write that any other way besides shouting as loud as I possibly can. It’s utterly ridiculous that anyone had to convince (no, excuse me; shame) so-called Patriotic Americans who also happen to run the government that 9/11 responders “deserve” whatever support they need in perpetuity. With all the wasteful spending in Washington, there aren’t many no-brainers in terms of “programs/policies/money we MUST keep in place” more than that bucket of money, at least not for anyone who gives a shit about the people who risked their own lives for others.
And now, Jon Stewart, I need you do ONE more thing for me/us good sir…

He and I are absolutely not the only ones and I’d go a step further- his and my demographic from an age perspective (at least) would be the lifeblood of his campaign. "The Senate will stop it." Not if the Republicans really want to no. You only need a majority to end the filibuster and the Republicans have a majority in the senate. Does anyone really believe that calling them hypocrites will stop them from ending the filibuster?
I am Australian and we don't have a filibuster. I am not 100% sure how it works but my impression is that it stops the elected party from doing what they were elected to do,which is surely a reason to get rid of it in most cases. Not Trump obviously
@@robinantonio8870 It's an excuse to avoid doing good things, but it's never used to stop bad things. As always it's just a tool to suppress the left.
@@robinantonio8870 The Filibuster is a Senate rule where debates for a bill can be prolonged unless you have 60 vote to end the debates and pass it. Effectively, most bill require 60 votes to pass in the Senate. However, senate rules only require a simple majority (51) to change. This is what has been called the "Nuclear option". And yes I agree this shouldn't be a thing in a functioning Democracy. However the Republicans would end it not to respect Democracy but probably to pass bill that would undermine it.

Jon Stewart's show should be required viewing at the democrats next meeting, in the president's next meeting with cabinet members, and shared with all legislative departments.
This is the level of intensity those left in office fighting should be at:
"What do you sacrifice?" "Calm. Kindness. Kinship. Love. I've given up all chance at inner peace. I've made my mind a sunless place. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there's only one conclusion: I'm damned for what I do. My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my eagerness to fight; they've set me on a path from which there is no escape.
_I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down there was no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my sacrifice? I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them_
I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!"
- Luthen Rael, Andor
That was the best scene in the season
My response to that, would simply be...
If you must become your enemy, in order to defeat your enemy... you've already lost. Morals are a set of core beliefs that can not be set aside, regardless of one's desire. That is why they are called morals, and not simply beliefs. If you are able to set them aside, they are not morals... which means you have no morals. At least your enemy was true to his beliefs... you couldn't even do that. Your delusional sense of self sacrifice only serves to stroke your own ego, all the flowery speech in the world will not change that fact. Shame on whomever raised you, you need better teachers. True greatness, is sacrificing your patience and ego, and finding a way to accomplish your goals without abandoning who you are. "Do, or do not... there is no try" - Yoda.
@ The best out of a lot of other insanely good ones.
@@blindvisionary415 True as perfectly illustrated by the character Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whittaker. Luthen’s end game was to wake people up and unite them towards defeating this darkness instead of trying to scrape to survive under its boot like some countries do today. Every action HE took was to bring about this awakening through means he preferred not do but felt he had to.
Will you follow the laws when those laws are twisted to bring about atrocities and injustice? I for one will not.
@@SCOTTEDM Oh I get it, I'm all for revolution... I'm just not for "revolutions" that just replace one tyrant with another. And if you become that which you are trying to replace, how are you any different, why shouldn't someone simply replace you? Critical Thinking... keeps you from falling for romanticized BS, like sacrificing yourself for someone else's ego.
Jon Stewart SHOULD run for office. Period.
IDK about that. He was talking to Heather Cox Richardson about needing to bring in a MODERATE Dem to run for president being a great idea.

The Supreme Court has no problem ditching any Constitutional provision it doesn't happen to agree with for political reasons. Like the first half of the 2nd Amendment, like presidential immunity, like Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Republicans play hardball, Democrats play wiffleball.
How about republicans are corrupt and democrats are not
dems aren't even doing that these days... they're building sand castles at third base
And what do progressives do? Fight the fash? Since when?
There was a poll that just came out and most democrats said they would vote for Harris again. Nothing against Harris. I voted for her but she lost. We need someone like Jon Stewart. We need someone who could tear into maga.
I didn't like some of the policy she was touting but I honestly don't think she would've been a bad president (without doing a comparison to Trump).
And yes, we absolutely need a guy like Stewart, in that they can recognise and talk about what is wrong with both parties, at least acknowledge that corporate power is the real problem and that can talk in an unscripted manner.
@@capdyn735Harris would be a good President. She has a backbone to go with experience & ethics.
Odd isn't it? The left runs women and won't support them enough to defeat a known rapist, and then starts acting like the Democratic Party chooses the government and not them.
One thing they could've done was not let Bill Barr in. After his part in Iran Contra they should've hollered at the top of their lungs. Then the whole Mueller report wouldn't have been redacted.
the democratic party needs to stop trying to do what republicans do better, they're trying to appeal to people who have someone to vote for instead of wondering why a third of the population doesn't bother
Kyle, your support of Stewart might snowball into a real movement, one that I would back. You have a reasonably strong following here, and those folks spread this support, and it grows. Keep at it. And he may give us a fighting chance in a few years.
"Fighting with their hands tied behind their backs"
It's interesting that you chose that parable. Several European members of NATO have been super frustrated with Biden's administration since the past spring because that's what they have forced Ukrainians to do, not only by putting restrictions on their defense but also by blocking European initiatives to send military aid (UK, France, Sweden) or down Russian missiles in their own airspace (Poland, Romania, Latvia).
Democrats just don't know how to deal with these challenges when the other side isn't playing according to the rules.
