My Ace is 10 inches, male, has an 81L tank (17 gallons), which came with a filter that suits it (not a big current). Also a large water cooler that originally had a large water flow, so I cut holes in the tubs to distribute the force. It was left to cycle 8 weeks before I put the plants in, then we got Ace the next week. Usually the tank is 16C or 17C. I check the Ph levels 2 or 3 times a week, to keep it between 7.4 and 7.6 (Axolotl Ph levels). I don't use the lights in my tank unless I'm changing some water out- which is when Ace isn't in there. He has many hiding places, including his favourite barrel. He has mainly a pallet food, but also frozen food (worms, oysters, etc.) that's specifically for axolotls. Nice information. Took a little worry away from my water temperature. We have tarantulas and tropical stuff so I keep my ac/heater at 75F degrees. This is obviously too warm for an axolotl tank. for my tanks i got a couple ice cube trays from the dollar store and make ice cubes out of de chlorinated water and about a tray twice a day kept my tanks at the ideal range during the summer heat warnings
If that works for you, then that's great. Seems like too much maintenance for me though. With the fan I don't have to manage the temperature constantly.
I've had my little guy for almost a month now and while he's still young, he's about 7 inches long. I know he's eaten worms before and the second time I fed him, I gave him a large nightcrawler cut in half (first time was pellets) and he happily ate a full half, but wasn't interested in the other. Since then, he hasn't been willing to eat nightcrawlers, no matter how small I cut them up. He tries, and he's really excited to try, but always spits them back out again. Any tips?
My axolotl still to this day doesn’t like nightcrawlers either. Sometimes she will eat red wigglers but not often. She does like frozen bloodworms, but she’s so big she eats an entire cube at once, so I only feed her those a couple times a week. I also feed her sinking carnivore pellets. Hikari makes a good high quality pellet that is appropriate for axolotls. If you do decide to go with a pellet food, avoid off brand foods that contain a lot of filler, go with a high quality, high protein, carnivore pellet.
@@JeremyGoneWildPets what percentage would you classify as high protein? Also, he has eaten nightcrawlers before, he just won't anymore and I don't know why
Maybe the nightcrawlers are too thick, not just too long. Have you tried cutting them the long way to make them thinner? The Hikari pellets I recommend are 47% protein. You don’t have to get those per-se, just get the highest protein you can find. Anything below 30% protein you should probably avoid.
@@JeremyGoneWildPets hi, just wanted to update, I have gotten him to eat some half worms--I guess he just wasn't hungry enough before. I always have my pellets on hand though, just in case, because sometimes he's only willing to eat the smaller pellets. Speaking of the pellets though, how many do you think would be sufficient for an axolotl between 7 and 8 inches long? Mine has a lot of vision problems, so I always have to drop the pellets one at a time right in front of him--he can't find them otherwise. I've been feeding him about 7-10 every other day or so (usually alternating back and forth between pellets and worms, but probably more often pellets) and I think he's a healthy weight, but I just don't know what I'm doing, soooo.
Amurry 24537 I can’t say an exact number of pellets, but when you view him from above, his head and his body should be the same width. That’s how you know he’s at a healthy weight. That’s good that he’s interested in worms now, though. That’s honestly the best diet for him because that’s what they eat in the wild.
Hey! Where did you get your mesh lid? I have been able to find some but is the material easy to cut through so I can get the filter tube/s coming out the top? TIA!(:
I got this lid at petco but I ended up replacing it with another one. This one was metal and it rusted after a while. Now I have a plastic lid that I drilled ventalation holes into.
I use an aqua clear designed for a 20gal in my 55 gal so that it keeps the water calm and then i do 30% water change weekly and that seems to be a good balance. if you have a Python it takes like 10 mins once a week.
I have a 45G tank and it has depth. Since heat rises, wouldnt that mean the bottom is cooler to where they prefer? I can never really tell what temperature the water is but it is fairly cooler than what thermostat of house says. I plan to get axolotl but temperature part worries me.
I can’t say for sure. I keep my tropical tanks and my axolotl tank in the same room. But I don’t heat the room to tropical temperatures, just the individual tanks that need it with aquarium heaters.
I don’t know if you see this or not but I’m giving it a try. I just got my axolotl a couple weeks ago. But I’m always afraid he is not okay. Today i walked in on him on top of one of the plants I thought he was dead but I gave him a soft poke and he woke up and swam back down immediately. Believe me I really try my best the water temp from my tank is always around 16-17 degrees Celsius. The PH value is around 7 to 7,5 I clean the aquarium once a week and I check the water every day. He eats very well but swims a lot. Also mine comes to the top to breathe I looked online and it seemed normal but now I’m worried. His gills are NOT curved also his tail is just straight. Tough today I noticed a very small sort of dent in his tail. The thing is with a dog or a cat you know when they are happy or sad. With a axolotl I find it very tough.. the tank is quite large for one axolotl I have 3 oxygen plants a cave couple of big rocks so he can walk over them and a very big wooden sort of statue. I just need some help if this is okay.. my axolotl is almost 3 months old
I would just need some assistance please. I'm getting two axolotls and I have done so much research on them, I have seen a couple times that people say feeding blood worms daily will make your axolotl obese. I just want mine to be happy and do not know the recommended amount of feeding them. Some people say they feed them daily while others say only every second day. Do you have a recommended amount for young axolotls, this being how many feeding times a day and what amount of food is needed?
Hi. Thanks for your question and for watching. I would not recommend feeding more often than once a day. Unfortunately, I can't say "you should feed a juvenile this amount of food" because as they grow you should increase their food intake. It really just depends on their size. Adults can eat one entire cube of frozen bloodworms as a meal, so a juvenile should be fed less. You can adjust how much you feed your axolotl based on if they look skinny or fat. Their body should be the same width as their head when viewed from above.
Most people feed their adult axolotl earth worms as a main meal, if they cant eat it whole cut it into to half inch to one inch peices and feed as much as the little guy will eat. They wont continue to eat if they are full. Feed them everyday. Babies need to be fed more often.
If you are opting for chilling with ice, then you should calculate the ice to water amount, i can chill my 200 liter for 3 to 4 hours with a solid 5 kg iceblock a couple of celcius and if i can keep up with exchanging the chilling elements against the thawing time i xan keep it stavle, but it is the most laborious way to do
@@JeremyGoneWildPets bin keeping these sweet little thing for about 5 years or so, amd have not had the money for proper cooling, so had to what i know i can do
Thats funny!!! Your green axo is named "Amy" ??? My 4 year-old son named his green one 'Amy' as well!! And the yellow one is named "Tails"... ue really loves Sonic the Hedgehog... obvi...
you mention they like it cold. So how do you prepare your water changes? Usually people like to let the water they are gonna put in the tank sit out for a day or two, But in this case the water would raise to a temperature too high. Are you cooling your new water before putting it in? Or are you just bringing it out of the tap at the right temperature then treating it before quickly adding it to the tank? If that is what you are doing what are you using to treat the water?
I use Prime water conditioner and bring cold water right from the tap. Prime works very quickly and seems to do well for my local water. I can’t say if that would be the best solution in your case, but for me it works well. Sometimes during the heat of summer, the temperature out of the tap can still be warmer than what’s in the tank, though. So to avoid the axolotl going into temperature shock, I set her aside in some old tank water and after the water change I temperature acclimate her. As the water sits in the tank it gradually cools over several hours.
Hey so I have an axolotl and for some reason his gills have shrunk to a pretty small size and I’m worried, any tips on what I should do to help him grow the gills back?
I think we accidentally ended up with 2 of these during our yearly spring/summer frog farm science project. We had 50 chorus frog and southern leopard frog tadpoles and 2 salamander tadpoles. The 2 salamander tadpoles were captured by accident. 6 frogs made it. Apparently the 2 salamanders grew faster than the rest of the tadpoles, and ate the other 46 tadpoles. Now I am in the process of separating the salamanders and surviving frogs into their own separate tanks. Now I'm finding out that salamanders are kinda scarce in the wild. So I'm wondering if we should keep them a while, rather than release them back into the wild (which is what we do with the frogs each year). All of these plants and animals are caught locally and released each year after their metamorphosis.
Kazia Mack-Deans the salamanders you got are probably tiger salamanders, not axolotls. Axolotls are endangered and come from one specific area in Mexico. Tiger salamanders are native to the US and look just like axolotls when they’re in their tadpole form. They will metamorphosize into terrestrial salamanders.
Sorry for the late reply. I got the shelves at Home Depot and they are rated for ~800lbs each. They held up really well. I don’t use them for fish tanks anymore though, because they did kinda bow and it scared me but they never gave out.
Greetings, I am having a really weired behavior problem with my Axalotls. I have had this pair on a 150 L tank for 2 years. One is black, the other one is an albino, that was slightly bigger when the black one was introduced. Since her eyesight is really bad, often she would nibble at him by accident on their first months togheter, but other than that they used to get along really well, beeing close all the time, climb on each other and so on. A couple months ago the black axalotl became increasily agressive, ripping her tail and a week later breaking her leg. He seen to do it on purpose, going after her just for a bite. It is not a feeding frenzy, he does it at random. I researched and found very little on Axalotl agression on the web and was wondering if you have any advice. Right now they are separate with a net on the center of their tank but i am wondering what i can do to reduce the agressions. Any ideas?
Some axolotls are best kept alone. Although it’s not common, aggression between axolotls can happen. Nipping at each other and climbing on each other are signs of aggression and dominance, and it sounds to me like it’s professed well past that. My suggestion is to keep them separated
Thank You for the information, well said!! Def Subing to this channel, I love my Axolotlts and can never learn enough about them. Yours Is Beautiful, how old is it?
Thank you. I’m not entirely sure how old Amy is. I got her in March of 2018 but she was already getting close to full grown when I got her. If I had to guess I’d say she hatched sometime in late 2017.

@@JeremyGoneWildPets WOW ! Someone on UA-cam that reads and answers their comment section! Thank you! I love your video's and content. Looking forward to the Axolotl info! Have an awesome day!
for my tanks i got a couple ice cube trays from the dollar store and make ice cubes out of de chlorinated water and about a tray twice a day kept my tanks at the ideal range during the summer heat warnings
If that works for you, then that's great. Seems like too much maintenance for me though. With the fan I don't have to manage the temperature constantly.
I stick frozen water bottles in, but being in new england ofc that was enough so i had to move the tank to the basement
Thank you so much this video really help ❤
Awsome! I’m getting one soon and this was very helpful specially the cooling thing

Now I have a plastic lid that I drilled ventalation holes into.
great video! very informative, thank you!
Thanks! This is the last bit of info I needed!
Good info..clear and direct ..thanx
I like your presentation man 😁👍
I use an aqua clear designed for a 20gal in my 55 gal so that it keeps the water calm and then i do 30% water change weekly and that seems to be a good balance. if you have a Python it takes like 10 mins once a week.
Thank you for the feedback
Great info, really enjoyed watching, I subbed awhile back and really like your content
Thanks a lot! I appreciate that!
Very helpful video thanks 👍😀👍
informative video, music sounds very twin peaks ha!
I love this so hard thank you!
I have a 45G tank and it has depth. Since heat rises, wouldnt that mean the bottom is cooler to where they prefer? I can never really tell what temperature the water is but it is fairly cooler than what thermostat of house says. I plan to get axolotl but temperature part worries me.
Will the fan helps in tropical country in a room without air conditioner? (It could get somewhere around 30 celcius)
I can’t say for sure. I keep my tropical tanks and my axolotl tank in the same room. But I don’t heat the room to tropical temperatures, just the individual tanks that need it with aquarium heaters.
Thanks for this guide really helpful
This was so helpful thank you 🙏
Ty
I'm so glad I found this cuz I will have an axoloti soon 🤣
I don’t even own one of these or plan on getting one I just watched because it’s cool
So informative. Thank you❤
This video would really benefit from time stamps. But excellent video thumbs up. 👍
I just need some help if this is okay.. my axolotl is almost 3 months old
Awesome video !
@@JeremyGoneWildPets Thank you so much for answering and your video was very very helpful. :)
Most people feed their adult axolotl earth worms as a main meal, if they cant eat it whole cut it into to half inch to one inch peices and feed as much as the little guy will eat. They wont continue to eat if they are full. Feed them everyday. Babies need to be fed more often.
If you are opting for chilling with ice, then you should calculate the ice to water amount, i can chill my 200 liter for 3 to 4 hours with a solid 5 kg iceblock a couple of celcius and if i can keep up with exchanging the chilling elements against the thawing time i xan keep it stavle, but it is the most laborious way to do
Commissar Ankerstjerne yeah that’s a lot more work than I want to put in.
And the yellow one is named "Tails"... ue really loves Sonic the Hedgehog... obvi...
I really want oneeeeee they r cute asffff
I’m getting one for Christmas :D
you mention they like it cold.
Very informative. Tyfs!
Hey so I have an axolotl and for some reason his gills have shrunk to a pretty small size and I’m worried, any tips on what I should do to help him grow the gills back?
No come on- but you are actually adorable in the things you say and how you day them
I think we accidentally ended up with 2 of these during our yearly spring/summer frog farm science project.
They need fans ? Wow, I have to tell my friend about that. He is not using them.👍😅 Great video with cool haircut.👍😀
If the room is cool enough you don't need a fan. Some people keep them in basements, for example, and get the right temps naturally.
You are so helpful
Where did you get those shelves? This was a great video, very informative. I'm having trouble keeping my tank cool
Sorry for the late reply. I got the shelves at Home Depot and they are rated for ~800lbs each. They held up really well. I don’t use them for fish tanks anymore though, because they did kinda bow and it scared me but they never gave out.
I have a bright room as I have a large window . What could I do to make sure the axolotl happy
Provide it with a place to hide. Like a cave or lots of fake plants
Jeremy Gone Wild thank you for the advice .hopefully I’ll get a axolotl next year just trying to do all the research possible before
This is exciting!!
Super helpful!
I'm glad you think so! Thank you.
I may get a axolotl for my birthday, I hope so, they cute ❤️
I have 2 axolotls in my 75 gallon. Looking to add to the family soon 😍😍
75 GALLON FOR TWO! They must love it!!
Greetings,
I am having a really weired behavior problem with my Axalotls.
