About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Glenn doing the lords work PROVING how much a speaker changes your tone!
I personally like the BV30H the most since I like that grindy top end, but the BV25M is also great. Both would be good blended I think.
Absolutely. The lead tone on the BV30H cut through better. But the BV25M had the chuggy low mids. Blending the 2 would sound quite full.
Good call. Blending them would be awesome. Maybe even layer all 3. But if left with one choice the M is the one
ALL were an improvement! The 30H had the best clarity overall. Clean sounds SHOULD have been considered as well, as not all speakers to both types of signals well!
(UNLESS they're LORANTZ speakers of course! )
I started watching this video in my car as I was waiting for some heavy weather to pass so I could drive on, and the difference between the original speakers and the upgrades is clear even on a phone speaker. When watching the video again through some decent monitors, it is even more incredible. My fav is the BV30H, that speaker sounds fantastic!
Thank you, Glen, you have save me so much money over the last couple of years it is ridiculous. I just ordered some Mojotone BVs.
100% freaking awesome breakdown and logic here. Speakers make a massive difference. Damn, I love these type of vids. Crushing it.
That blueback V30 sounds great!!!Thanks Glenn for the awesome content.👍
This is why I love this channel. I know a LOT of (mostly useless) information about guitars, but up until about a year ago, the only thing I knew about amps was how to turn them on.
So awesome. I have a Marshall 4 x 12. It has the evh, bv 25m, swamp thing and stock celestial speaker in it (waiting on a Hesu demon)
That one cab, coupled with a multitude of mics and I’m overwhelmed with tone choices. It’s a lot of fun.
Johan and Glenn. Both are my “go to” for speaker stuff. 🤘🤘
Always great info and screaming, love it!
Finally someone who makes the bassline audible in their mixes
Great demonstration Glenn!! I personally installed a DV-77 couple years back into my combo from a V30, and it sounds amazing, a lot more focused. Love these combos, very versatile if you work with it.
I loved this amp. One of the best combo amps ever.
Mojotone makes amazing speakers. Love the greyhounds and the British vintage series. The Bv-25ms rival my amazing vintage celestions. The greyhounds sound incredible with just about every high gain amp I’ve recorded through them
I replaced some V30s with WGS speakers and love them, but then I discovered the greyhounds and now I want a cab with those
@@Gainovermg yeah the greyhounds cover some of the ground that V30s do, but they actually work for cleans, and don’t have that spikey upper midrange. It’s like all the stuff I like in a V30 without the drawbacks. My bandmate has an invective and we couldn’t believe how great 2 greyhounds and 2 creamback M75s sound together with that amp.
Would you suggest to pair a greyhound with a V30. I would like to try this combo but i don't know if this will sound awesome together
I got a pair of the anthems
They Rock hard
The combo amp is actually pretty good. Some people don’t like the stock speaker but I think it sounds just fine once you dial in your tone.
I was looking forward to this video and it didn't disappoint. All three tones are worthy of use, but if I had to choose one, I'd pick the 30V.
What Ièm loving is the bass tone! WTF? It's freaking amazing! We need a video on how to get that killer bass tone!
Thank you for the video! Love you sharing all your knowledge
Yes!! Hey Glen I really appreciate you pushing MoJo. My younger brother Andrew has been with them since they were in a shop behind the owners house. Aside of working with the signature artist, and content creators he is on the R&D for alot of their products including speakers. I remember testing the B30s in Andrews garage when they were still in the development stages.
Andrew is a metal guitar player at heart, They got the sauce they thats for sure.
Love the show, long time fan here.
This is absolutely an A+ video. I don’t like the idea of luging around (or paying for) a cabinet in addition to a combo. Seeing exactly how to put a new speaker in, and hearing the difference between the two is GREAT.
This is actually pretty cool how you show people all this. I'm interested in doing this. Very interested, it's done on a budget, but with a huge reward. Thank you.
My pleasure! Next episode I’m turning it into a head!
My 1971 Marshall cabinet with G 12 M’s is a freaking awesome speaker that brings home the mojo, I’ve tried others and kept coming back to it… Keep on rockin
I’ve got some 1977 Blackbacks that are ridiculously awesome! Definitely a fan of the old g12m series!!
Dude! DUDE! That tone on the playthrough?! That is killer!
That phase cancelling segment was insane! I liked the brightness of the V for leads, but maybe overpowering for rhythm. The H and M both sounded great to my ears.
I'm not really in the market for an amp at the moment, but looking forward to the next video on using it as a head. BTW the MUG arrived - thank you Glenn!
As a cab builder who uses Mojotone speakers- I love them! My builds usually have BV-30Hs or Greyhounds in them. But some of my absolute favorite mixes came from the 30V and their Watchtower greenbacks.
I really do want to try out the watchtowers!
That's my sound! I prefer using an amp that has more watts than the speaker. It is great to hear it in a quality mix. Your videos are a gem to the metal community! Keep up the good work!
Glenn, I literally just found and bought a used 6505+ today for no other reason than to try this because of how neat it sounds after watching this video yesterday. I told myself I wouldn't do anything with a 5150 or anything in its direct family and what you demonstrated actually made me reconsider it. If nothing else, it will be a neat project amp and I'm stoked to swap out the speaker (I know it's a little thing but it's always weirded me out since I thought soldering would be involved and that's a skill I never actually developed). Thanks man! :)
This will help! ua-cam.com/video/7OiZrWiJUx8/v-deo.html
Gorgeous guitar. Love the inlays. 🤟
All the speakers they sent you sounded solid but I’m with you, Glenn-that 25 ripped! Cool guitar, too. Love my LTDs. All the best!
You're an excellent teacher and this video went right to the cerebellum. Thanks!
I’ve had this combo for about 9 years, ended up chopping it up to remove the cab (basically giving me a 60w head) and no reasonable amount of money could make me part with it it’s amazing
😜🤘Never ending Classic Amp!!! Probably on just as many Metal Albums as a Mesa Boogie 👽👀
Glen! Thanks for making this video. I don't know if you saw my comment on your first video of the 6505 combo, I had suggested this very test. As I had said, if the room is small, often a small combo sounds bigger than a half-stack even WITH metal tones. Sometimes there just isn't enough space in the room to get all that air moving by a long-throw 4X12. Thanks for the video. I thought it would be a great option. Now you have scientifically proved it. Thank you Glen!
Honestly, I’d have to shoot it out against a 4x12 for there to be any valid science to it, but it did sound pretty great in the mix!
Love that paint job
I've had a 6505 for a long time and I've honestly wondered why it's never really sounded right. Really appreciate this video Glenn.
Have you broken in the speaker? Makes a big difference imo.
Throw a Celestion Creamback 65 in it and you'll swear it's a totally different amp.
Excellent advice when you said the Sheffield speaker sucked. I tried to like it back in the day and wanted to like it but quickly found out it was inferior to fane, celestion, and eminence models. THE SPEAKER IS THE FILTER. YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD AND PUT THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN. You've single handedly made us guitar players everywhere {that have 30+ years of experience} happy. And hopefully some young-uns too. You deserve more business sir.!!
I’m actually excited to see your next video on how to turn this into a head. I’ve been debating getting one, but I have so many combos and not enough space for them.
hook up a 1/4" jack to the speaker wire, plug cable from 1/4 jack to cab, make sure your ohms are correct.
@@haydenkayne i know how to hook it into a separate cabinet. I was hoping he meant actually putting it into a head instead of keeping the whole combo cabinet.
I don't have a 6505 combo so I won't be doing a speaker replacement, but the laser pointer tip was worth it's weight in gold.
Im a big fan of Mojotone. A few years back, I built one of their DIY JCM800 clones. The thing slaps.
I just picked one up used with a cabinet for 400 bucks. Thing sounds fucking amazing
literally just bought this for my first real amp like a month ago, it's amazing
Next level product placement mate!🤘🤘
The bv25 is my favourite, that grind is lovely
Nice! I have been guilty of not using anything but Mesa or Orange cabs. But there is a ton of good gear that won't break the bank. Definitely a good time to be a player.
Sounds friggin awesome man
That 25m sounded freaking amazing. I may have to try that out at some point
Just as a side note: speaker polarity only matters when using multiple speakers. If you switch the polarity on one speaker, it will be in opposite phase to the other and cancel it out. The same is true when using multiple amps and/or cabs: make sure the polarity is identical on all of them. When this is your only amp, the polarity on the speaker matters not.
Ive been checking those exact speakers out! Those and the hellatones!
I love the 30H sound! I like the top end clarity without slashing the ears. The M sounds kinda hollow, maybe? I've been looking for a speaker to swap the crappy one that my Marshall combo comes with, but I'm certain this one will gwt the job done.
9:50 I actually prefer the sheffield. But then again my favourite speaker is the T75, which everyone shits on nowadays despite it having been used on a billion classic metal records
Yeah I have two Marshall quads loaded with them from that era when I brought the cabs. One thing I really like about them is that each quadbox is rated in total at 300 watts with them inside! Would I ever run a 300 watt per channel power amp into them? Probably not, but it gives one confidence that you're not gonna pop it!
Maybe it’s because i grew up playing thru em but I like my G12T-75s . I know it’s not the industry preferred driver but I know how it responds and I like it’s or I’m used to it’s flavor.
My current drivers are in a Sunn 412 that toured as a bass cab for years before I got it.
The G12T-75 is a good speaker, the bad reputation comes mainly from people not knowing how to use them. Like every other Celestion speaker, its sound shifted in different eras, probably due to production choices. I love how it sounds combined with a good Greenback, they're from the same heritage so they mix well, however it adds depth in the low end and bite in the high end, while the Greenback dominates the midrange.
Hah I'm doing a retro version of this and was thinking of swapping out the Sheffield in my bandit 112 for a Seventy Eighty or something of a different brand so cool to hear a new to me brand of speaker. Keep up the sciencey stuff 😂
I have 3 mojo tone 12" greyhound 70 watch and about an 8" anthem by mojo tone . These speakers are fantastic . Great video
Been gigging with the 6505+ 112 for years and it hasn’t done me wrong yet. My old 6505+ head is a studio queen now haha
Dang Glenn really made djentlike instrumental sound more like it came from the 80s.
Love it. Sounds more natural. I get tired of the wall of ambience and hyper-processed sounding drums with djent production.
That's the sound he likes, so power to him. I would say he nailed it! Hahah
Ain't he the best
I dig it
It doesn't djent at all and that's a good thing
This was a tight video Glenn. Upping the game again on the video work, and scripting!
I have a Mojotone BV30H paired with my Greenback and I like the pairing. Great speaker for not a lot of money.
Appreciated the Priest riffage when you started playing
I love the tube Vypyr amps. The 60 watt combo does great for 6505 and JSX tones.
this is actually a great sound !
I just loaded the mojotone Anthem....Dude these are crazy good.....this dude speaks truth
Speakers are what matter! Those BVM's sound freaking awesome! I wish I would have learned how MUCH MORE IMPORTANT SPEAKERS really are! DAMN! I sold my Peavey combo because it never sounded that great- EDUCATION CAN BE EXPENSIVE.....great stuff man!!! I am subbed!
this video annihilates any argument against the amount of sonic change one can expect from swapping speakers. good on you, Glen! this argument can now be laid to rest.
I own that amp. the speaker alone is not enough of an upgrade. what worked for me and blew me away I changed the internal speaker cable with a monster cable and the amp came to life and the sound is orgasmic
I’ve got one of the 212 combos cut into a head, and let me say. This is totally true. I have tried it will several different cabs, and the speaker is definitely the factor holding it back. I’ve got an older Peavey 2x12 cab from the 80’s with black widows and it’s a much more solid Peavey cab for about half what you’ll pay for a new one.
The BV-30H sound hella nice. Crisp like I like it!
Glen, after watching your first video on this amp I decided it was time to leave behind the solid state Marshall I've been playing since high school and get a big boy amp. On your advice I bought one of these for $400. The sound was disappointing at first, which I knew might be the case ahead of time knowing what you had said about the speaker and what I had read about the speaker on forums. The original speaker is not even a real Sheffield, as Sheffields are made in the USA, and this is made somewhere in China. After changing out what I assume were the original preamp tubes (V1 and V5 were toast) things definitely improved. And most importantly, I got a new speaker made at the factory in Eminence, KY, about an hour from my house. Now, it sounds like a real amp! Fronting it with a tube screamer clone really helped too.
I found the original speaker to be muffled and ice picky. If you like a cheap knock off of a green back with scooped mids (on an amp known for its mids) really fizzy highs, and farty lows, the original speaker may be fine for you. As for me, my 6505+ proudly wears an "Eminence inside" badge! Lots of people have replaced the speakers in these with a V30, or with an Eminence Governor or Swamp Thang. I didn't do any of those, because I didn't want to sound like everybody else! But what I did put in there sounds good.
You haven't mentioned this in either of your two videos on this amp, but I think it is important for people to know there is a bit of an issue with the FX loop. It is not transparent. Many people complain about it, but some people like it better. However, this can be fixed very cheaply if you are any good at soldering and know what parts of the amp to stay away from so you don't get shocked and die.
As a side note, because a certain angry, long-haired Canadian would have told me to, I did an A/B test. I'm glad I did too, because at first I couldn't tell much difference between the speakers, but listening back to back shows they are quite different. Let me know if you want the files Glen, and I'll send them to you.
Thanks! Loving the new amp!
Love the Priest riffs ❤❤❤
For years I ran my guitar through my 1st gen script version 5150 head into a 15" Peavey Black Widow speaker cab. It always sounded great for what I was looking for. Pictures hanging on the wall didn't stand a chance when the chugs hit.
BV30V was definitely my favorite of the three. Although I wonder if adding the bv30h and the bv30v to same cab could make for an interesting sound.
I have a Celestion G12K-100 in mine. Love it.
That upper-mid grind of the BV25M is very reminiscent of the Celestion G12M Legacy/Heritage series (not the G12M Anniversary, which is a different beast). One of my all-time favourite speakers.
I played through those sheffield speakers when I got my 6505 and it sounded like a blanket was over the cab. I ended up buying a randall cab with Jaguar 60s. It was so much better than everything else.
Thanks for your channel
that some solid playing Glen....
GOATED Kyuss t shirt. also the V sounds the best
Great video.
I picked up a 6505 plus combo for $200
And turned into an amp head and wrapped it in purple tolex.
Cool!!
One of my only regrets as a young lad was faced with a selection between Black Widow and Sheffield, I thought the font looked more refined so I thought the Sheffield would have a more refined sound. Maybe it sounds better after being in storage for a few decades. Tone crafting molds and spores perhaps.
I was lucky enough to be able to try one through a Marshall quad. So I hooked into one straight away. :)
Nice. It sounds like a Marshall cab. I dig the bb 25. Very old-school
When you talk about creating new tones by stayong clear of Celestions, I couldnt agree more. I LOVE the tone of Eminence Speakers. Id love to.see you put a set through thier paces and see your thoughts
Thanks for bringing some mayhem back to the metal sound, blow some minds! 😜
I like the BV30V the best; it has the clarity and top end I feel I'd need to give my sound an edge.
hey Glenn, one question. Would it be possible with a 4x12 box and 2 different speaker types to get the sound live like on the Clayman album. So for example V30 and a greenback or another. One speaker that is more high and hash tone, the another with more bass and fuller. Because you said there were 2 mics packed together. Is it possible to reproduce it in this way ?
Great info brother. Perfect former those of us who have t got a ton of $$
recently i bought some jensen and vgs speakers and like you said diferences are huge
I have a PRS MT15 and run that through the PRS-MT112…….but I pulled the V30s out and replaced with Eminence DV77. Love my sound! ESP EC1000 with Dimebucker to Maxon OD808 to MT15 with ISP Decimator and Sonic Stomp in the FX Loop. Simple earth rattling tone. Wanted a Cockblocker but was late to the order and now I just can’t find one.
Blues for the red sun, very nice shirt.
One of my favorite records!!!
I think that M and H would blend great in a 212 cab. Makes me want one 🤘
Lately I started recording cabinets (loaded with classics V30) with a Behringer XM8500, a €30 microfone that is a little more acid than an SM57, and I love it! I play black metal and I find it perfect, I suggest you to try it by yourself, trist me you'll not regret it!
Also I mic'd by putting the microphone center at the joint between the cone and the cup
I hear ya, fellow Hamiltonian. I have one of those combos. Not a "Shitfield" fan either. Always use an external cab lol. Awesome video!
I'd also suggest a Celestion 150 watt Redback. I threw one into a Mesa Mark IV combo. When tweaked carefully there's no need to move the amp into a heads hell. A combo along with a second 1x12 closed back cabinet kicks BUTT. You can spread them out for a wide sound.
Hey Glenn, just wanted to say hope you and your family stay safe from the fires.
We’re nowhere close, but thank you, it’s sincerely appreciated!
I really like the BV30H.
For the longest while I thought my 5150 combo was shitty sounding because i bought it used. Thought it was just the speakers being old or something but NOOOOPE. it was the damn shitfield. even opened it and saw the stickers on the back. might get a pair of the BV25M's for it, cuz man I really need the upgrade. Thank goodness for SMG's videos because it has really made me change my approach to just choosing what is right for upgrades. Keep up the amazing work!
Good luck, dude! Enjoy the upgrade!
MOJOTONE TO THE RESCUE AGAIN!!!
Great amp no doubt, thx for helping out people Glan by showing them a Gem. ROCK on!
I have a fucking guitar and free amp sims and i have been following this marvelous guy for ages! Cant do a shit about what he recommends, but still love him. Because of him, I could at least plug my guitar to the damn computer and lay down aome tracks. I am easily amused so they sounded great to me! Someday i gotta thank you in person Glen!!
This is the Glenn we all show up for 🙌
Thanks for coming by!
Awesome amp
I'd pick the BV25M just because it fits the kind of heavy stuff I'm writing. But it might be cool to do a 4x12 or 2x12 with a mix of the M and H, especially for recording, so you could blend the heaviness and the brightness together to dial things in even more.
My 2x12 cab has some custom built Ted Weber Legacys in it that my buddy consulted me on buying, and then ended up selling to me cuz he got a vintage Traynor amp and cab. Every amp I've plugged into it (and I tried quite a few) all agreed. They like the Weber speakers A LOT and so do I.
I still really want to check those out!
