I don't think Rocky Horror's appeal is something that everyone would enjoy, but I really like it. It's not because the movie is good, per se, but it's very fun and shameless in its badness. The songs are really catchy, the humor is so sincere that it actually lands a fair number of times, and any limitations in budget are offset by the fact that everybody in this movie seems aware of how ridiculous it all is and they just roll with it. And seeing it live with the fan community present makes it better, because there are all these rituals that they do during the movie and a really witty crowd will shout things over the movie that are way funnier than anything actually in Rocky Horror. I'm not necessarily trying to sell you on it. It's still a bad movie by conventional standards and that's going to be deal breaker for a lot of people. But if you can accept that a movie as flaws and not be too distracted by them, there's a lot of good parts to be found.
I think it's just not for everyone. It's pure, unadulterated camp, that sort of thing doesn't always appeal to everybody. It's pretty niche. But none of the Rocky Horror fans I've met were watching it for the representation, they just thought it was silly and fun, and the experience of watching it as a group seems to have this wild community around it that people get really into. Personally, apart from a few catchy songs, it does nothing for me, but hey. Different strokes.
It’s a shame that people crave representation so much they’re willing to sit through that garbage.
