My personal observation on the most addictive snacks is how they change in your mouth. You briefly mentioned it, but Chips start full of spice and crunch but by the time you are done chewing they are flavorless mush, so you take another one to get the flavor back.
Yep!! They're designed to have this explosion of flavor that swiftly tapers off to nothing, so you go back for another. You get lots of flavor, but little to no satiety so it becomes easy to plow through a bag of chips (not that I have personal experience with that 😅)
I like chips and salsa. The salsa just barely convinces my brain that it's relatively healthy despite the fact that I'm shoving fried, salted corn chips into my mouth. :P
Well, there are also a portion of scientists studying this in order to trigger this response as much as possible. I remember when the cigarette companies had their huge settlements several decades ago, many of their researchers moved over into food products. There is a reason that so much of our food in the grocery store is stuff full of extra sugar. Obviously sugar and processing byproducts like some veggie/seed oil are dirt cheap so they are thrown in to products to "fluff" the product up. But it is a double positive for the unethical companies: cheap products that induce an addictive response in the human brain.
This seems like a cool series! I'd love to see the science behind food preparation methods and why certain things we do are scientifically effective or what's going on a molecular level or something :). Also as a vegan I would love if your future videos would include a vegan perspective! Food is near and dear to my heart but it's hard to watch food content sometimes because everything is always from a carnivors perspective.
Absolutely no need to eat any junk food. I eat zero junk food. I include all bakery fare in the junk food category. One year I grew Danvers Half Long carrots. The fresh carrots were so superior to any carrots available at any supermarket or produce store, it was like eating a different product. My observation is that supermarket carrots are palatable only if cooked.
Really interesting, I´ve been wondering why alot of ppl crave so much sugary things, I don´t know if it´s due to my Autism or genetics that I´m not a fan of sugar, I tend to stay away from sweet things (mostly, sure I have some sweets here and there, but never much) I don´t like how my body and brain feels like after alot of sugar (same with caffeine) My cravings are more food and fruit related, no bananas tho, too sweet...I do have a weak spot for cheese however...
Cheese isn’t a weak spot it’s part of an ancestrally appropriate human diet. Raw dairy is something we more recently added into our diets but it’s clear that it’s full of viable nutrients.
Trying to cut all processed sugar or processed foods with added sugar out of my snack and foodz choices... Lately my favorite snacks has been raw celery or carrots dipped in sugar-free peanut butter I get at trader joes... trader joes also has really good %100 chocolate chips that I sprinkle into a handful of raw cashews. ^_^
@@SherilRKirshenbaum Yeah, between that... going vegan... and doing intermittent fasting... I've totally seen a huge improvement in my health in the last several blood tests and such that I've done, for sure~! ^_^
@@idraote I avoid those products with "fake sugar" too... for sure! Always reading the ingredient labels. Thankfully the peanut butter and chocolate chips I mentioned are both %100 single ingredient products containing only peanuts and cacao... no artificially added "sweet" taste at all. >_o
Okay, so maybe the question is why does she think we don't like ripe bananas? Her banana looked great. My father would probably say it needs an extra 2 days.
perhaps the body is in need of those specific compounds, and the craving is a manifestion of their depletion. -look into malic acid. it's very sour, and is a required fuel source in the ATP process. Granny Smith Apples are extremely high in malic acid, try juicing 1 apple with 3 carrots and a lemon wedge.
Appreciate the focus on health, but please be considerate of the misophoniacs in the audience! Not all of us follow the "crunch is good" hypothesis. 🤢 Nor the swallowing, gulping or smacking... 🤮

same with gum, soda, etc.

Thanks PBS, that was funny and interesting! Y'all even threw a Wilhelm scream in there 😂
Credit goes to our wonderful editing team! I'll pass that along 😀

While researching this episode, I came a across a lot about marketing and the research to keep us coming back.
Came here from It's Okay To Be Smart (I refuse to shorten that excellent name!) and I like what I see so far! And hear - the Wilhelm Screams are cute.
Thanks and welcome! ☺️
0:01 Excuse you, but my food loves me! No matter how much bigger I get, it sticks with me. Loyalty!
😆
"I don't like this I'm not gonna let it break down in my mouth" lol... brilliant :)
And I did not 😆
I really liked the asides and bloopers spliced in. Adds character.
🤔 or it ads dopamine?!?
I give them a lot of outtakes to work with 😆

Skeetles and M&Ms chocolate, at the same time. Also pieces of ginger and chocolate, it's amazing.
I'm with you on the second one 😊
Good edits, funny, and educational. Nice job, guys!
Why thank you ☺️
@Hypocritical Critic nice, but I expected your critique to be hypocritical. LOL
My guilty pleasure are fast food french fries. The crispier the better. I give Mcdonald’s and Freddy’s way too much of my money. 😔
And they must have salt! 🧂
I'm drinking a milkshake as I watch this.
It was a very good milkshake!
I just had a creamy, sweet, vanilla and strawberry gourmet popsicle
Soft bananas are the sweetest. And crunchy bananas are disgusting, they are unripe and sticky on the teeth.
I’m firmly in the “no bananas” camp.
Before I forget, "Be Smart" sent me here. 🤪
Thanks Joe! We’re old friends ☺️
Our mutual friend from PBS Be Smart bring me here. Not disappointed

I do enjoy a good carrot. Although admittedly a good cookie too ☺
Millions $$$ are spent by the Frankenfood industries to determine the “Bliss Point.” This insures that we will overeat the products.
Yes on heaps of $$$ spent to keep us buying more food/products. But if you mean GMOs, that's... complicated.
@@SherilRKirshenbaum , yes, I was referring to the adjusted sugar salt ratio, etc. Like with Doritos or Oreos. LOL

pay attention to sugar free products. They often contain artificial sweeteners that are quite bad for your health.

Eating a BLT as I watch this!
One of my favorite sandwiches 🥪
Before watching: isn't the trigger of most of these, like sugar, because it was so incredibly much harder to come by as we evolved?
Yes and no. There are so many reasons to crave sweet 🍭

More yes than no. You basically give the same reasoning in this video.
