The candle routine was an affectionate throwback to the ending of BBC2's first night proper, or second night including the one that ended awkwardly due to a power cut. Denis Tuhouy held a candle which he blew out at the end of that first night in jest.
@mbvideoselection i remember Denis Tuohy on the itv morning news
I'm surprised to hear the phrase "Britain's multicultural society" being used so early on!
This was the first closedown without a Channel 4 clock or ident or the Fourscore music not to be played til the next day or later in 1982.
paul coia BTW works at smooth radio, and 26 years on 4 is the best television station in britain, the range of us imports it shows just can't be beat and it is the best
I wonder what Paul Coia,Olga Hubrishka,Keith Harrison and David Stranks-the original C4 announcers are doing now?
I wish C4 would get back to doing that they did best: making programs that annoy the establishment. C4 made some groundbreaking series, and now its just reality TV and various other rubbish. Its not that I'm getting old, but stuff like Queer as Folk, Brass Eye, etc that made headlines. That's what we want - not cheap rubbish. Same goes for BBC - they should close down BBC News 24 and a few other channels and spend the money on quality, not quantity.
The glory days of Channel 4 are over. The poaching of the BBC's comfy Great British Bake Off proves that point. Pulling in over 7 million viewers is seen as a success, but the only success there is in providing a mass appeal programme to a mass audience. Channel 4's successes should be in providing quality programming to minority audiences who are otherwise not catered for elsewhere. Its self funded system does require big hits to a certain degree, but those should be used to offset the losses in their alternative shows, and I don't see a single one in the entire yearly schedule. Channel 4 went mainstream around the time that Big Brother first hit our screens. Ironically, Big Brother was very much the ground breaking, divisive, dangerous programming it should have been doing, yet it ended up as the flagship for the new mainstream Channel 4 of the mid noughties. Channel 4 have recently been propping up the schedule with remakes of old classics from the station's history, such as TFI Friday, 15 to 1, The Crystal Maze. Not what Channel 4 should be doing, where is the innovation in rehashing old formats? They used to take pride in riskily axing their big hits the instant they reached there sell-by-date, to allow new success to flourish in their wake. Now, they're just digging them all back up.
Not Only Channel 4 is for england only, But Scotland, Wales, And even Northern Ireland
Mike Batt Duke Ellington, Scott-Heron and NYJO! That's eclectic
The phrase has its roots in the 1970s (at least), and was commonplace certainly in more left-wing circles by 1982 (and C4's defining characteristic at first was being some way to the left of any UK broadcaster before it).
28 Years ago today
Wait I forgot the question mark.
Goodnight from... 4
Lemmy, you’re grounded.
I like how they show their time schedule for the next day with periods inplace of the Americanized "colon" BETWEEN the sets of numbers...LOL
There was a closedown from channel 4 on their 5th birthday where there was a hand with its fingers in 5 different colours. Do you have it?
Wish there have the episodes of Everybody Here.
was this part at 0:00 midnight? that was usually the time when telly channels called it a day back then.
Anyone know anything about that "4" like seat behind the announcer? Sounds a silly question I know, but it's just so amusing. I'm not going to ask though, if it's still at C4 or whether it's been auctioned off to someone. I just think it's an interesting piece of furniture.
KillieKingdom It was part of the set for Preview 4, an early Channel 4 programme that looked at the week ahead on the channel. Paul Coia is actually in the Preview 4 studio in this clip.
Can Anybody Upload The Second Day of Channel 4.
I've gained a moderate respect for Hurd, after the fact: he was a kind of Macmillanite, One Nation Tory brake on the more hysterical Thatcherite ideas, notably referring in more recent years to the 1990 Broadcasting Act as "one of the least successful" of Thatcher's reforms (and certainly, by some way, the one that had least support among grassroots Tories in the shires). On balance, a more palatable man than the dangerous fraud Cameron, like him an Old Etonian and MP for Witney.
Don't you have the video where channel 4 closed down on their 5th birthday?
