DIY: Motorized Turntable for $12
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- I always wanted to get a display turntable, but I never did.
Spending $30 - $40 on a turntable was not a priority.
In this video I show you how to make a simple display turntable for around $12.
All you need is a Lazy Susan from Ikea and a microwave synchronous motor.
You will also need a power cable, wooden dowel, cable clip, hot glue, drawer knobs and a piece of clear tube.

After 2 weeks of break (camera was dead) I am back :)
I always wanted to buy a display turntable. I found a Lazy Susan in Ikea, so I decided to attach a motor to it.
You will see me using it in the future videos, Ouu yeah!
Is there someone dying in the background
i like that, i would Love to Put some Great ART On it esp with a spotlight aiming at it
Dude that’s class 👍🏻 cheaper than the Chinese rubbish on eBay. I watched this and was like clever ******* seriously cheers for the upload just ordered my motors 😉
what cord was used to power the motor?
AWESOME! Just what I was looking for to display my cake! Thanks SO much! Revolving displays are REALLY expensive!
Nice. I might try that out. Thanks man
very cool! cake decorators might like this to decorate with and for displaying cakes for weddings!
Thank You!
Brittany D'Arcangelo Taramasco not to mention diy traditional al pastor tacos
Lehi Garcia yes! Tacos!
Yes, great idea for cake decorating, that is exactly why I was looking ☺️
Thanks for this great idea 👍😁
And about $4,392 worth of additional equipment >_
hey, great video...
may i know how much weight you think it can support?
and what motor should i use if i want it to support something heavier?
This is actually pretty great. If I need a more advanced turntable in the future, I may opt for this!
His aortic rate is beginning to lean irregular. Nurse...! bring me those defibrillators!
Wha ta country.....!
Perfect i will be copying some of this.. Thanks for the upload oh & "subbed"
Thank You!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I just finished my own motorized lazy susan according to your instructions and it just ROCKS!!! Just what I was looking for to presenting items in-front of camera. :) When I'm done making the video I was planing to use it in I'll put a link to this video of yours; you deserve it man and much more views! :) Thanks again.
I am glad you found it useful.
Cheers!
goldeng hello bro the power chord...where to buy it?
if it would be just a tiny fraction of a second slower turn speed i would have to rip open my old broken microwave and looking for a motor but, its just a slight bit too quick for bonsai tree showing =) cool tho. by all means. ,, is it possible to put a dimmer switch on a motor like this u think ? to regulate speed like it regulates light normaly ? it would not mess the motor cycles up badly ? :)
The speed of a synchronous motor depend on the frequency of the applied AC, not the voltage. So a dimmer will not make a difference in the RPM.
Nice DIY project. Looks very simple and cheap to build.
Inside My Shop
Thanks You!
Great video 👍🏻 i want to make this but never done any electrical diy, what size are the red electrical cable connectors? Is it necessary to use black glue or can you use any hot glue gun to secure the wires with cable clip? Please help me 🙏🏼
Nice job, I always wanted to make a couple of small ones for my diecast models
Thank you so, so, so much!!! :) I plan to build/use this for many projects.
can you estimate the time it can turn with no break?
thank you. i will modify my own ikea lazy susan
Awesome. Just what I needed for my turntable. Wish you were here so I can order from you. Lol
Can you control the speed of turning? I notice that it turns a bit fast for my purpose. Thanks.
mae i
Thanks a lot Floyd. I'll try that one for sure.
Hi awesome video. A couple of questions. Does it rotate only one way or can you make it rotate directions? What kind of power cable did you get? Thank you.
+mike guerrero
It rotates both ways. Every time I turn it off and then back on, it changes the direction. I used the cable from the lamp with the switch. No earth, just live and neutral.
Cheers!
What did you use to connect the Synchronous motor to a power source? You mentioned cables, but what type? Would that run by battery or need to be plugged in? Would you have a link to purchase what you used? Thank you!
Which connector is live/earth? I fried one of these and I think it's because I connected wrong way. Want to sort out before buying another.
excellent. You could build something like this for your model paint booth for air brushing.
First thing to do is find the centre of the large disc and drill it. The Ikea turntable that I bought was really eccentric.
It's sad that D.I.Y PRo stole your entire build, I mean every part, and gives you no credit
How does the tube hold on to the dowel ? You seem to be lifting the upper part of the table using the tube. Should I apply glue to the tube before attaching it to the table ? I am surprised that you can lift the whole upper table using just the tube.
Very nice. Is it possible to make it programmable? For example, rotate one turn every 15 minutes.
Made one but the rotation isn’t smooth, it’s kind of jerky?? Maybe the the motor?
is there any way you can think of to make it turn 180 degrees, then back?
its very cool idea
If I need it to turn a person, what motor and bearing should I buy
I recently watch your video on your $12 motorized turntable coz I needed one for this carousel cake I'm making for a friend's daughter...I just wanted to know why was your synchronous motor 220v -240v? I purchased this motor on ebay just like what you suggested on your video, but then I realized that it is for 220v and not 110v...so will I be needing something like a converter for it to work?
+Jo Delafuente
Hi!
My motor was 220v - 240v (as I live in EU), but you can get a 110v motor. It's probably cheaper to get another motor than a voltage converter.
Search in eBay for: "synchronous motor 110 v" or "microwave motor 110 v"
Cheers
This is great! I think I will try to work this into a small project I want to get done! Do you know if they sell that Synchronous Motor with a battery input? Hmm.... Or maybe a silent kitchen timer...
would you weigh up to 5 kg support 12V High Torque Motor gear?
Thank you. What rpm did you use?
Very talented. But i dare not try. I nd something like tat to rotate for my carousel balloon decor..but dont know where to buy a ready one using 230v. Can u adv me?
eBay, Amazon.
How much weight does it support?
~+~+~+~+~I freakin' love your accent. That is fantastic!~+~+~+~+~
Hey there, I made this by following your video. It was very helpful.
Keep up the good work!
Uuuuuuh yeah!
can anyone recommend me a motor like this and how I connect it
nice, i can't seem to remove the bottom of the ikea foot. The nut keeps spinning
Thanks that worked. Once i got it off, I noticed that the screw was not catching the sides of the bottom base.
I like it but the song is creepy af
u should get some shiny black or any color material and wrap around the turn table for photo shoot type stuff
Pyro Sandwich
I am not planning to use it for photo shoot, but thanks for the tip. I guess that would look much better.
I want one to make my plants dizzy.
Cool! I feel like listening to Gogol Bordello after hearing your voice 😁
Sweet!
Any recommendations on what cable to buy to power in the U.S.? I got a synchronous motor 30V
+Archie Garcia You would probably need to buy a 30V power pack that converts your mains power down to 30V.
I only wish the items you used were listed as I'm not familiar with all the parts, thanks!
Ld 14 you can reuse an old microwave turntable motor... they trow microwave ovens all the time... I gutted mine after it broke down, and got plenty of stuff from it, transformer, magnetron, light bulb, motor, switches etc.... some are 120v, other 21v
The BEST DIY TURNTABLE YET.THIS IS THE ONE TO BUILD.
How much weight can it support
~16 pounds ~7.3kg
Great Project!!!!! I love yours vídeos =D
Ouu yeah!
DaniloDene
I am glad you do.
Cheers
Thanks for sharing. I've just purchased the same Lazy Susan from Ikea yesterday and willing to make it motorized too according to your guide.
I just wondered, would this motor spin at all if hooked to a 12V source instead of 220V? I find it much safer to work with DC power over AC as I'm not a qualified electrician but just hobbyist. And besides, I found a speed controller on eBay that I'm willing to hook to it, which has forward and reverse modes along with the speed knob. But it only supports DC from 6V to 28V (3A). Thanks in advanced.
+goldeng You would need to find a 12v motor. The one shown in the video is mains powered.
Thanks @Kutulue. :) I gained some courage and caution and already built this project about 3 weeks ago using the same 220-240V motor shown in the video. I even thanked @Shake the Future in one of the comments below. I found that the motor's standard speed is quite alright and so no speed controller is needed. In addition, I took extra safety and built a wooden housing to cover the motor, so it's much isolated now from any accidental human contact with the motor or the wires. :)
+goldeng Awesome. Excellent idea to cover over the wiring and motor. Just make sure there is a breathing hole to keep the motor cool. Not sure how hot they run.
Good point. I'll consider modifying the cover with drilled holes. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
Is it possible to use that stepper with arduino?
+Alessandro Mura
Sorry, I have no idea. I have "0" experience/knowledge about the arduino.
Cheers!
That is great Denny! Cheers
Andrea Arzensek
Thank You!
where do u buy the black glue for the hotgluegun?
I bought it in my local shop. You can also find it in eBay, amazon etc.
i think You did a great job... And, You did the video recording very well too!
Thank You!
nice, but how we can make much slower or add a variable speed function?
+finaleditor Install a Potentiometer inline with the power cables. This is what a dimmer switch in a light fixture uses to lower the brightness. If the motor gets less current it will turn slower.
Use the time function in your video editing program, lol
Oh yeah! Make me one
I used 30 volt motor anyone have any ideas on what could power it
electricity
Devin Walton , variable DC power supply off amazon, $20? would give variable speed
It's nice
Super, I love it!
Gad bless you man
Mcgrober
nice
AMAZEBALLS!!!!
danke Schoen
where did you buy that motor from?
Randy Palos Amazon
I don't understand why you glued the back to the bearings...why?
+Alessandro Mura
To give it some extra grip. Without the glue, the only thing keeping the both wooden circles together would have been the motor (shaft).
+Shake the Future ok, tomorrow i'll try! Yesterday i bought snudda and today i was coding with arduino to program that stepper motor :)
+Alessandro Mura Which kind of tube did you use?
Alessandro Mura
It's one of those tubes you can buy in pet shops (for aquariums)
is it rigid? diameter?
Tfs
I want to live with you ;-)
+Fogcitylad
lol :)
how much weight can go on it
+Kate Lee
Well, I can't tell exact weight, but I think that water melon weighted at least 6kg.
Ok tq
Can it turn me ?
Into what?
That $12 isn't gonna cut it here in California. The lazy susan from Ikea alone is $10, lol. Gas to go get it, time, the motor from Amazon ...first 5 listings average $10, some more time...miscellaneous parts.....if you have most of the stuff laying around in your garage and are reasonably handy, go for it....if you need to get most of it, judge for yourself. I do applaud the creativity, but the rest doesn't add up.
Just rip an old microwave apart. Use the motor and power cable. Make the lazy Susan out of scrap wood. Cost nothing.
I scrapped a bunch of microwaves I found on trash day and now have 5 of those motors, i'm just looking for random things to do with them since they're low rpm, I reckon I can probably improvise with a lot of this to make it essentially free, and it's just for fun.
I love it!, thanks. I am seeing that there are diferent rpm for the motors, your is 4rpm right? I wonder how could I make something to change the speed if needed. If you know, could you make a video about it?
Thanks!
Yes, the motor is 4rpm.
Changing the speed is not that easy.
Ok, maybe I said it wrong. Everything is easy of yo know how to do it :)
You can get a motor speed controller, but it's not going to work with all motors.
goo.gl/eUxOb0
It's not something I know a lot about.
Try googling about controlling the speed of the motor. There is a lot of info.
Maybe in the future I will learn more about the subject and make a video, but at the moment I have way to many projects on the list that needs to be done first.
Cheers!
Nicely done. Did you "consider" using an old record player ? Many are found at "yard sales" & "flea markets" for under $5.00, because young people don't know about them. ?
Perfect!
+Gábor Kardos
