BLACKWORK Embroidery Project | Step by Step from Beginning to End with a 16th Century Pattern

- Watch as I embroider my latest Tudor blackwork embroidery project. This project was based on two Elizabethan patterns found on Jane Bostocke's English sampler from 1598 (located at the V&A Museum).
For this 16th century inspired project, I am using twisted black silk thread on white linen fabric, on a slate frame. I counted every third hole per stitch.

Thanks for watching! ☺️ What do you like most about blackwork embroidery?
Thank you so much for showing how to draw a pattern in Excel. I think I'm pretty good in Excel but I did not know that.
Glad it was helpful!
I really enjoyed this video! I am really working on being able to look at a pattern and know when to diverge to a separate loop and when I should be turning back. This reversible embroidery is such a puzzle! You have such obvious skill. Thank you for sharing :)
You're welcome! Glad that you enjoyed this video and that it was helpful!
In future videos, please have the music volume a bit lower. I want to easily hear you. I don't mind portions without sound,
Thank you for the feedback. Over the years, I've been learning (sometimes the hard way) on how to use the video editing software that I have, including how to change the volume as needed.
It would be great if you mentioned what kind of thread and the count of the linen you used for this. Thanks!
In the video description, I have posted a link for the twisted silk thread that I am using. For more information on this type of thread, please go to 12:28 of the blackwork video at: ua-cam.com/video/ZGIU7WvBx1I/v-deo.html
As for the linen, over the years I have embroidered various types of linen (heavy, medium, and light). Since this embroidery was used for a caul (16th century women's headwear), I used a lightweight linen. For this particular project, I recommend using linen like this: fabrics-store.com/fabrics/linen-fabric-IL020-bleached-light
Lovely design, and thank you for showing how to design on Excel, that is really helpful for me! There is a Russian/Slavic embroidery that uses the same double running stitch technique called Rospis (Роспись). May I ask what type of linen you used and where you got it. Relatively even weave linens are hard to find, and best for the embroidery. The only one I've found so far has been Burnley and Trowbridge medium weight.
Thank you! I think I bought the linen off of fabrics-store.com. They carry light, medium, and heavy linens. I usually use light or medium linen, depending on the item that I am embroidering (for example, a shirt vs. a caul).
@@LynneFairchild Thank you!
You're welcome.
Thank you for the video. Can you tell me please, did you start with a knot?
No, I did not. I wove the tail end of my thread into the backside. For a visual explanation, please watch at 1:28 here: ua-cam.com/video/GwF6peJ9pU8/v-deo.html
In future videos could you please remove the audio and make your stitch shots much closer so we can actually see the mechanics of it. I really do appreciate these videos it’s just hard to see what you’re doing from that angle and that far away
My apologies that you didn't like the choice of music for this video. For a video with shots closer to watch the mechanics, please try watching this video: ua-cam.com/video/9cOTVnbhU44/v-deo.html
For the pattern in the above link, I counted every 3rd hole on the linen fabric. Hope this helps!
