- Part II of Jamie and Larry McCullough's travels on The Great Loop from Lake Erie to where we Cross Our Wake in Marathon Florida. A mixture of videos and photos show the beauty of the trip along with the challenges that make the trip so special. Part I can be viewed at: • The Great Loop aboard ... If you are looking for more details of the Loop, with descriptions and pictures, check out our Blog at Independence59.com
IMO, doing the loop is about two things. Spending time on the water exploring waterways and sights, and spending time in ports exploring bars and restaurants. So many times people talk about the former and ignore the latter. Nice video. Much appreciated.
Thank you Lord Kiltridge. That was what we loved doing, exploring the towns, exploring America.
Thanks for sharing your trip! Loved watching your video. Beautiful scenery and great looking boat. Love those Nordhavns!!!
I am glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind comments.
Cool video thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it.
This looked like such a bad ass trip. Well documented!
Thank you Graham, yes it was a great trip. I do wish I had done more video of it though.
Well done. That was really enjoyable to watch.
Thank you very much!
A Georgian Bay 'wave' to you from Birchall Island @ 3:21-ish. Summers in those waters gave me a love of boating, so I expect to be chasing your wake 'round the Loop in a couple of years, and using that segment of the route as a summer 'home port'. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it!
I am glad you liked it Rick. You might want to check out our Blog that my wife Jamie has put together. It has a much more detailed description of the stops on the Loop, Independence59.com
Georgian Bay was one of my top favorite places on the Loop, also very challenging.
Congrats for the thoughtful preparation and deserved joyful experience. Great inspiration for the rest of us.
Thank you Mark for the kind words.
Great video….thanks for the ride!
Glad you enjoyed it
spectacular boat to do the loop on.
Thanks, love my boat!
After 13,000 miles and 6 years of ownership we are now putting Independence up for sale. The boat has been perfect for us and we have had many great adventures but it is now time to do some other types of adventures. If interested reply below or email me at Independence59@yahoo.com
Awesome video! I really enjoyed watching. Not sure how long this must have taken to edit, but a tip of the hat to you! You have earned another subscriber.
Thank you for taking us along.
Thank you David for the very kind words. Please check out the other Loop Video and the one I posted about a month ago, "Cruising During Covid". Jamie does a blog, Independence59.com
Bucket list: A boat capable of Looping in comfort. That Norhavn 59 looks like ti fits the bill perfectly! Something I haven't seen on their site, what's the air-draft on Independence with the arch up and with it folded? Heck, I didn't even notice anything on the nordhavn website that indicates the arch _can_ be folded, and it looks like it isn't too big a job.
Hi John. If you buy a new 59 they can do the hinge at the factory, much better and easier. Ours was done at a yard in Florida as part of our purchase agreement. With the arch up the air draft is 24.75 feet, with the arch down it was 18.5. 19'7" is the clearance you need to get under the fixed RR bridge leaving Chicago. To lower it the first few times we used three men but then I tried using the davit and it was very simple and safe. We would rest the arch on 2 folding saw horses which were tied in place. Total time to lower and secure once we started using the davit was well under an hour.
@@Mac94920 Thanks for the information! So you would still need to take the more eastern route and avoid the western Erie Canal (15' if I remember correctly for at least one of those bridges). So MANY boats to look at if the lottery gods ever decide to smile! LOL
@@michiganengineer8621 You are correct John. We had to make a starboard turn and go up the Oswego Canal because of those 15' bridges. Worked out well for us because we went to the St. Lawrence River and cruised the Thousand Islands and we also enjoyed Toronto.
How is it possible to do the great loop in this boat? I thought the lowest bridge clearance is 19‘ ?! Also, what about draft? I am a big fan of Nordhavn boats - I am looking for a N43 or N47.
Hi Marc, we did the Loop but there were areas that we could not go. For example we could not do the entire Erie Canal, we had to use the Oswego Canal to Lake Ontatio. We had a hinge placed in the radar arch that got us down to 18 feet clearance. The following is a link to a video I did of us going under the bridge leaving Chicago that has the 19 feet clearance you are referring to: ua-cam.com/video/wLid9B-j8I0/v-deo.html Fully loaded the draft has about a 5.5 draft which was pretty tight at times.
I wonder if that electrified fish fence will weird out my electric boat? Must ponder .
I am no expert but I do not think it would be a problem. It did not effect our electronics.
any reason you guys by passed trent severn in canada? time?
Time was one consideration but we also wanted to get to all 5 Great Lakes. Another consideration was the draft. The Trent Severen is pretty shallow and I did not want to trash my props.
I know you guys! 🌙🐕e
Alright Moon doggie! Good luck with the house.
the loop in a nordhavn 59 seems like overkill, thats an ocean crosser
The Nordhavn 59 is not what is generally considered an "ocean crosser". The 59 is a semi-displacement boat that holds 1165 gallons of fuel and at a speed of 9 knots burns just over 1 gallon per mile. I plan on having the 59 for many years and to cruise in many different areas (made it to Roatan Honduras before COVID forced us to turn around and not go through the Panama Canal), so no, the 59 is not an overkill.
How long in total?
The route for the Great Loop that we took, including our extra excursions, was about 5,500 Nautical Miles. Jamie has a great blog on it, Indpendence59.com Thanks for watching.
A lot of pictures without a story line...boring. Very cold and impersonal!
Your refund is in the mail!
Why do you tubers insist on using the most awful music in their videos as soon as I hear it its lost me.
Gary it's quite simple why we use the music we do, Copyrights! If I try to publish a video that has any copyrighted music the video will not publish, or in other words be posted on UA-cam for the public to see. I have spent hours going through the UA-cam allowable music library finding music I can live with. I wish I could choose any music and pay a royalty but I do not know of a way to do that. In the mean time, mute the music and turn on your own music.
@@Mac94920 fair enough but next time get the wife to sing the ole theme from titanic , its gotta be better , you could be in background with your guitar shouting encouragement "" go on girl youd swear it was Whitney "
@@garryellison6055 if you thought the music was bad now if you heard me trying to play an instrument you would really hate it!
@@Mac94920 God loves a trier. You could try the spoons
Thanks for sharing…please narrate your next one…ok to have many moments of silence. Again appreciate the video….my speaker mute button worked just fine….
