Shane here :) , really love watching you fix my work. Keep it up :)
So Shane is not only a screw-up but he is also a comedian. Thanks for the laugh.
I have been doing renovation for 35 years. I can tell you that the biggest mistake you can make when rebuilding a house is believing that the person that built the house you're working on was any good at their job. People somehow believe that houses are level, square and plumb. Not even close. Understand this. Just because someone does something for a living doesn't mean they are any good at it. Also contractors do NOT believe it's their job to fix the mistakes of other contractors. An out of level slab carries straight up to the roof because no one cares. They just want their money. You're doing the right thing fixing those mistakes but you see it makes the job harder. A framer doesn't figure in the extra labor to make it level . Good thing you have free labor.
I thought my house was pretty well done (1951) until about a year after I bought it when I found some decking in the attic had not only been laid on top of a run of romex over a rafter in a couple places, but they managed to somehow sink a nail THROUGH the romex without causing a short or piercing the inner insulation. Later on I found part of the 1960's bathroom redux that added marble walls and an enameled steel tub set that tub on a bed of grout chaff... with a newer run of romex going right under the metal tub, on top of all the sharp masonry chunks.
I've heard the term "hot tub" before, but never quite like that possibility...
Also sometime in the 70's or early 80's someone chopped a hole in the garage floor to add a sump pump, and channeling along the basement walls to catch water intrusion.
Thing is, this house is ON A HILL, and not 25 feet away the ground falls off at a foot every 6-10 feet. It needed a frickin' pipe, not a convoluted sump pump rig....
Absolutely, it takes someone who is very detailed oriented and to slow down during the building of a house to make sure it's level and plumb.
My house is all but perfectly level, plumb, and square everywhere. Because it is the house that the builder/developer who built my neighborhood built for *himself*. The boss's house got EXTRA attention.
We level all walls or it would never pass inspection. From the get go its leveled from the foyndation and cimented in place then lag bolted every 2 feet (rods stick out of the foundation). We level litteraly every wall and don't remove our milion braces until the roof is sheeted. This is standard for inspections in Quebec and Ontario Canada.
Please don’t worry about being “boring,” I would watch you two do pretty much anything! Here for the wholesome vibes.
This series is about renoing a house week by week - nothing about it is boring! It's just the reality of it and I love every second of it.
Oh boy! If I may offer 1 suggestion...put drain in that corner of the garage now. That way no matter what, if water finds its way in (it will because youve now told the gremlins where it is) it will come in handy to have a floor drain. Our garage is the same & thank goodness, the little fella who we bought it from, did that. House is looking good! Remember youre tips when coming upon things like that arent boring, you never know who it will help!
Well, duh! Why didn't I think of that! My laundry room floor slopes toward my kitchen. I haven't figured out a good way to fix it without pulling the entire floor and have been worried over a washer flood. You just solved my stress issue. LOL It's over a crawl space even. LOL Floor drain going in post haste!!! I think I'll put one in the kitchen too. Genius! LOL. THANK YOU!!! HUGS
@@Camiken65 that garage drain of ours has saved us plenty of equipment, storage. So glad I helped! Big hug right back!
I was thinking the same thing. If one could be put in that low corner then all water will just drain out.
For real, my garage floor just slopes out the garage door. You'd need a drain for that shoddy concrete pour. Easier said than done on a slab though, some busting is in order.
Been here since the original house walk through and I've learned more watching these videos than I have in years watching official home reno tv shows. I can't wait to see it when it's done,
me, too! I literally told myself that I could EASILY remove a door, frame a wall and sheetrock it NO PROBLEM. Never have I ever felt that way and I am 56!
This the most entertaining renovation I've ever watched
The first house reno I ever watched was Matt Carikker's house ("I Bought an Abandoned Mansion") on his Off The Ranch YT channel.
Of course, the first I knew of it, the build was already over so I watched the edited version of the entire build, then went back and watched individual episodes. So as soon as I saw his "I Bought an Abandoned Resort" thumbnail, I've been addicted ever since.
Jenna's house is the only one I've seen that had to be almost completely deconstructed first, so I'm addicted to this one, too.
Thank you Jenna for your videos. I am have been studying for an exam for almost as long as you have been renovating this place (German med school finals) and tomorrow is the day I am done. :) Your video gave me so much comfort and I looked forward to it every week (Thursday for lunch). I am so grateful and wish you all the best and a life full of joy and blessing.
Congrats on soon finishing med school exams! That’s serious dedication
Best wishes on your med exam. Pray before and during exam, then thank God afterwords.❤️
omg I've been watching while studying for my law exams (also german) 🫶🏻😩
Since your guys' garage foundation isn't leveled, you can install a 'channel drain' in front of your garage door. You'll have to cut a recess into the concrete, install some sort of half cylinder that fits the recess dimensions, and put a grate over it. They're easy to clean since the grates are removable, NOT inherently ugly if you get some nice hardware, and since the house is on the right and (i assume) nothing is on the left, you can guide the water left to drop off behind the garage, or even connect it with the roof gutters to combine the water and guide it to drop off behind/under the pool area. I swear it'll save you guys since the property is on a pretty gnarly grade.
I left a separate comment about the grade of the garage slab causing potential water issues, and I approve this suggestion. Something's going to have to be done to get any water that gets into that back corner away from the walls and out of the garage! It's either that, or tear out the slab and repour...but I'm guessing we're past that. :D
@@medavis I was checking the comments to see if anyone had posted about drainage for the back of the garage.
My first thought when he was push-brooming the water out was to cut a drain hole (round or square) and pipe the runoff away from the garage.
I had drains added to the carport of my mid-century modern home about 6 years ago and it made such a difference.
My friend, who is a master craftsman, did the work. I was fascinated watching him carve out a slight slope around the drain edge (which he sunk a little below grade of the rest of the concrete carport floor) to channel the water toward the drain. He did an amazing job.
@@medavis Absolutely, and I'm unsure how the ground meets the foundation/the back and left wall of the garage, but if there's enough rainfall or collection and it meets the lip of the foundation it could very easily seep under the walls if there isn't proper waterproofing. And going below foundation level, depending on the ground level, will absolutely result in rot and mold. I would personally extend the drain down the left wall of the garage for longevity and added security since the walls are directly touching the foundation. I don't doubt however that Jenna and Nick will properly waterproof!
I can already picture you two in the finished house, sitting drinking coffee, admiring your view and looking around giggling and saying we did this!
Jenna and Nicky are doing the MOST as a couple! Nothing is too much, too big, too dirty or too boring for them. Date nights, fun facts, working out and and building a whole mansion together is what will guarantee a long and beautiful life together till they're old and grey. Laughing and having fun all the way.
Jenna, you may think the videos are boring, but honestly your videos are the one I look forward to most!
I have to agree wholeheartedly, I look forward to Jenna and Nicky every week, such a breath of fresh air and wholesomeness ❤
I would like to say how wonderful you two are together. Unfortunately, I live in Germany, otherwise I would offer you to come over with my 2 brothers, my husband and a car full of tools and help you. I wish you continued success from the bottom of my heart and that your roof can finally be put up. Kind regards, Karin
We have good days and bad days with everything. You keep it real and your audience appreciates you for that. I think you're both doing an outstanding job and I always look forward to your videos.
BTW...you are far from boring! Your humor, wit, banter, and sarcasm is so fun! I look forward to each and every one of your adventures! Hugs
It's amazing to look back and see how much you already accomplished I can't believe it's almost roof time! Don't worry about your videos being "boring" or "repetitive" you're doing a great job of editing and telling us what you're doing. Most of the audience is here to follow along on the reno anyways even if that means spending a week fixing shane's mistakes 😉
Here's the true reality, Jenna - you and Nick are AWESOME!! And you're a freakin' joy to watch. Love and hugs from me in New Mexico USA.
I love that y’all got a little snarky with each other. After the week you had it’s understandable. Finding out you aren’t level after doing all that work is frustrating. And the cold weather coming. And the restrictions for your roof. And the amount of things you need to get done before snow starts falling. Yall are still the most precious couple on UA-cam. I think I just really love watching the ordinary process of life and building a home together. You always pick the best music to vibe to. I usually say “what? The video is over?!?” And I just want more. Looking forward to next Wednesday. ❤God bless!
Don't feel discourage, what you're doing right now will make a difference in maintaining your home for years to come. You both are so inspiration, keep going!
Your steady progress is inspiring. The house has come so far in a short time. Keep going, keep laughing, and blame Shane!
Love to see plywood rather than ugly, offgassing particleboard. Edmonton had a tornado in 1987 & I would NOT lay any money on safety from extreme weather events. Love you two!💕💕
Hate to inform you, but plywood can also off-gas formaldehyde because it's bonded with phenol formaldehyde adhesive.
Plywood/OSB, and Particleboard/MDF are only different in the source material, not the glue. Plywood is wood chips glued together, particle board is sawdust glued together. Particle board is usually used for cabinets and shelving because its' lighter than solid wood. Both use urea-formaldehyde glue unless it's "E0".
Either way, "engineered" wood can be stronger when used properly, and absolute rubbish if used wrong (eg bathroom exterior walls) which is why it should never be bare exterior walls, because it crumbles from long term UV exposure.
I'm from the US and every time I hear Nicky say "Build A Wall", I crack up. I love watching you guys and was really entertained by the little spat you had. 😆
Haha! I was thinking the same thing. Imagine a big rusty border wall across British Columbia installed by Shane.😆
@@dianne.murielrobidoux9008building a wall is political misinformation? Back to Mexico with you.
😂 Get ready for all the people that know better than you to make their troll comments. There should be a cry bully wall.
Glad to see you take time for Madden and date nights, a big project like this can easily take over everything and wear you down. But the roof seems like the most major thing still left. Everything after that is downhill in comparison. You're soon going to be working inside and doing insulation, plumbing, electrical, floors etc and taking a snack break while looking at the view. Good times ahead.
Never a boring video from Jenna and Nicky!! Wensday are my favorite day of the week because of your videos!!! Can’t wait for next week crossing my fingers for the roof! 🤍🤍🤍
Not boring. You two are a ray of sunshine, and I for one really appreciate that you’re not dropping f-bombs all over the place, a sign that you actually have a decent vocabulary. It’s very entertaining watching the two of you problem solve and be industrious together. I look forward to seeing you every week.
I have three words for you: Self Leveling Concrete. Use that to level out your garage floor. :D
You want a bit of slope in your garage floor. Either towards a drain or towards the door. All that snow and ice that melts off the car needs somewhere to go. Not saying their current floor is correct (it's obviously not), but perfectly level is not correct either.
@matts.8342 I'm not saying a slope and drain isn't a bad idea, but there's not a lot of snow and ice in North Van. 😂
@@daeganreimer8610 there is a lot of rain, and there is some snow most years, the slab should slope 1/8" per foot minimum towards the garage door, and the framed walls should be on concrete curb walls that keep the framing 6" above grade. As for the roof you cant use metal roofing on a flat roof, they have basically three options, torch on, vinyl/rubber, or tar and gravel. Tar and gravel is also a roof they could easily do themselves.
After all that wobbly mess you now have a new rebuilt garage that is even all round in one week, well done, the floor is a simple fix with self leveling concrete
don't level the garage, it needs drainage. It looks like there's a slope from the street to the garage entrance, so in case of a downpour all that water might flood the garage.
I love watching this cute couple doing their renovation. Even when they find problem's caused by shoddy work by Shane, they keep laughing.
They are so entertaining I don’t fast forward through the in video ads. 😊
Never a dull video! I am absolutely obsessed with your home renovation journey. I even get emotional when I see Drywall Dave there working with you. What a gift for both of you to have this shared experience. Absolutely priceless!❤
Nicky and Jenna are the most adorable couple on UA-cam. Love watching all the videos.
Genuinely nuts that 109 thousand other people have also watched this video within 7 hours of it being posted.
I love how successful this series is for you and I'm ridiculously invested in your renovation work ❤
I kinda love you have a sponsor for every video... Like, yes girl, get that money! Build that house!
I'm having a garage built and thankfully none of the workers go by the name Shane. Making good progress you two.
your videos are never boring! been watching since your knitting era, and i will literally watch anything you put up
Your family must be so proud of you both , I know you have both had some help but the work u both put in is incredible ❤
Thought I would leave a comment about not beating yourself over "being boring", but I scrolled down and found a bunch of comments saying exactly that, so I'll just say that I wholeheartedly agree with all of this wonderful peeps in the comment section and that I'm here (and I'll continue to be here) for the wholesome vibes, because you're funny and cute together, and this has quickly become a comfort series for me. So I'm gonna see this through with you guys. Keep up the good work! 🥰😘
I have to say that is the finest little wall I've ever seen! Love watching the tow of you work together. thank you for deciding to share this adventure with us.
Don’t be discouraged, you are working hard toward your dream and it shows.
It is a treat watching you two work on your home projects. Thank you for sharing with all of us.
I have been following you from the crochet, to sewing, to knitting and crochet, and now into building a home, its fun and entertening, lots of info to learn about this new feald of building and permits etc. Thanks for sharing your struggle and dedication with all of us.
I love the way the two of you work together!
Excellent choice of music. Island Music. Happy times in fixing the garage!!
I live in Australia but currently in America and just love that you both have taken us along on your house Reno journey and also learnt so much. Look forward to your videos and you make rebuilding a house entertaining. Keep up the great job. 👏👏
You all are doing an amazing job! The frustration phase sucks! Bravo for creating engaging (and wonderfully addictive content) and figuring how to monetize it all while building what is going to be a beautiful house. You're killing it. Seriously :)
My husband and I have been renovating our home for 30 years. 😂😮 We can SO relate to having to fix really awful construction issues. The original builder of our house cut notches into the studs to run the electrical! We could have died from hanging a picture in the wrong spot by driving a nail into the stud and putting it through a live wire instead. Good times. 😅
Your hard work and dedication to this project is amazing!
You definitely are not boring! We love your building videos, and of course you and Nick make them so much fun to watch. Best.
HOLY SMOKE BATMAN!! Look at the walls!!! Jenna and Nicky have WALLS!!!
Nothing about this project is boring, though it could feel that way for you from time to time. It's immensely interesting, both to follow the project, learn a shit-ton from your actions, as well as being entertained by both of you guys :)
May God Bless You Jenna and Everytime you posts a new video it's put a huge smile on my face💖💖😀 you are my truly inspiration and I will always be your biggest supportive
the perfect Wednesday evening: watch a new renovation video while crocheting :)
honeestly these reno videos kinda get me through my work week. its something to look forward to every wednesday. I can just be at my desk and have your video on while I work!! :)))
You guys are doing great work for your family, your future and your home. As well as the preservation of a beautiful mid-century home- I love watching and learning right along with you both.
Man you guys rock. Such perseverance, dedication and happiness . I hope for a beautiful future for you two .
It's fascinating to see, how you build a home, because in germany most buildings are made from stone and concrete. That's perhaps why it' s kind of relaxing for us;-)Love it!
This couple and their adventures >>>
I love the use of freedom units in this video, just means there is another one of us that understands 32ndths, 16ths, 8ths and you get where it's going I hope
I enjoy your content, you are the one that makes it entertaining, the progress is a bonus. I learn so much more from seeing your journey, roadblocks and all, than I do from the milestones.
I may never be able to own a house (I live in a big city) so I truly enjoy the slow(it's not actually slow) process and look forward to every video
💙 there are weeks when things don’t go as one would like, people feeling grumpy, roof drama and rain. Thanks for keeping it real and still being entertaining. I thought is was really interesting to see how you problem solved the not-level garage walls 😊❤ see you next week
Not boring at all in fact it’s the highlight of the week , love watching you both
U guys r never boring
Don’t apologize, watching this go from the ground up is inspiring and will make the end when we get into the ‘fun’ all the more rewarding
This is what renovating and building is about. It’s not boring as this is life. Been there done that. It’s hard work, it looks as if you have done nothing but it’s important to do it right which is what you are so good for you. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩
The calmness is restful with the light humor.
It's hilarious when I started watching the videos so I thought you were making a renovation. You basically built a brand new house 😂
SHANE~! COME ON! In reality it looks very lovely. You all are making great progress.
This is the first time I've seen signs of the stress and strain of this project weighing on you guys. That you've been at it this long and now is the first time the stress is showing is *remarkable*! I am so impressed by both of you and hope you are getting some much needed downtime away from the build, to rest and recover. You are doing great!!!
Not boring!!! The reality is what we want to see. And you knocked it out of the park fixing what needed to be fixed. See you next week! ❤❤❤
Your video isn’t boring! I’m just happy to see you guys do your thing!
love the tarp idea. sounds nice when it rains
You guys are awesome. Not many people can do this, especially at the rate you're doing it. It's good that yall caught the unleveled walls before roofing came in, and no none of the videos have been boring. Great job!!
Love watching. For this Canadian living in the US it reminds me of my homeland that I’m often lonely for. You are doing a great job.
I've just been watching your videos since about two months so I didn't even know you were fellow Canadians. Love your videos🇨🇦
Is not boring at all. Im learning a lot with you two. So keep going and dont lose that hummor you have. Have a succesfull rebiuldt
The persistence that you demonstrate is admirable! I appreciate your tenacity, and sense of humour throughout this build. Your hard work is showing great results over and over again!
Saw this twice and it's still good!
We are on holiday in the Canaries at the minute but no way missing an episode of the latest update. ❤❤
This video is great! Because this is a real renovation. It takes time but it’s so worth it. The feeling of being in your finished house that you build and you KNOW how everything works and how it’s done is the best feeling ever🤩 good job!
Super interesting to see how off-level a garage can be built, and how much work is needed to correct it (and how frustrating that is!). My uncle built homes, and said he didn't like doing reno's because nothing could be counted on to be straight and level. Now I get what he was talking about.
Shane's mistakes takes the meaning of a "Comedy of Errors" to a whole new level! Garage looks great!
Love your videos. Not boring, you and Nick are very entertaining. 🏠🚿
Yay, you got a level garage and got that beam up😮. I was feeling that bad Shane's mess. So happy for the roof guys..... and another piece of the reno done!
These videos are never boring ever! They are cozy, sweet, educational & inspiring! I don't end my Wednesdays until I've caught up! You two are doing great, keep it up!
The music that started when Drywall Dave showed up should be your theme song imo. The vibe just suits the two of you.
Love you guys!! None of your videos are boring….you bring joy and smiles to all! I didn’t think we would get tornadoes in Canada either but the last few years in Ontario have proved me wrong. Had 3 in my area summer of 2022, days before we moved in our house and 2 after 😮 yipes
We love your videos. Keep them coming, not boring at all
I’m so glad Nick always has the answers for what’s gone wrong‼️
☀️Sunny side: Good thing you had the extra time to fix the garage before the roof came!
Your channel is never boring! You guys accomplished a lot this week! I always look forward to your videos.
This series is soo awesome and cozy to watch i really loved each and every episodes.
I still remembered the first episode you have made so much progress from crochet to renovating your own house.
😂😂😂 I was yawning while you were cutting a piece of wood, and I swear I could taste a smell of the sawdust 😂😂
You’re great storytellers! How much you get done in a week does not affect whether we watch or not!
I had never seen your channel till your house renovation uploads. I really like what you got going on. very entertaining and you both mesh super well. Wishing you both have better luck than you had with the garage guy.
Thanks for leveling with us today! 😂
Love you guys....it is so much to have the kind of patience that you both exhibit and your cheerful attitudes. I would have quit months ago!
I’m still so thankfull for the ‘beans up-date’ from Jenna Phlipps 😊 Great work you two 💪🏽👍🏽
i subscribed to you bc i love your editing style! you really make demoing and rebuilding a house really entertaining to watch! much love from norway!!❤
I didn't feel it was boring at all! Loved it!
I've been subscribed to you for ages, keep it up!
Stop apologizing and feeling like your videos are boring. You do a great job storytelling through your editing and we are learning so much from all that you're doing. Thank you for sharing your struggle and dedication with us!
Agreed you and Nicky are giving it your all million subs speaks for itself we love what we are watching
Seriously. The amount of suspense I have for this roof is tantamount to jumping the shark.
As in the suspense is what keeps me coming back every week.
Yess, she's just insecure I guess. But she needs to snap out of it
Yes and the fact that you’re keeping up with the weekly uploads is crazy impressive, thank you for you’re dedication I look forward to Wednesdays just for these videos
