    Would love to see v30 vs V-Type. I've been interested in hearing more about V-types as an alternative to v30. Also, After all these Nolly episodes, it would be awesome to hear a super-cut of that same riff through all the various speakers being tested! Keep up the awesome work guys!

    So... I emailed Eminence a few months ago. I was looking for the closest thing they had to the Randall Jaguars (Dimebag's cab - Eminence made the Jaguars for Randall). Here was their response:
    "I think the speaker you’re looking for is the DV-77. I think it accomplishes what the old Jaguar models set out to, but better. It has even better definition with gain, more low end that stays tight, and clearer highs. It’s not identical to the OEM models, but there’s nothing I would recommend more."
    We ended up buying 2 and throwing them in an EVH 2x12 cabinet. Not sure if it's my sons favorite, but he does absolutely love it.

    I think what many people misinterpret about the DV-77 is it's not a standalone speaker. Mick Thomson has it blended with something else in his cabs. It's always been meant to be blended with something else.

    The thing I find with V-30s (even moreso under a microphone) is that it takes work to fight against the way they really emphasize the white-noise sounding hash at the top of their frequency response.
    Darker sounding speakers aren't as inherently cutting / forward on their own, but you can feed them way more highs or presence control before they sound bad. Even more importantly, you can boost up the top in the mix and not be adding all sorts of unwanted noise to the tone of your high-gain guitars.

      'Hash' is how I've always heard it as well. For what it's worth, the different eras of Vintage 30s do exhibit different personalities in this regard. I'm curious what @ZillaCabs and @Nollythegreat think the most appropriate eras are, in order to avoid that characteristic.

    The DV-77 needed different EQ to really shine in the A, B comparisons. I believe A was the DV-77. Blends superbly with other including H Creamback.

  • @OsmiumStudios
    @OsmiumStudios 6 днів тому +2

    If you have compensated the highs with a bit of treble and presence on the amp, they would have been so much closed. I have DV 77 and it is a bit dark, but once you turn a bit of presence it rocks :)

    • @toneconsultant
      @toneconsultant 2 дні тому

      Wonderful point. Actually 100% of the speaker shootout is the same amp settings. "In real life", that doesn't happen . . . ever. Therefore, though these comparisons are still helpful, there's still so much more needed to actually purchase a $180 speaker. On a side note, VHT make a chrome speaker. That speaker will do what this combo does all in one speaker. That speaker is a hidden gem. If you want fame, you buy the famous v30 and/or dv77. If you want tone, you search. The VHT was what I found to surprise the giants.

    I'm running a closed-back oversized 2x12 with a well-used, early 2000s, V30 and an old Greenback (1976 code).
    Handles absolutely anything. From a vintage Tele into a cracking JTM to a 7string Schecter into a JVM at (almost) max gain. Even sounded great playing a 10 string Chapman Stick through it...
    Cutting out frequencies with a great EQ is easier than trying to add them when they simply weren't produced by the speaker 😜🤣

      If it's that good they should send us one. Generally when companies say they've made a speaker better than the V30, they haven't but I'd be up for hearing one.

      @@ZillaCabsI have a Weber Gray Wolf 100w speaker with specs as listed above. Don't know if it's a V30 killer, but it's powerful. Makes a Blackstar sound and feel like on the Mesa Boogie realm to my ears. It also has a lot of body (but my speaker is a custom-made designed Grey Wolf, so it could have changes compared to the ones in the market).

    I like the DV-77 a bit better. Specifically because as you turn up the amp in a live setting, the upper mid/highs aren’t going to cut your head off. Under a mic, I don’t mind adding some upper frequencies to compensate to fit in a mix.

  • @racerdeth
    @racerdeth 6 днів тому +1

    If I had to call it (I'm commenting now watching the comparison), I'd say A is the 77 and B is the V30. The V30 has a signature big head of hair on it where it's borderline fizzy but it's low enough to be edgy. Seems that they tamed that out of the 77. Sounds dark side by side but then you'd dial the amp *to* the speaker to compensate.

    I have 2 DV-77’s paired with 2 Hesu Demons in my 4x12, in my opinion I find the Demon a good matching with the DV-77 as it brighter and has the higher mids the DV-77 doesn’t have

    I a / b'd these myself. Dv77 and v30 in the same cab, the dv77 gets drowned out, but the v30 is also an ear piercing thing that can get painful to listen to in person if the guy is using say a 5150 iii and cranks the highs.. Im not sure how this was mic'd up but the dv77 was like the v30 without the horrid upper spike when I compared them. I wouldnt use a v30. I have h75 creambacks, which are another one I prefer over v30s.

    V30's are unusable with a strat and high gain. You can always add mids/treble to the eminance. The V30 is way too icepicky...virtually impossible to eq out the mid spike without killing the cut. Easier to add mid-range and treble than remove it
