  • In this video, this outstanding 7-piece band performs a cover of the Joni Mitchell song 'Hejira'. Led by Hattie Whitehead, the band comprises highly experienced jazz musicians who share a deep love and respect for Mitchell's music. In particular, the band performs the masterpiece works that Mitchell captured on her live 1980 album, ‘Shadows and Light’.
Joni Mitchell's original band for Shadows and Light comprised bassist Jaco Pastorius, guitarist Pat Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, percussionist Don Alias and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Hejira's rendition of Hejira pays tribute to the legendary musicians who contributed to the original recording while adding their own signature sound to the mix.
    Please see:
www.hejira.co.uk to learn more and book tickets for their upcoming shows.
    Hattie Whitehead: vocals and guitars
The band is fronted by the extraordinarily talented Hattie Whitehead, who not only sings masterfully with Joni’s pitch-accuracy, poise and dignity, but she also plays guitar much with the mannerisms of Mitchell (incorporating various open tunings - which lend an instant authenticity to the colour of the songs). Hattie grew up surrounded by music and musicians - her father is the brilliant saxophonist, Tim Whitehead - and has a career as a singer/songwriter outside of this band. In 2016, she won the ‘Emerging Talent’ competition at Glastonbury Festival. Her original songs have been listened to hundreds of thousands of times on various streaming platforms.
    Pete Oxley: guitar
Pete grew up in a family of classical musicians, fell for jazz in his late teens, went on to study jazz at the Leeds College of Music, then moved to Paris in his mid twenties. It was there that he began gigging intensively and developing his career as a guitarist, composer and bandleader. He has produced 16 albums of critically acclaimed original music (including 7 with the Swiss guitar virtuoso, Nicolas Meier) and is one of only a handful of British composers to have their works included in the ‘European Real Book’ (Sher Publications). The Oxley-Meier Guitar Project continues to record and tour extensively throughout the UK and Europe.
    Ollie Weston: saxophones
Since graduating from Leeds College of Music, Ollie has had a diverse career which has included education, session work and live performance. In the former of these, Ollie teaches at the Guildhall (London) and has major tutorial books published by Schott Music under the heading, ‘Exploring Jazz’. In the latter, Ollie has toured all over the world with such outfits as Amy Winehouse, Tim Minchin, Bonobo and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. He has also worked extensively in the West End, performing in Chicago, Dream Girls and in two critically acclaimed seasons at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
    Chris Eldred: piano and keyboards
Chris first came to prominence while playing in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), from 2008 to 2014. In the midst of that period, he was winner of the 2011 Yamaha Scholarship Award for Outstanding Jazz Musicians and graduated in the same year from Trinity College of Music with first class honours. He is now a regular performer at Ronnie Scott’s and is one of London’s most in-demand pianists.
    Dave Jones: electric basses
Dave is one of the most brilliant bass players - on both electric and acoustic basses that the UK has produced! His deep musicianship has led him to work with, amongst others, John Etheridge, Bill Bruford, the BBC Big Band, Jacqui Dankworth, Willard White and Scott Hamilton. He is bandleader, arranger and composer of the ‘Dave Jones Nonet’, comprising the creme de la creme of UK jazz musicians. Dave is continually active in jazz education leading many courses at Richmond Jazz School where he also previously led the faculty and he is also regularly invited to teach on a number of international jazz summer schools.
    Rick Finlay: drums
Rick’s career has seen him being perpetually occupied, dividing his time between London’s West End, education and performing as a jazz musician. In the former, Rick held the drum chair at Blood Brothers for twenty years and also played for The Little Shop of Horrors and Chess Time. As a freelancer, Rick has performed on many prestigious TV shows, including Parkinson, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and The Late Show. Rick has, for several years, been hosting the ‘Just East Jazz Club’ in North London, where he has accompanied most of the UK’s jazz glitterati!
    Phil Hopkins: percussion
Phil is not only a great percussionist, but also a virtuoso chromatic harmonica player! Phil's career has seen him perform in myriad styles all over the world, notably touring the States with the legendary Irish singer-songwriter, Phil Coulter. With this band they performed in major American halls, such as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Symphony Hall Boston. He has worked with such diverse artists as Rory Gallagher, The Dubliners, Michael Ball, Claire Martin, and Duncan Lamont

Hello everyone! I just wanted to thank you all for your lovely comments. It means a lot to read your responses to our videos and playing with this band is a delight. Joni's music is timeless and I absolutely love playing her music. Her songs are so clever lyrically, harmonically and melodically, and to go deeper - playing her music brings up raw emotion in me which I think is the most important experience in performing - whether it's a cover or an original song. Thank you again for your support and hope to see some of you at a show xxx

I agree, but remember this, Jaco never improvised, everything he played he'd already composed and notated. If you're a technician and can read, you can cover him, but that does mean you play, compose as well. With that said, GOOD JOB! BTW.. This is why a hate Needle Drop covers. They're never as good, so why bother? JMHO

Please do your diligence… Jaco was fanatical about pre-authoring his lines. The line he did for Joni were not improvised in the moment, yes of course there was a time he “improvised” but he did not improvise in the studio, and did not change the lines during a performance… this is also well documented with his work with the weather report. I suggest you read up on Jaco before you make dogmatic statements about him and his playing. I still think you guys did a great cover but as I stated before I’ve never played a needle drop cover of any music that I’ve performed. I’m not a copier I’m a musician and although people love hearing needle drop I advised him to go home and listen to it on Spotify. I wish you all the best

This song is one of a handful of songs that has the ability to completely transport me and a less-than-adequate performance would’ve been almost devastating. This performance, however, was far beyond adequate, it was inspiring. What a fabulous band, what a fabulous singer!

Pete, I am in the U.S. As best I can, I of course will share your project to all. We do have a kind of mantle to pass to others about music and culture. I am old enough to appreciate the care and living that went into that song. But doing a cover can also perpetuate the human truths inherent in the original. A snapshot of how life was and is, regardless of the times. People may be more hungry for that sonic and cultural richness in the U.K. than they are here. It is a service you are mirroring back to us. And, of course, the work all of you put into that performance is priceless.

I had the pleasure of seeing the band live at Peggy's Skylight - they were absolutely stunning. It takes special musicians to fill the shoes of Pastorious, Metheney et al but these guys are top drawer and make it all sound effortless. Hattie gets about as close to Joni both in timbre and phrasing as anyone is likely to get but still seems to put her own stamp on the rendition. I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and she is probably the best songwriter of the 20th century - I hesitate to say this is the next best thing as I suspect Joni wasn't always on form live - go see them!

If they enjoy it as much as I would of then I will be more than happy.
I've said befor that I love these interpretations of the songs no attempt to blindly copy but true and unique interpretations, works for me and hopefully , as the word gets around, it will start to work for many more.

Hearing someone reiterating some of Jaco's bass guitar work is such sweet sorrow. I grew up not far from where Pat Metheny did , and had his "Bright Size Life" album with Jaco on the bass which was amazing in itself; a local boy playing with Jaco I'd seen perform with immortal jazz legends Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul with Weather Report. And of course Joni had written some anthemic songs of the generation, so when "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" was released I was all over it.
    Beautiful stull.
Beautiful rendition. Amazing vocals paying tribute to Joni's expression. Take care of that voice, Hattie. It's a treasure.
