- Keep your kick switch feature on your Toyota Rav4! Toyota tells you that this isnt possible. They tell you to remove your kick sensor and throw it away. If they install the trailer hitch for you on your Rav4, the Toyota dealer will remove your sensor! Dont! This is how you can retain your sensor.

‘24 XSE Prime. I had Toyota install the trailer hitch. They told me the kick sensor was history. But they gave it to me. I modified exactly as shown in this video. My hitch has the flat four prong factory wiring mounted on the tab and the kick sensor works perfectly on the left or right of the receiver. Thanks for the YT.
One more thing: the kick sensor must be turned on with the "settings" in the Rav4. When the dealer removed my kick sensor, he turned it off, so when I reinstalled it, the settings had to to altered to make it operable.
Thank you for this video! I was able to keep my kick sensor when I installed the hitch on my XSE. Well worth the effort - and a thumb's up for your help.
Tank’s Jim and Gary, I just finish to intall the hitch and the kick sensor works great.
Some customer pulled this video up and told me to do this 😂👌
It is worth noting that the aluminum Bumper barrier was removed to install the oem tow hitch shown at 6:29
Wow, he did an outstanding job with that. It looks perfect. 👍🏻
I think so too!
Was that the Toyota one hitch? Or a third party brand?
Do you install the trailer hitch first before rerouting the sensor wiring? Thanks
If you can find a bull bar that fits the Rav4 Prime or post a link to the bull bar that would be appreciated.
James - useful videos as always! I installed room button, horn swap, fog lights,... based on your previous videos. Have you put any thought into how we can change the sound played in reverse?
I havent. The noise doesnt really bother me. We have a lot of idiots in Ithaca NY so I think the noise is great to have. Thanks for watching! Any ideas for future videos?
😁oh yea....... great job Gerry
I just rerouted mine to the driver side by flopping the cable the other way and gorilla taped it in place and now I can just kick my driver side tailpipe, no cutting involved. I bought some wire organizers I’ve been meaning to use to make it seem a little more stock. It’s a pretty easy mod.
Im glad you were able to make it work!
Did you move just one cable or both?
@@DavidFrostbite both and ideally keep a similar distance between them when remounting is what worked for me.
@@leblancexplores hi Chris, what kind f saw did you use to cut the hole in the bumper? Tank’s
Did you happen to take a photo? Or perhaps can you describe in more detail? I've tried the method in the video and several positions of the cables and while it works sometimes in some positions, I can't get it to work nearly as reliably as it did before the bumper install. Thanks?
You are the man! Thank you!
Happy to help! Don't forget to hit that thumbs up button for me! Thank you!
Dealer installed original hitch in my rav xse and now kick sensor is not working. How can I check is the sensor is still there? I looked under bumper and I don’t see that cord which the actual sensor. My guess dealer removed it completely :(
Do two wires have to be close to each other for contact? I did the same thing but doesn’t work as well?? I may have to check it again..

At the end of Gary’s video when he tests the kick sensor, the red lights on the bumper flashed sequentially (like the turn signals on the Avalon Touring). I love that. Is that stock on the XSE or aftermarket?
Those are aftermarket. You can find them on Aliexpress. They are cool but you need to remove the bumper to install them.
I added them when I had the bumper off...made it much easier. There are other YT's of how to install.
@@garybarbour2345 Which lights are they? Do you have a link?
@@DavidFrostbite There are two different styles of these rear lights: 1 has just brake and running light option and the other has the turn signal also (it will have 4 wires- yellow wire, which is what I chose). Here is the current link from who I purchased the lights from, but I noticed that there is a comment about a delay in shipping... www.ebay.com/itm/For-Toyota-RAV4-2019-2020-LED-Brake-Stop-Light-Bumper-Reflector-Driving-Lamp-Kit/184395935562?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
@@garybarbour2345 Thanks for the video Gary! I will relay this info and see if I can find a Toyota dealer willing to save the sensor when I get hitch installed.
I’m trying to get a hold of Gary. I think he lives near me and would appreciate his help with my hitch on my XSE. I’m wondering if he would be interested in working on my RAV4. Can you please connect us? Thx!!
has any one thought of using the highlander kick sensor? i called my toyota dealer and there is a new kick sensor kit for highlander with oem hitch, maybe that would work better than cutting, zip ties, etc
It’s beautiful 🗽
If you add a hitch without cutting, can't you just activate the sensor by kicking to the side of the hitch?
James do you have any pictures of this, Im having a hard time with the rotation of the bumper!
I dont sorry.
I live in Orchard Park, NY.. Go Bills! Ordered a 2022RVP-xsePP... Do you reside in OP?
Nope, Ithaca NY for now. Moving soon to TN. Im going to miss going to Bills games.
OK. My 2019 limited with kick switch has a standard underneath the bumper hitch added. I got the kick to operate once since I installed the hitch. Not sure if they changed the method of how the kick sensor works, so is my foot just not close enough to that interference sensor anymore due to the hitch ?
I think the metal trailer hitches effect the radar/sonar/whatever they use to detect a foot.
I am trying to retrofit the kick sensor on my Prime SE. Do you happen to know if the wire harness is already inplace, and it is not, which part number it is from Toyota? The parts department of my local dealership have no clue. Thanks
I dont sorry.
There is a pigtail, a female connector about 1/2" X 1/2" hanging down on the driver's side of the car under the bumper if it is wired.
How can I get my dealer to do this? I don't have tools or time currently to do this myself I don't think
My thought exactly, I am going to ask my local dealer about it and see what they would charge, probably show the technician the video on my phone or laptop if they are interested. Maybe you can get a quote for regular install, tell them what's involved and ask what the extra labor cost would be to loop the sensor around the opening and save the sensor. I am in CA where things tend to be expensive (but I did cash a $3500 rebate check in addition to fed tax credit, Yay!) It's about $300 for standard install at a custom hitch shop here, U -Haul may be closer to $200 but our visit to the Altadena location did not impress me. They did not call us back and notify us when part was supposed to come in for my wife's car. I would not trust them with anything like this mod based on complexity. haven't checked dealer, but if it goes $$$$$, I'll live without the sensor. Love my car, so fun to drive. Good Luck Noah!
@@dalab9716 My Toyota dealer had seen the video, but told my Toyota would never allow the modification to be done by them. I think if you were to take the Toyota hitch to a 3rd party mechanic, the hitch and the kick sensor could be installed -- and probably for less money.
Thank you so much for this video - it was incredibly helpful for the install. I made a supplement to this with a few things and an alternative sensor routing (ua-cam.com/video/dBG-4mi4R-o_/v-deo.html) that may be worth considering, but your video is the original and gold as I wouldn't have known how to do it otherwise (and my local dealer didn't even know how to do it after keeping my vehicle for half a day).
I'm the first 😊
Thanks for watching!
The XSE does not come with a standard kick sensor. You have to upgrade to XSE Weather with Audio and Premium package for an additional $5,760 to have the kick sensor to be included in the XSE. I ask the dealer where I bought my Rav4 Prime last week to install the OEM tow hitch but they won't do the cutting that you ask your dealer to do for the price of the tow hitch. They said that they have to change the rear bumper standard for a RAV4 Prime with a tow hitch but would cost 1K instead of $295 for just the tow hitch accessory. Thank you so much for your videos. Learned so much being a first time Hybrid and or EV car buyer.
Thanks Jim and Gary!
