Back in the late 80's I used to repair Walkmans at Radio Shack. The moto was "When in doubt, belt it out" because 99.5% of the time, the issue was a broken/warped drive belt.
Hello Elliot, I was a central London Sony Dealer and help launch the walkman. I met the chairman of Sony and they also paid for a trip to see the factory.
The grinding noise or rubbing noise while playing or rewinding is usually caused by the supply and take up reel hub gears. That model has two large thin gears behind each reel/hub that are each attached to metal center disks. Very similar to the Sony WM-DD models with the disk drive center gear hub. They can crack due to plastic shrinkage over the past 40 years. The metal disk that holds them doesn't shrink so the gears split. You can repair them with a lot of patience and effort with filler epoxy and some fine sculpting abilities to reform the very small missing gear teeth. Or find a donor gear section to put in the split. The case is thin aluminum which can be reformed with the proper tools.
Hi THD I have a Sony WM-DD11 that has no power as both the black negative leads from the battery box are off the board, any idea where they are meant to go please?
Do you think it would be possible to manufacture metal gears that would last better? Or do they interface with other plastic parts that can’t be replaced.
Fixing things look so fun, I dont know where to look to start doing this that wont break the bank at first since I never have done this before lol. Nice video love watching your videos!
i found a wm-20 at a thrift for a dollar, it was thrown in with all the cassettes (since it blends in so well due to size) still need to replace the belt and clean some battery corrosion, fingers crossed that it still works!
My mom had this one back in the old days and she gave it to me. It was not working and it has a molten belt too. Funny to see your video on this now because it came out a week after I got the one from my mom
Hi Elliot, I have two of them Sony’s still in the box the WM 10 and the one you have there the difference really is one’s red and ones blue. They are both the same size and both come in the same box. The blue one came from Japan red one comes from the United States
Hello, thank you for your video. can you tell me where i can find the seal that turns the wheel, or you put the link of the shop on the internet? please
You should be able to fix the dents pretty easily. They’re shallow, so a hammer and dolly will take care of them without messing up the paint too badly.
It's STILL the smallest in it's collapsed state that fully contains a tape when expanded. If you only compare the expanded state, there are MANY others that are smaller. Also, this doesn't include units that don't fully contain the tape while being played. It still holds the reputation as world's smallest but once you start applying different criteria, it's not technically true depending.
I just came back to this video cause I'm trying to fix my Wm-10 but I just realized mine looks exactly like yours and yet the sticker is still says its a wm10 and not a 20 version!
I've got a WM-32 with original headphones and the box, the motor is no longer spinning because the belt has turned to gooey mush, and eats cassettes too
Frustrated for you Elliot. The not quite fixed is somehow worse for the reassembler than a just plain refuses to work. Good video. Hope you have a brainwave for this cassette player.
@@ToxoRetro I am sure he has the software that he uses to edit his videos to extract the audio he then needs to play that into one of his recording capable Walkman via a 3.5mm Jack.

Love the clever engineering in these old cassette players.

I love these videos. You second channel rocks! Can you give us an update on the car restoration?
Nice video! Hoping to see more Walkmans!
Part 2: I buy a hammer
if you want a cool one to fix, the wm-7 was the first auto reverse walkman with logic controls and a remote control, have one and its pretty cool

you are very lucky with getting these working, a lot of the time they have an electrical issue that is a total pain in the ass to fix

@@RWL2012 Go watch my Movie, “Little Nicky”, starring me, Adam Sandler, Ozzy Osborne, and some other friends of mine! It’s available now on Netflix!
I have a black walkman model WM-AF42/BF42 that doesn't work. The radio works, but the motors might be broken as the cassette reels don't spin.

What is your Go to/ Daily walkman that you use?
What is the smallest walkman now
Also cool video
The smallest Sony Walkman is the WM-102 but as of right now the smallest portable cassette player is the Sanyo JJ-P4.
Happy Christmas Eve TRF!!!
Hi mate, can’t you tell me where you can get the Sony chronicle book?
I bought the WM-20 as a brand new when it was released back in the days. They has always been noisy. 🙂

I like the cassette speaker
sony is the genius on industrial design, shame they won't make those anymore
what a beautiful walkman
I have a Sony Walkman WM-40. Would the belt replacement be identical.
Any advice for people looking to get this model repaired?
I have one with exactly same problem, where can i find a new belt? Please...
bro where do you get that cassette speaker?
I want it
Do you have your collection catalogued?
Merry Christmas guys.

The sony super walkman. Super finicky, super brittle and super expensive. But boy, are they super beautiful!
Really Grinds your Gears, eh? #PUN!
Are you competing with Techmoan now for Walkman content :p
looks like a Square Belt, Reel 6.4 Inch fyi
