Top reviews again Michael keep on doing the business! Too many high brow reviewers of over priced crap. Nice to have someone there who is dealing in the stuff we can afford - good value!
Hi Michael, it is nice to hear your opinion about the 217 and compared to the very well known 317 and 101. Merry Christmas to you as well. I hope you will find many bargains next year.
Another nail-on-the-head review there, Michael! I listened to the 217 with high hopes and I came away disappointed. To my ears it sounded - for want of a better word - murky. Like you, I wasn't getting the sense of space between the instruments or top-end sparkle that I enjoy. Mind you, I felt the same about the NAD 7020 receiver... maybe I'm just a natural contrarian.
The AU-317 is direct coupled (meaning no caps between pre-amp and power-amp) 217 isn't Direct coupled. My 317 sounds great, but the pre-amp needs service so now I'm using the power amp only (You can with the AU-317 but not with the AU-317 II.) The pre-amp I got (ADcom gpt-500) doesn't sound as nice as the one in the 317 but I remedied that with a little tube buffer between in and the Sansui.
I checked online images and the AU-101 is capacitor coupled on the output, it's cost effective and primitive and e-caps are anything but linear but many love the sound. Marantz 1030/60 and IIRC the NAD 3020 are also single rail. My Naim Headline is single rail sounds plenty fine, one day I hope to come across one of the Marantz or the AU101 and give magic mojo a try.
Good review Michael. I had an AU217 MK11 which I bought new from Comet in 1981 and it cost £121. Second hand market now for these is silly, totally overpriced. I sold mine in 1989 for £60. I was also fortunate enough to do, at home, a side by side comparison with AU117. As expected, the 117 was poor compared to the 217. The most obvious difference was in the bass.. 117 lacked the power, definition and punch of the 217. I had Leak 2060 speakers at the time. Front end was a Rega Planar 3 with Rega R100 cartridge. Keep up the good work....and have a great Christmas.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thanks for another interesting review, as it happens my mate is going to gift a friend a system, he has a Marantz CD52 and a small set of Kef speakers and is looking for an affordable amp to complete the gift. I told him to check out your excellent channel for some ideas. Happy listening to all Jim🏴🙂
Always go for the 317 or the 117, the 217 is not bad in any way but the 317 delivers and the 117 is just a sweet amp and does things well for the money. Plus these series are good build and reliable. plus ... The state of the amps when compared is something to consider as well, if both where in new state the outcome could be different.... just saying..
hello ,i have sansui au 217 and au 317 , for me 217 is better , cleaner sound, balanced sound , 317 has a little muddy sound , 217 is the winner for me
