Antitoxin and anti-radiation canisters: Minor assists
Adrenaline canister: Literal resurrection
The Dead Ringer/ Totem of Undying
my theory is that the adrenaline canister is actually full of viagra, therefore it is... *RESURRECTION BY ERECTION*

The Oxygen Tank is another cool cut item that is actually functional in-game. It sees a lot of use in the mod Residual Point, which has a branching level pathway in the middle where one path leads through an area of the facility that is totally flooded. It's a very cool set of maps, even if the underwater gameplay is mildly frustrating at times.
Amazing that this function survived from being cut, would be neat to see it in more custom maps but used sparingly otherwise it becomes a cheesy way to survive the poison.
Couldn't agree more
It was cut very late in development hence why the items are still in the code and somehow work.
best use in my opinion would be for it to specifically be for poisons, like the scrapped ideas of the crossbow having neurotoxin treated bolts, and the female black ops using the crossbow and combining to two
The canisters and their effects do exist in the mod Absolute Zero, including the entire area/chapter that the MP map was based on. I'm not sure what preceded what, but something tells me that the MP map maker just took a portion of the existing map and forgot to take out the antitoxin canister (because it's in the same spot there, under the stairs).
As for gameplay effects, I think they're mostly redundant, in AZ they allow you to reduce the harmful effect of DoTs, though the adrenaline was quite overpowered in how it could easily let you sequence break (by surviving fatal falls and such). Then again, it rewards bad play, so it's kind of silly to have it, although it could've been fun in MP.
so is that why there are leftover ai nodes
25 years later and there's more to HL1 I didn't know. It would be cool if the canisters protected the player from the next bio-hazard or radiation. However, I think it would make the HUD too crowded or be too confusing to the player to have to think about canisters in the inventory.
thats what it was meant to do
That's crazy that Valve didn't fix this to work in the final version. Would've made the gameplay more fun if these adrenaline and antidotes were actually present. Def gonna use these in my mod
The usage of antidotes could have provided more features in the gameplay and I wouldn't mind seeing them getting added. Nice find.
Gordon doesn't need all these! He's a highly trained professional
Brimstone
That’s interesting. I’m kind of half and half with this being cut. On one hand it’s definitely really interesting, but on the other it would’ve been annoying if a bunch of enemies could poison you. One thing I wish we had was stuff like gas grenades that do lingering damage to a large area, maybe a biological gun that poisons enemies, or carrying over Valve’s original idea for the Assassins to have crossbows that were poisoned. Lingering damage is something that Half-Life should’ve used.
it's worth mentioning that there doesn't seem to be any info of Valve intending for the poison bolts and the Black Ops using the crossbow being linked, they seem to just be two different ideas that thematically fit together. also while there wasn't a gas grenade, there was a unused stun grenade known as the "flash grenade" which would temporarily blind enemies, that was created for the Half-Life alpha, Gearbox planned to reuse it or make something similar to it for the male Black Ops in Opposing Force that can be found on their belt as well as in the files.
a cool use for it in mods would be using it alongside earlier concepts of the crossbow having neurotoxin treated bolts, and the female black ops using the crossbow, maybe in a scripted sequence of the player getting poisoned and needing to retrieve the antidote.
That would’ve been interesting. Too bad the player never gets to use poison weapons. Having a fun that does lingering damage would spice up the sandbox.
@@shreksnow1918 true, what i think would've be a good way to keep it balanced would be to have the player only obtain the neurotoxin bolts after the second Black Ops fight (the first fight would be pointless as they player would instantly lose them), so that the player could have them for Xen but not too early, and additionally they would only be obtained from the dead Black Ops (since they do wear a quiver of crossbow bolts and poisoning from a distance fits with their stealthy femme fatal likely CIA assassin role) from that fight, so that there is a limited amount that cannot be replenished to balance out the poisoning effect, and if a player holds off on using them until fights with the Gonarch or Nihialnth they are rewarded with an advantage.
I don’t think the crossbow would’ve been functionally different despite that detail. probably existed as some lore explanation for how powerful it was as a weapon or something.
@@jess648 it was originally intended as a "stealth crossbow" as stated by the HEV suit voice in the used weapon pickup voiceline, where as in retail it's mentioned by a scientist to be a "tranq-gun", so must be some strong tranquilizers if it's strong enough to be lethal to humans.
@@TylertheCC1010fan the Black Ops Assassins originally used it
I wonder if at one point environmental hazards were far more dangerous so these items were there to ward it off. they were probably cut because of how self-evidently situational they were like the bandage and tourniquet health items (basically intended as Half Life’s versions of Doom health bonuses and portable health iirc)
Recently as in a year ago?
I never knew these were technically still in the game, only a cut item, let alone to know that this antidote feature is still in the final game, even being misplaced in a map.
If something is unnecessary best to cut it. Sometimes less is more. The HEV suit is enough.
HEV had both a cut oxygen tank for water areas which was cut because water is barely used and a cut attachment separate from the long jump module that boosted jump height
Adrenaline = Totem of undying 😂
I thought this was going to be about why there's an antidote in the multiplayer map and some other functionality I didn't know about.
I love your videos :)
Also I'm not gonna say "first" I have a life, I don't care if I'm first.
Isnt this sort of a thing in half life 2 as well when you are attacked by a black headcrab?
they sorta look like counter strikes 1.6 grenades (smoke, flash, explosive)
ADRENALINE!!! I LOVE DRUGS!!!
How to make radioactive or poison water?
This guy sounds a little like Ben Shapiro.
everything except the adrenaline shot is so situational that adding it to the game wouldve done nothing
fyi, the emphasis is on quad, not ra, in quadrazid. QUAD ruh zid not quad RA zid
why does a multiplayer map have ai nodes in it?
The map is edites from an early Half-Life map, iirc. Thats why
Some multiplayer maps were previously intended as co-op missions. Could come from there.
there was cut Decay esque co-op maps from the base game and some of them were quickly reshaped for deathmatch I’d assume
probably cut for time and budget restrictions set upon them by Sierra Online, their intial publisher
Interesting find, but it looks really useless, I can see why they have cut it.
