Dive in. It's a ton of fun. Personally, I don't really tool on much below 4-5oz. However I do a bunch of finger carving on 2-3oz. I have a video on finger carving if you're interested.
I am just getting started in leather craft. I want to do floral and animal figure carving (men's wallets) can you give me a list of craft tool #'s or Barry King tools which I will need to do this style of tooling? Also interested in Sheridan style. Thank you.
one thing i don't see much of is tooling thinner leathers. 3-4 oz. It seems most people do demonstrations with 8/9 oz leather or higher. Probably better visually for burnishing when tooling. Do you do much in thinner leather or small detail artwork? or do you just stick with artwork that only comfortable fits your current tools
Tooling thinner leathers is definitely much more finicky for the main reason of leather warp and displacement. Because there is not as much mass to the leather as say a 5-9oz peice the stamp displaces the leather much more on thinner leather. However, I do plenty of finger carving on thinner leather and that might make a good video.
Great! Thank you! I have a Tandy swivel knife that I can’t get sharp. It always drags and doesn’t make a good cut. Also you’ve mentioned quality of leather. Does that really help and make a huge difference? Do you use Hermann Oak for all your tooling?
I am very glad and thankful that I found your channel. Your videos are in fact very informative and relaxing. Keep up the great work.
Thanks soo much. Means a ton
I love my Barry King tools. They are really worth every penny.
Hey next time you order sketching pencils give Musgrave a look, they're made in Shelbyville, TN while Kimberly's are made in China.
Thanks. Will definitely do that
I am so proud
Your momma be so proud
Awesome. I am thinking about trying my hand at this and learning. In your opinion what is the lightest OZ leather someone can tool on? 2, 3 OZ?

My Barry King swivel knife went dull super fast and I kept it covered and strop correctly. It just drags
Interesting. Do you ever use a stone on it? Also what leather are you using. That can also make a difference
I just wondering how did it go with the Chinese shoe patcher sewing machine, and also I have been waiting on your videos, been a while, saludos amigo
Sold the shoe patcher. I only got it working once. It was way too much of a headache

Please explain “finger carving”. Thanks.
@@270ranchtv7 finger carving is when you use your swivel knife to add decorative cuts to an area of leather. You dont bevel or tool anything
