Back in my school days, if your phone rang in class, the teacher would say "bring it here". That's it. And if did so, they'd confiscate it and take it to the principal/HOD's office and you would get it at the end of the year. Some teachers were lenient and they would give it back at the end of the class. It's likely that this kid refused to give it up. Hence the wrestling. The teacher was wrong for forcefully taking it. Maybe a principal should have been brought in. Bottom line, your kid shouldn't bring a phone to school. This lady is out here with her puppy dog eyes acting like her son did nothing and was just 'cool' about it.

I had biology teacher in high school who was unhinged, she had bipolar I think. And yeah... teachers need to be upfront about their mental health struggles and the schools that employ them need to guidelines for the students in place so that they know what to do when a teacher is having an episode. We were never told how to handle her violence and overall behaviour, the woman didn't even want to be asked questions but yet expected us to pass somehow. Township school are very much neglected, like they are prisons I don't know if it is because of how they are built but it needs to change. What this teacher did was not acceptable at all. If you're having personal problems rather say you're sick and avoid dealing with kids to avoid such situations. Students should not be bringing their phones to school. Or the teachers could have a container where students put in their phones for the duration of the class. I am a teacher too and we have a weak principal and have learners that can’t be expelled and they know it. They swear at us, take calls in class and smoke in public spaces, refuse to even go with us to the principal. They know that nothing will happen to them. We as the staff complained to see no result except the learner(s) become more emboldened by the knowledge. As much as I do NOT condone violence, I completely relate to this lady’s frustration. I have gotten to that point of frustration and before I get violent I simply chase the learner out - to separate myself and them. The problem is that even that’s illegal, but we are cornered. So now I get disciplined over chasing learners outside, but at least it’s better than resorting to violence.
