Tiny Tim remembered Russ Columbo in much the same way Bing did, as somebody who would have been a big star. Tiny even made a tribute album to Columbo, called Prisoner of Love, which he considered to be his finest album.

Still very few people remember who he was despite his growing popularity in the late 20's and early 30's. "Prisoner of Love" is probably his best remembered song, due to numerous covers by many artists including Frank Sinatra.
I loved watching Joe's show back in the 70's. It is one of the places that helped me discover old classic films and performers. Saw him interview the likes of Bing as well as his stories about the Jolsons and Cantors of the world. Love Joe.

Maybe look up Bing's latest books written by a brilliant guy who spent decades researching, who interviewed hundreds of people who knew Bing, including his two sons Gary and Phillip. Interesting that a lot of misinformation and half truths were dispelled. The two books that damaged Bing's reputation, his sons..which was explained about...the other which was completely debunked when investigated. Then maybe look up Bing's daughter who explains Gary explaining to her why he wrote what he did..appalling. Then look up the defensive quotes his other children gave when the book was released. Bing was no saint but definitely no monster. He loved those boys.

Son Gary trashed his memory in that book, but at the end of his life, took it all back. Bing, like the rest of us wasn't perfect, but he was a decent and humble human being, John Wayne once said he'd never heard him utter a bad word against anyone!
I to have read that his son recanted some of what he wrote in his book and was actually planning to release a tribute album to his father before he passed away. Unfortunately the damage had been done and Bing's reputation has suffered over the years. I found it truly amazing to read about the amount of people Bing helped out and looked after during his many years in show business, from acquaintances, friends other celebrities, family members and even total strangers. No he wasn't perfect but I agree that he was a decent and humble man and an extremely talented one. Didn't one of his best friends say he goes his own way and minds his own business, and that is what some people didn't understand about him? Never had the big entourage, never talked himself up and never played the big star. I think he's wonderful.
It reminds me of two folks who, in their prime, might not have ever met; Crosby was the biggest star around and Franklin was a local NYC host. But at that stage of their careers, they had the time for each other and frankly, there weren't many of their group still around and at least Franklin knew some of the same people that Bing Crosby knew.

It always says more about people who make such comments that they are projecting more about how they act than the person they're making such comments about.

And Bing may have enjoyed making the money but he also enjoyed sharing his good fortune over the years with so many friends, acquaintances and charities as well as doing endless performances and benefits to raise money for many causes. He was apparently extremely generous and very caring in helping out family and friends and other performers when they were having a hard time, but was very reluctant to be acknowledged for this help and quite often organised things through a third party because he was uncomfortable in accepting the gratitude and thanks that would have been forthcoming.
Read his son's book, Going My Own Way by Gary Crosby. This man was a monster to his sons, one committed suicide. Extreme physical and emotional violence and abuse. No excuse for it.

Bing was quite knowledeable about Russ Columbo. Listen to early recordings by both. There are many similarities in their styles.
