About a decade ago when I was in high school, I'd developed a fascination with the mandolin family of instruments, in particular the mandocello. Back in Old UA-cam there was just a video or two to prove it existed. Was showing them to a friend right now and I'm so happy to know there are people out here making great music with them!
Hello Luke, I’ve really enjoyed your videos and tunes. Had to laugh as I was about to comment on one of the older videos that it was nice to see some mandocello videos that weren’t all Bach and TADAA! Here it is! Very well done though. I have one myself and I appreciate being able to watch and learn from your technique. Thanks man!
Hi Scott! Thanks for your comment mate I’m so grateful to know that someone enjoys my videos. I have thought the same thing for so long, this g major Prélude seems to be 99% of anything Mandocello you see online! But, I had some people request it and I succumbed to the pressure and put it up on Facebook and it has blitzed anything I’ve posted in terms of numbers of views and interaction etc. So at the end of the day it was worth it 😂 but I know what you mean! Thanks again mate!
thanks so much for bringing that wonderful piece to UA-cam for all to hear. It's beautiful...almost as if written for your instrument. Is that standard tuning and who made that spectacular instrument?
Thanks you! Something I do a lot is trying to play along with actual cellists, you can learn so much from listening and playing along to great classical cellists. So much variety in how Bach is approached!
i have noticed some mandolinists just dont excercise correctly and therefore the sound is damped, mandolin can give you crisp sound but a rigurous technique is needed.
I can play the violin, viola, and mandolin (Originally classically trained on the viola) How easy of a transition would it be to play the mandocello? I absolutely love the sound but I'm worried about the fingering and size of the instrument.
The fingering can be similar to viola, as it’s the same tuning just an octave lower. I would research if any music shops in a reasonable distance have any in stock and then go there and spend 30mins messing around. You’ll know pretty quickly if the size of the instrument is going to be an issue. Also, it’s relative in scale length to an acoustic guitar if that helps
I'm curious what gauge and brand of strings you use for your mandocello. I just bought one...one of the Chinese Pango mandocellos. I set it up with a standard D'Addario set of strings (0.74, 0.48, 0.34, 0.22) and I'm just curious if you might use or consider using some lighter strings? They feel so heavy to me, so I'm curious if other folks use different gauges than that. Thanks!
Hi! I have tried lighter gauge strings, on this particular mandocello I have gone back to the standard d’addario as it really does sound better with the heavier gauge. I’m not at all opposed to folks going with lighter strings, whatever works for you and your instrument 👍
@@denverbass That is definitely true! I need to find a good place to get the job done, but I know it would make a world of difference! Right now with the standard strings it’s not easy to play and some of the frets are in need of adjustment!
Loving discovering your videos. I'm a cellist currently awaiting the arrival of my first mandocello (VERY excited). I was just wondering if you have any advice on picks? What pick do you use? Do you use different picks for different styles? I'm guessing I will be starting off with Bach...
@Hermi_Jones thanks for your comment and checking out my videos! Great to hear your getting a Mandocello! I mainly use the Bluechip CT55 picks, though I have enjoyed the d’Addario casein picks 👍 Be sure to subscribe to this channel and follow me on socials etc I’m about to release some Bach 😉
@@lukewilliamwright amazing, thanks so much! Funnily enough I got my brother the same pick for a mandolin many years ago and forgot about it. LOVE Chris Thile so I think we can trust it for sure! Have subscribed and can't wait to see your new releases.
Hi Delton! Thanks for your comment! I do have a pickup that Paul installed during the build, which is a K&K big twin. It’s a good enough sounding pickup that isn’t too intrusive on the instrument. 👍
@@lukewilliamwright oh wow! That’s pretty cool, most people I know have mandocellos as part of their mandolin collections, you must be a mandocello master then huh lol
Good question. Ancient scholars believed that tempo could be infinitely devised from the universe through the phases of the moon and thus the universe itself was seen as a great time keeper known as ‘Bullashittara’. Shakespeare famously wrote: ‘From whence cometh tempo? Doth tempo cometh from thine within?’ From a quantum perspective, what is tempo? And if we ask where it is, we are assuming it comes from somewhere. Then we must ask, What is somewhere?….What is what?….What is?….Is?
@@marcjakout Do a search for Mandocello on UA-cam and you'll see Mike Marshall doing the same thing with Bach. It's kind of like Orange Blossom, everyone expects the tempo to speed up at some point.

I have made one of 6 singles strings fcgdae with a huge compensation for the bridge.
A cowboy playing Bach. I'm blown away. This is how it's done.
Thanks so much!
Eyes closed. No tabs here folks. Pure memory. Knowing the song, knowing the instrument.

Beautiful, soulful performance of this Bach prelude, and I love the range of the mandocello for it. Great stuff! Best regards from Detroit.

Beautiful, fluid playing. You brought the piece to life. Not just a series of notes and arpeggios, but real, living music.

So I literally just learned about the Mandocello and this was the first thing I wanted to hear. Awesome job
Thanks so much mate!

Прекрасное исполнение..

По технологии все хорошо!

Желаю успехов!!!

Which is what I use on my Octave Mandolin / Irish Bouzouki . Fingering / fretwork looks the same.
CGDA
Yes so its sounds deeper and warmer. Fingering positions are the same as GDAE though.
Have ya ever tried playing octave mandolin? How many mandolins do you have? I really like this mandocello.
