I love how people think Iowa is the holy land for big bucks. There's some nice deer in places but definitely not everywhere. And public ground in the good areas you'll be right on top of everyone else. Good luck!

I'm from Iowa, this year was my third year hunting and first year bowhunting. I only hunt public land and took a 157'' 13pt, he easily weighed over 250 pounds. Two other bucks came in right after he took off about 50 yards and fell over, one looked to be bigger than the one I shot. Took him to the taxidermist, wont see him again for 16 months. This video doesn't hurt anyone's feelings from Iowa. Good luck!!

Iowa is worth the wait and the investment. The money spent nowadays on so called "land experts" and gimmicks of every kind in the social media hunting world should be the topic. Iowa is the ultimate example of managing your resource properly, and yes it costs money to do things at a higher level, no matter what you are doing.

I don't have any plans to go hunt in Iowa but I got a reality check today after pulling cards from the cameras on my property that have been in place for 2 months; I dont have any mature bucks this season! The largest I have day lighting is a 100 inch 8 point that might be 3.5 years old.
After considering how much money and time I spent putting in Summer and Fall food plots this year with seed and fertilizer costs being so high; a $1000.00 dollars for a chance at a trophy deer isn't too bad, all things considered.

PS - Has anyone ever wondered why we (Iowa) are getting all these social media and UA-cam hunting transplants that are making a killing from their content as a result of their residency?!
Thank you Iowa legislators and the Iowa bowhunters association for standing up to the outfitting and non resident lobby on almost ruining our hunting with some of their proposed things they wanted changed in the most recent legislative sessions.

I 100 percent agree with you I live in MN and hunted Iowa twice once in 2016 and again in 2021. In 2016 I took a 130" buck. In 2021 tag soup. I just cannot justify that kind of money anymore for a tag. I am going to give Wisconsin a go next year. The ironic part is I took my biggest buck to date in 2019 a 171" 13 point right here in my home state of MN.

My father killed a 380in bull in Colorado in a otc unit the fun thing is that wasn’t the biggest bull he seen. It’s unit 60 and I highly suggest trying it out if you’re into elk second or third season is the best time because it’s the winter ground for the elk in Utah, it has like a 33% success rate it’s super underrated because it’s the smallest unit in Colorado I think if not pretty close to it

140” deer is a world class deer, not by book standards but by hunter deer kill standards. No one goes to Iowa to save money. You go for the experience. This is like saying there is a Golden Corral in the town near a lake and a motel 6 on the water front for cheap, just a block away is Jon boat rental company. This lake is 45 minutes from the house, why would you book a cruise you saved three years for when you can do the Elle May cruise for half the price! Less than 10% of hunters are hunting to feed their family, those guys don’t leave their home state, EVER.

Money is the least important reason to hunt or not hunt Iowa or another state. I’m not rich and never have been. I save, scout and devise some kind of plan to out think the other bow hunters out there. Plus I take a month off to hunt the state m focused on that year. 2024 should be the year I draw for zone 9. Been applying for 5 years and all the while been waiting I’ve hunted 4 other states. After Iowa comes Illinois for me. Unless I don’t get drawn. Then Illinois gets bumped up. I’ve found over the years a month off gives me so much more patience to let the hunt play out and not be so rushed to complete a true hunt of a lifetime in a week. That usually leads to disaster as you overplay an advantage or stand site based on time. The clock ticks by so fast in a 6 or 7 day hunt. Guys take too many chances too fast.

An Iowa resident is an individual that maintains a permanent place of abode in Iowa or is domiciled in Iowa for 183 days or more. A Nonresident of Iowa is an individual that is not domiciled in Iowa and is a resident of another state. A Part-Year Resident is an individual that moved into or out of Iowa during the year. I say bring your bow if you think there is a chance you will file for residency.

All of these so-called deer states really get me. They have no idea how much revenue, out-of-state owners piranha in terms of hotels, gas, restaurants, etc. many states would give the right arm to have tourist applying to come spend money in their state. As for me, I’m done applying to lottery states. Let’s show them what it looks like to have limits imposed. We’ll limit ourselves, thank you very much.

Are you trying to discourage people to hunt Iowa to improve your odds in the draw? I've hunted there since 2001 and with outfitters and on my own ground. I believe it's one of the best states for your chance at giant bucks. Have numerous pictures of world class bucks. You aren't going to harvest a giant every time but just to see one is incredible. I get the draw and maybe have other options for waiting. Missouri is a good option. But I'm from Michigan and would never hunt deer at home. To disappointing. Just my opinion.

My question is to you my Good fellow! I’ve never hunted Wisconsin I have friends there that do however . What if other states charged non-residents a lot to hunt personally, I think it’s outrageous some of the prices these states are getting away with. What you’re not realizing is. You’re making the sport, not as community friendly 2 you’re promoting people from out of state to stay out. 3 your funding Game Warden ‘s to get new trucks every year my family was a Game Warden. And I’ve seen some of the inside works of how it worked back then. So the states pillage on other states hunters. It’s just outrageous in my opinion. When states should just say hey, we don’t want out of state hunters. If you would like to move to our state and confined to our society. Then, by all means we welcome you. I’m sorry that I disagreed with you, but it needed to be said. The state that I came from Florida had a great set up when it comes to the Hunter resident and nonresident But happy Fourth of July when I’m writing this. You’re around license for hunting and fishing and everything. Is around 315 that comes with the turkey license fishing license freshwater hunting license Muzzleloader stamp archery stamp deer hunting stamp And about
everything you need Except saltwater license for the year as a non-resident
