I recently pulled some old external synths out of the closet AND this is timely and helpful! I have multiple midi controllers, like you. The only issue was that every external synth generally only has 1 output pair, so even though they are multi-timbral with midi 1 - 16, you can only really record 1 consolidated audio track at a time.
This has been an absolutely brilliant piece of tuition, I have an Arturia midi keyboard and have just purchased a new 88 key midi keyboard so it looks like I can run the two at the same time now, thanks to you. I may have to get a usb hub as my Mac mini is already using all of the connection ports but this will be like heaven for me. Thank you so much Chris for showing how to achieve this. Should get my new keyboard in a few days and can’t wait 😛
I appreciate the rapid overview of all the possibilities here. And the main one of assigning different midi controllers to work with different instruments/tracks is the most useful for me and I wouldn't have known without being a subscriber. Some of the rest of the stuff you covered so quickly that it's difficult to know how those things might be useful. Like 3 instruments layered on 1 track with different midi channels. Why would one want to do that?
Thank you sooooooo much!!!! This way is so much cleaner. I'm glad Logic finally stepped up and changed this feature. In my opinion, it'a about time. They could've a while ago if they wanted to but that's just my take.
Wow this is great. Thanks so much for surfacing these tiny detail changes that can significantly improve workflow! Also, I'm so mindblowned about using different MIDI Out Channels with Studio Horns, I had no idea!
Thanks for the video. I'm literally trying to setup a piece of hardware and having this issue. This video shows how to set up separate midi controllers, how would you setup something with multiple sequencers like a beatstep pro? thanks for channel it's a wealth of knowledge!
Thank you, I was recently wondering what felt different about that inspector and this kinda answers that. I'm real curious about midi 2.0...though I don't own any 2.0 gear yet
I just updated my Logic Pro to 10.7.4 This is a great update. Although how do I get my controllers into that "Midi in port " drop down window? I have a Roland keyboard midi out to the midi in of a 2box drum module then midi out to midi in of Steinberg UR44 interface. So when I go to that "Midi in port" drop down window. I have Steinberg port 1, port 2 and all options. I have tried port 1, port 2 for the keys and it still plays the drums and keys at the same time. It was easy for me with auto demix. Now I can't figure this out. Please help.
thanks for the video, I was trying to understand, but can I use one external instrument (Motif XF) on say different midi tracks with separate software instruments top be recorded,? Such a piano on midi channel 1, bass on midi channel 2 and guitar on midi channel 3 to be recorded separately using the Motif only. Knowing I would need to get the audio somehow. thanks in advance
IMHO this was the most important change to 10.7, which I can't run yet because I'm not on BigSur yet. But anyway question for you or anyone that is using 10.7 with this feature. Here is the question: When you are using midi input port directly to a track, does the midi input SKIP the environment cabling entirely? In other words, in that mode, its not possible to insert environment processing between the port and the sequencer. correct? I can't check this because I don't have it yet. Secondly, if you have the midi input port set to NONE or ALL, then do you get back the environment processing?
I have a korg nautilus....when I add multiple external instruments....for example a bass and then a piano...it plays what I select on the korg in real-time....how can I keep both instruments on the separate stems?
Is there a way to set different zones on my midi controller to control different midi instruments? I want my M Audio workstation, which has something called "zones/groups" and some controls I don't understand, and I'd like the bottom few octaves to control one software instrument, like a bass synth, and the higher registers to control a different instrument. Is this something I'd assign in logic or on my workstation/midi controller?
Hey Bro, let me please reach out to you with my question. As far as I see you have the AUDIO / MIDI Tool natively shipped with every Apple Mac since years. I thought all the time, that I can just make my configuration there and merge it just to one only Virtual Midi Driver. So I can use that virtual mididriver anywhere on my system in any DAW or process I like. In that manner I thought I do not rely on that new feature, because the other solution is more generic, what would you say about it? Thanks and best regards, Tim!
Great tutorial, thank you! I am having one issue though... I have a Roland MC-707 connected, and each channel of the 707 has a dedicated channel in Logic. Everything seems to be set up correctly, and Logic records the the incoming midi, to a degree. I see the red midi region pop up and I can even see the individual mid notes pop up in the editor as it records, but as soon as I hit stop, the midi region completely disappears, nothing is saved. Any idea why this would be happening? I feel like this must be a logic glitch as opposed to an issue with my set up?
This feature was long due.. Happy that it is finally here
Thank you so much, I have spent hours looking through websites, to try to workout how to play 2 controllers at once 🤣Many thanks!👏
This is wonderful! Thank you for bringing to light all the game changing elements of Logic, as always.
Finally 🤩 that’s the feature I was waiting for
Great clean explanation, as always. Thanks Chris!

OMG amazing!! I've literally been trying to achieve playing multiple hardware synths at once for years! FINALLY!!! THANK YOU :)
Thank you sooooooo much!!!! This way is so much cleaner. I'm glad Logic finally stepped up and changed this feature. In my opinion, it'a about time. They could've a while ago if they wanted to but that's just my take.
This has been extremely helpful. Thank you for such a great tutorial.
Thanks so much Chris 🙏🏻🤟

Finding the original way was a game changer but soo clunky. One day when I upgrade OSX I'll get the new Logic too, this looks so much easier!
thanks as always. what screen recording app do you use?

Very helpful
I have an Arturia KeyStep which has a built-in sequencer and arpeggiator. Is there a way to NOT trigger the arp/seq start when hitting play in Logic?

Great vid! Is there a way to assign multiple controllers for MIDI in port, but not “all”?

Hey - are you using one of the new Macs?
Thanks, this got me sorted....
Interesting. Can you use more than 1 bluetooth to MIDI device in Logic?
