The first time that I seen the concept of a blanket pin I just for some reason thought it was the coolest thing. Now having it mixed with something functional has me at a loss for words 😮
That is a very cool use! I think I’m going to mark off my blanket pin in 15 degree increments, add in a large nail, which I carry anyway for punching holes. With a weight and string to serve as a plumb Bob, to get a right angle. I think I will mark off the full 360 degrees for other uses. Thank you! As always you provide excellent information.
I think you should add a nice 38/357 magnum revolver to your kit. It is a very versitile platform, being able to take small game from rabbits and squirrels, to deer and even larger hooved game, protectiom from Bear and Moose, protection from 2 legged Jackesses, even snake shot if needed. They come in all sizes and weights, and you can plink cheap with 38 special. Some can even be converted to allow you to shoot 9mm and 380. A very versitile tool indeed.
I luv this. Solar navigation is a recent interest, so I'm really enjoying seeing all of the different ways to practice. I went out last weekend & pretty successfully used your technique from another video of lining up with a shadow and doing half left/ right face movements to find north. Great idea to tweak the blanket pin to make it a multi use item.
Hey brother Dave?? I noticed you have a square and compass on your ring finger!!! Are you a traveling man? Looking to the East? Love your channel, from one Mason to another!!
It should be clearly noted that in some places, such as here on the Puget Sound, where the magnetic declination is about 20°, that sun compass is way more accurate than a magnetic compass that cannot compensate for magnetic declination, because it points to the geographic pole, not the magnetic pole.
This was great Dave! I have a question. What if a person doesn't have a watch or compass. Is it possible to align the blanket pin on a North/South line? Thanks for the video. I love this idea!
So my question is, one must know the direction in order to find the time or know the time in order to find the direction am I understanding that right?

I first discovered Dave in a series of books I found on a shelf in a cabin in the remote woods. Solid dude.

That's pretty slick, I think I may find my blanket pin and put some marks in it like you did.
Thanks Dave! Land nav is my favorite subject!
Informative video Dave, thanks for all that you do. I also see you are heading East with your working tools.
Ei Dave, obrigado por tudo que você nos ensina. Super like! 👍👍👍

That’s on point. Should really help when you’re traveling.
Cool idea. Variant of the stick in the ground method. You are not surveying, you are navigating.
It must be a great feeling to be a master of the bushcraft.
Your videos are the best Dave. Keep them coming. I really like the ideas you have. Keeps me thinking.

If it's high carbon steel you may be able to use it as a flint and steel too.
So my question is, one must know the direction in order to find the time or know the time in order to find the direction am I understanding that right?
Add a Viking Sunstone (calcium carbonate crystal) to find the sun location on foggy/cloudy days.
Will you be making these for sale?
That's a fancy blanket pin! Y'all sell those?
Always stow minimal kit in the ALICE pack. & only stow kit w multiple applications. Minimize. Minimize. Minimize. The more we know the less we stow.
Are you going to sell these blanket pins at the Pathfinder Store?
😎🇺🇸
👍
Reat idea!

Any chance of your company reproducing the 1920's Sunwatch?
could you add a mark to the center of the pin?
