  • It's that fun time of year where the turtles are laying eggs! I've had a few laying eggs already but decided to make a video on this latest one. We mix up some vermiculite, take a tour of the box turtle enclosure, look at a few babies, then we dig up the latest clutch of 3 toed box turtle eggs. After that we put them in the incubator and we are good to go.

Hi Brenda, thank you for the compliment. Sorry to hear about the fire ant trouble. I read that a good way to deal with fire ants is to get a product called amdro. You want to put it in a glass jar with a lid. Put something else in there that the ants would like to eat, such as a hot dog. Poke some holes in the lid and lay it on its side. That will keep rain and water out, as well as any other animals. Put several of these around your yard and/or your pen. The fire ants will carry it back to their nests. Hopefully that is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Hello, what is the temp that you have the eggs in the incubator and how long after they hatch do you keep them in the incubator?

Hi, I incubate at 84-85 degrees. I usually keep them in the incubator for a week after hatching, so they stay warm and absorb their yolk sack before I remove them. Thanks for watching and for the question!

@@shanewilliamsoutdoors7153 Thank you. I’m going to try the incubator if I ever have eggs.

What’s the best incubator to use for eastern box turtles eggs?

Hi Dahyana, I use a HovaBator 1602N. It’s a fairly cheap model but it holds the temperature reliably. It’s the one that you see in my videos. There’s many different varieties that are a lot more expensive but this has worked very well for me. Thanks for watching!

It looks like the Hovabator 1602N is for chickens. Am I looking at the right one or is there different models?

Yes, this is mainly used for chickens. It works well for reptiles.though. Nothing fancy but does a good job holding the temperature. Thanks for watching!
