Hey guys! Good to be back :) After recording this video earlier in the morning I had some time to catch up with the community, social media, stream, and talk to some pros. Their opinions seem to be split between RG being OP/Broken and balance/fixed. There's no doubt that Royal Giant win and use rates have sky-rocketed since the buff earlier this week, but I do think he's easier to counter, too. I expect to see a lot more PEKKA, Mini PEKKA, Inferno Tower and even less siege because of it (especially Xbow). My biggest concern, as I mention in the video, is that this may hurt more F2P players in the 3-5k trophy range, as he's still very easy to level up (being a common, that hasn't changed). What do you guys think? Interested in hearing from you on this polarizing topic!

Sure range nerf cancels out with damage buff well, that well that you encounter RG in every match. Yeah sure people, it was a balance not a huge buff. Come on man don't cover your eyes
I agree! My only concern is that he may be even more of an annoyance for F2P, even with the meta adjusting. That said, time will tell and I could very easily be wrong.
Xbow needs buff but I haven’t lost to RG since “buff” with my xbow. I just played a defensive xbow then push off that with another xbow.. it’s worked so far.
If pros are using it, it just shows how op it is despite the range nerf. Over leveled rg users in the 4000-5000 will be more annoying and they will probably beat their high score
I think the idea was to give the card meaningful counter play and strategic play with a range reduction. Then they gave the insane damage buff to make the win condition more rewarding of played right.

@@ChatWithAsh I'm at 4600 to 4900 right now and my level 12 mini pekka can't chop them down fast enough so I'm already experiencing this issue. I can't imagine how it is around 3800 to 4000.
I think what runham was saying was that when people fight against a high level RG it's not because the person has over leveled it, its because the card was underpowered so when people used it they would drop in trophies to a point where they were battling people with lower levels then them so they were finally able to win and it was annoying to the people.
I haven’t played ladder because this is what I feared. I don’t have high enough levels on my counter cards to deal with this crap. Signed a salty xbow player.
I find it refreshing to see new decks entering the meta. Right now the Royal Giant looks very good but I think it's too early to say whether or not it's over-powered. It's nice to see the barbarian barrel in a viable position.
Golem triple spell with barb barrel over log works as well You're worse off against tombstone, but you can make really cheap defenses with it over log to avoid commiting a ton of elixir, especially against bridgespam players
I honestly think RG is at best balanced as is, He's far less overwhelming on ladder now, and it's so difficult to get a single shot off with him that it's actually very hard to actually win with him.

I think it's nice to have RG balanced for competitive play and challenges but I also worry about ladder in the 3-5k range. If, overall, he's much better (win rates are much higher early on here) shouldn't it still be an issue as he's still a common card that can still be over-leveled. Even if his mechanic is less frustrating?
The shell of the Royal Giant deck counters Royal Giant well. Guards, Electro, with the Furnace up from earlier. Then you can counter push with remaining troops?
oddly enough, I'm not fond of the RG buff, even as an RG player I actually preferred the old RG before "buff". Honestly i would have made him a higher rarity balance the stats accordingly based on rarity, and still decrease the range just not as severe, just enough to put him in range of the inferno tower/ bomb tower, and since he would be a higher rarity it would help cut down the over leveling issue, and would still not be "op" maybe a slight damage buff like 5-9%. but that is just me. but as of playing RG, I'll pass back to my Giant skeleton, sparky composition.
Honestly they should have (changed the range to 6 from 6.5 , gave it a 20% damage increase, lowered the heath by 15% and changed the hit speed by -.2 seconds.) This would make the card more powerful, let it shoot faster and let it still keep the range, but also balanced it by lowering the Heath by 15% so it makes it easier to counter Overall it would be a balanced rework
Gotta love RG! It's such a different archetype and I think it's healthy to have within the game. Something that's a tank but ranged, giving a shorter time to tower is an entirely different play style and definitely promotes different matchups and playstyles, making the game fresher and overall more tactical. RG loses to Giant and Hog decks generally, but will beat stuff like Golem and Siege generally. It's super interesting and I love the new changes, even if that makes me sound like a filthy RG user ahaha As for Davide, he's the only player I've won a 2v2 with in my last like 10 2v2 games ahaha. Super good player, but also super weird having someone I know on CWA. Great video keeping up updated on the newest RG filth! ;)
I'm a hog player and I actually lose against every royal giant, because of the lightning meltin my tesla (RG melts my tesla in 3 hits, too btw). I think it's good to see him every now and then, but it's wrong to see him in 2/5 times, especially if you feel him like an hard counter (i play 2.8 hog cycle and 3.0 xbow cycle, recently maxed out, rip)
I agree with you 100% Bailey, when talking about tournament level standard. I love the diversity and agree with the mechanical changes. My concern is for ladder in that 3-5k trophy range. Even though he's a bit easier to counter, he's also just as easy to overlevel. That said, I've been wrong MANY times before. We'll see how it plays out. Keep up the great work over on your channel!
i completely disagree with the rg beeing "easier to counter". before the update, (as a 2.6 cycle player) i could use a cannon and skeletons to completely deny his damage. timing and proper position were required, but it was beneficial (2 elixir advantage in defense). now the rg blows away my cannon with 3 shots, no matter what. even when adding musketeer to said defense, the rg is still able to bind with the tower ... and when backed up with a spell, a half tower can be gone without much to do about it. tl dr : i really think this buff went too far

60% might have been a little high, but I really like the new RG. I main Pekka, so I don't mind seeing more RGs in the arena. I played a challenge with RG and it felt really strong but not too OP. I would understand a small DPS nerf in the next balance update just to fine tune the RG but I wouldn't be too upset if Supercell didn't do it. Also, I love Giant Snowball. It took some time but I love it
I think Rumham/CR's team thought process was this: RG is commonly seen in the 3-4k trophy range as an overleveled card BECAUSE the win rates are low (i.e. it is a bard card). The people who play with the card are unable to break through that trophy range due to the card being bad. As payers get higher on the ladder, levels become more homogenized because players begin to hit (or near) max level cards. This is where the RG becomes bad. As you climb, RG naturally gets worse. Therefore buffing the RG only seems logical... this is where I disagree. While this line of thinking is correct in a vacuum, it fails to take into account that it is a common win condition (and the only one, disregarding siege). Having a viable win condition that is easily over leveled is what seemingly leads to the frustration of the many players that go against the card. Not only can RG now be over leveled, it's a busted card too. This will make playing against it even worse than before. Buffing the RG will not suddenly allow all the 3k players to rise above. The systemic issue of overleveling still exists regardless. As someone who is in the higher 6k range, "overleveled" cards are less of a problem for me. So disregarding the systemic issues with RG, I think RG is just a poorly designed card that's not very fun to play against, especially as someone who favors decks without building. There isn't much interaction with RG. Much like rush decks in other card games, RG feels like there isn't much to the matchup other than the matchup itself (meaning there is little room to outplay an RG player and little room for an RG player to outplay their opponent). RG feels like the most matchup dependent card in the game, which isn't a good feeling for either the RG player or the opponent.
I believe the point in the buff to RG was to make him stronger, but at the same time harder to get to the tower, which is more important. This aspect kind of makes him a bit "harder to play" or a little more "skillful" (now you have to be cognizant of your opponent's counters and card cycle). I believe it wasn't an unhealthy buff, we just have to wait to the meta to counter him properly
I was playing challenge w lavaloon and this deck came. I was surprised and grossed out by it but then this deck appeared everywhere. Then I realized Ash must have uploaded this deck

i'm a F2P on ladder and my pb is 4900s but still think it's pretty over buffed with 60% + dmg with only a draw back of 1.5 range tbh is a massive massive buff and be foolish to not abuse it if your's is already maxed
Okay your opinion counts but we all should look what we play with. Like we play with golems that give golem and all deck behind him or hog that is almost give guaranted hit on a tower and to be serious just about 11 hog hits means tower

I’ve been seeing a lot of others posting videos about RG decks. I haven’t faced anyone playing with him yet because I only played a few matches since the beginning of this season.
if you buff defenses, other building-attacking units like giant or hog will become pretty much useless ... because the defensive buildings are currently well balanced with hog and giant in terms of benefit and cost ... just the rg is out of balance. if you increase tesla/cannon/... hp or dmg, hog will be un-playable and giant will struggle as well
So defenses should get buffed to counter beatdown no matter what that does to hog and balloon? If beatdown cards are too strong. Those should get a nerf. Buffing counter cards to OP cards is not the way to go.
If you get matched with a level 13 anywhere below 4600 it means that said lvl 13 sucks. I actually feel more confident when I get matched with a level 13 than a lvl 12 tbh
For me, @4600, royal giant is definitely worse and more common, but the deck I was using anyway has some pretty good royal giant counters in the sparky and mini pekka. Gotta be careful to bait out the zap with bats or spear goblins though, because they can get off a lot of extra damage if they zap the sparky. Alternatively you could just let them zap and go for a huge counter push or opposite lane push where they choose to defend sparky everything else.
Let me tell u royal giant is nasty in 2v2 because when u are in death match u can put him in pocket and rage him. BOOM princess tower down! BTW u brought me to challenger thx!
I think what Seth said was that all max Royal Giants users will eventually climb up to max troops range, which is more fair than seeing a lvl 13 RG against lvl 11 cards. We need to wait a few weeks to months before the whole ladder adjusts though.
Ash I would agree with the part that you said if they "just"buffed him he would be even more of a harm to lower lvl, but they took away his range which gives him a bit more skill to use and easier to counter so it was not rly a buff I would say it was a balance
While I certainly agree that it's easier to counter him, if it wasn't a buff than why would his win rates skyrocket? Even RumHam himself said he considered it an overall "10% buff"
Dude it takes the same skill as it did before: you spam it at the bridge, and support it with a spell/ Ewiz. Don't need much skill at all, just money spent on leveling him up. Only difference is that now it when it conects it frigging demolishes the tower. Definately a bad move from supercell, I don't know who they're trying to convince with all this "making it more F2P friendly" BS cause it's obviously going more in the other direction
I have a question.. If ice wiz's and snowball's slowdown is increased.. Did it also affect the slowdown of ice golem? I'm asking this cuz all three cards had the same slowdown duration prior to the update. Thx

I like how supercell acted as though they heard from the community so much so that they even mentioned that they knew the players would be skeptical for buffing the rg. Well, even though the range nerf makes it easier for the rg to target buildings, overleveled rgs can probably 2-3 shot a goddamn cannon. I havent been playing clash royale for a long time and this is the reason why i quitted playing ladder.
That intro 😂😂😂, also rg needs a nerf asap, why didn't they change the rarity of the card , the one problem I had with rg is it been over leveled but now it does 60% more damage plus its easy to max out, this is worst than mortar hog deck.
Once I saw the change I predicted RG/Lightning was a combo that would surface. Not being able to outrange canons and inferno towers has brought a heavy spell meta with him.
I generally don't lose to royal giant but I lose to the fact that most royal giant decks in my trophy range play double small spells which can often be a pain when playing tornado log bait.
I am a 4500/4900 player and the meta was already 90% made of elite barbarians or royal giant (mostly elite barbs). now it is 80% royal giant at the point where I have to not to push for the season, me being a siege player. I will go down in trophies and tank people with underleveled cards so I can join the club

@ClashWithAsh. I have been running mirrored heal in 2v2. Absolute destruction. No one expects heal never less mirrored heal. For real though, one push wins using mirrored heal.
Wow, Royal Giant win rate in grand challenges went up 21% and usage rate went up 7% on Stats Royale. Pretty sure that's a strong indication of a buff lol.

I think it's cool to see rg on top of ladder. But at the 4000-4700 range, there is more rg than before which makes rg more anoing.

There is no good replacement for an under leveled furnace, so a tesla or goblin hut would be your best bet.

I love this buff to the rg bc my miner poison pekka cycle deck takes it down effortlessly, but hopefully they don't Nerf the pekka.

60% might have been a little high, but I really like the new RG. I main Pekka, so I don't mind seeing more RGs in the arena. I played a challenge with RG and it felt really strong but not too OP. I would understand a small DPS nerf in the next balance update just to fine tune the RG but I wouldn't be too upset if Supercell didn't do it.
Also, I love Giant Snowball. It took some time but I love it
I think Rumham/CR's team thought process was this:
RG is commonly seen in the 3-4k trophy range as an overleveled card BECAUSE the win rates are low (i.e. it is a bard card). The people who play with the card are unable to break through that trophy range due to the card being bad. As payers get higher on the ladder, levels become more homogenized because players begin to hit (or near) max level cards. This is where the RG becomes bad. As you climb, RG naturally gets worse. Therefore buffing the RG only seems logical... this is where I disagree.
While this line of thinking is correct in a vacuum, it fails to take into account that it is a common win condition (and the only one, disregarding siege). Having a viable win condition that is easily over leveled is what seemingly leads to the frustration of the many players that go against the card. Not only can RG now be over leveled, it's a busted card too. This will make playing against it even worse than before. Buffing the RG will not suddenly allow all the 3k players to rise above. The systemic issue of overleveling still exists regardless.
As someone who is in the higher 6k range, "overleveled" cards are less of a problem for me. So disregarding the systemic issues with RG, I think RG is just a poorly designed card that's not very fun to play against, especially as someone who favors decks without building. There isn't much interaction with RG. Much like rush decks in other card games, RG feels like there isn't much to the matchup other than the matchup itself (meaning there is little room to outplay an RG player and little room for an RG player to outplay their opponent). RG feels like the most matchup dependent card in the game, which isn't a good feeling for either the RG player or the opponent.
I've been requesting only barbarian barrels on Sundays ever since the barbarian barrel came out hoping it would ever be strong :P I'm soooooo happy!!!

I believe the point in the buff to RG was to make him stronger, but at the same time harder to get to the tower, which is more important. This aspect kind of makes him a bit "harder to play" or a little more "skillful" (now you have to be cognizant of your opponent's counters and card cycle). I believe it wasn't an unhealthy buff, we just have to wait to the meta to counter him properly

royal giant is disgusting even for a 4600s player which is sorta trash but less trash than 3000s
Yea, we'll see what happens. As I said in the video, I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time) but I still worry about F2P players on ladder. I think it's nice to have RG balanced for competitive play and challenges but I also worry about ladder in the 3-5k range.

i'm a F2P on ladder and my pb is 4900s but still think it's pretty over buffed with 60% + dmg with only a draw back of 1.5 range tbh is a massive massive buff and be foolish to not abuse it if your's is already maxed

I’ve been seeing a lot of others posting videos about RG decks. I haven’t faced anyone playing with him yet because I only played a few matches since the beginning of this season.
Defenses need buffs, especially tesla and inferno tower. Tesla for xbow, itower to counter this beatdown crap

if you buff defenses, other building-attacking units like giant or hog will become pretty much useless ... because the defensive buildings are currently well balanced with hog and giant in terms of benefit and cost ... just the rg is out of balance.
if you increase tesla/cannon/... hp or dmg, hog will be un-playable and giant will struggle as well
So defenses should get buffed to counter beatdown no matter what that does to hog and balloon? If beatdown cards are too strong. Those should get a nerf. Buffing counter cards to OP cards is not the way to go.

If you get matched with a level 13 anywhere below 4600 it means that said lvl 13 sucks. I actually feel more confident when I get matched with a level 13 than a lvl 12 tbh

For me, @4600, royal giant is definitely worse and more common, but the deck I was using anyway has some pretty good royal giant counters in the sparky and mini pekka. Gotta be careful to bait out the zap with bats or spear goblins though, because they can get off a lot of extra damage if they zap the sparky. Alternatively you could just let them zap and go for a huge counter push or opposite lane push where they choose to defend sparky everything else.
Let me tell u royal giant is nasty in 2v2 because when u are in death match u can put him in pocket and rage him. BOOM princess tower down! BTW u brought me to challenger thx!

I think what Seth said was that all max Royal Giants users will eventually climb up to max troops range, which is more fair than seeing a lvl 13 RG against lvl 11 cards. We need to wait a few weeks to months before the whole ladder adjusts though.
Ash I would agree with the part that you said if they "just"buffed him he would be even more of a harm to lower lvl, but they took away his range which gives him a bit more skill to use and easier to counter so it was not rly a buff I would say it was a balance
While I certainly agree that it's easier to counter him, if it wasn't a buff than why would his win rates skyrocket? Even RumHam himself said he considered it an overall "10% buff"

Dude it takes the same skill as it did before: you spam it at the bridge, and support it with a spell/ Ewiz. Don't need much skill at all, just money spent on leveling him up. Only difference is that now it when it conects it frigging demolishes the tower. Definately a bad move from supercell, I don't know who they're trying to convince with all this "making it more F2P friendly" BS cause it's obviously going more in the other direction

I like how supercell acted as though they heard from the community so much so that they even mentioned that they knew the players would be skeptical for buffing the rg. Well, even though the range nerf makes it easier for the rg to target buildings, overleveled rgs can probably 2-3 shot a goddamn cannon. I havent been playing clash royale for a long time and this is the reason why i quitted playing ladder.
That intro 😂😂😂, also rg needs a nerf asap, why didn't they change the rarity of the card , the one problem I had with rg is it been over leveled but now it does 60% more damage plus its easy to max out, this is worst than mortar hog deck.

Once I saw the change I predicted RG/Lightning was a combo that would surface. Not being able to outrange canons and inferno towers has brought a heavy spell meta with him.

I generally don't lose to royal giant but I lose to the fact that most royal giant decks in my trophy range play double small spells which can often be a pain when playing tornado log bait.

I am a 4500/4900 player and the meta was already 90% made of elite barbarians or royal giant (mostly elite barbs). now it is 80% royal giant at the point where I have to not to push for the season, me being a siege player. I will go down in trophies and tank people with underleveled cards so I can join the club

@ClashWithAsh. I have been running mirrored heal in 2v2. Absolute destruction. No one expects heal never less mirrored heal. For real though, one push wins using mirrored heal.

Wow, Royal Giant win rate in grand challenges went up 21% and usage rate went up 7% on Stats Royale. Pretty sure that's a strong indication of a buff lol.
