Haha I was definitely there once. 😂 keep on practicing! Remember you don't need much air at all to get the click sound down. After that you can focus more on the airflow, which makes it sound more full.
If you're still having troubles getting the right sound, check out my newest video, I go through a couple different alternate explanations: ua-cam.com/video/gSWpCdGWRuY/v-deo.html
Spit to the Rhythm actually I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t know anymore because he did and interview and taught the interviewer to beat box with the inward snare. What I was talking about was a long time ago. My outward snare sounds like his inward so I just thought but I think you’re right about him using it most of the time.
I started out by learning an “outward” K snare and I find that I get too much air when I do them like this instead. Do you have some suggestions for me?
Yeah! That's definitely a problem that still happens occasionally for me now if I commit to a beat I'm not prepared for when freestyling. Practice by just messing around with the sound enough that you find what is the "core" of the sound. When first learning a sound, we all waste a ton on energy doing some unnecessary movements that actually don't add to the end result. (Simple bass drum is a very good example of this, get your friends to try it and you'll see 😂) You'll find that most sounds can actually be done with VERY little air. But of course, it you use more air, it might sound a little more full. But try to get to that point where you can create that *click* with minimal effort. Uhh... That's long haha. Hope it makes sense! 🙈
Yeah, it's a "psh" snare (. What @nani is saying is pretty much right. It's a kick combined with a "sh" sound. I like to do it on the side of my mouth, I feel it gives a better attack. But plenty of people do it right in the center. And thanks! Hopefully more breakdown videos coming soon! :D
I lose you at about 5:44. You're making almost a k sound, whereas mine sounds like a really muffled t. Anything I do forward sounds like a really muffled t. Any advice?
I am having this problem as well; when I press the front on the roof of my mouth, it makes more of a hissing noise. Do you still pronounce it as a t or do you transition to a k-ish sound?
@@charisa.5913 Hey, so since none of the english language uses that part of the tongue, it's hard to say what it really is :D But if you're getting a hissing, that might mean you're not building enough pressure before you release, and not releasing fast enough. I've been thinking about another way to teach this. I hope to upload a follow up later today, I'll keep you posted!

Sorry I posted my original reply from a different account 😬 Thanks! Pop filters should be around $10 or so -- I haven't bought a cheap one that didn't do its job just fine. This one actually came with a phone tripod, the whole setup was like 20 bucks. So it's like 3 inches wide. But any pop filter on amazon should be just fine. 👍 You can go double filter if you're feeling fancy :)
Really weird question: would you happen to know what beatboxing sounds Kevin uses in "Mary Did you Know?" My friends and I want to perform it for something at my church, and I can beatbox a little bit, but I need to know what beatbox sounds he's using so I can learn them.
I think it's mostly the same stuff, if I remember correctly. You can check out my tutorial for La La Latch for the basic set of sounds. Take note that "Mary Did You Know" does have a boatload of reverb in the recorded version, so maybe watching some live version will give you more insight into what he does.
Both! Although you can do a sound with just one side, it sounds slightly different though. When you do both sides the sound is a lot more full. You can check out the follow up video I have in the description.
I would say timing. Breath control comes pretty naturally when you practice a ton. Your body will figure out how to do sounds pretty efficiently. Timing takes concentrated effort and training.
Whenever I do this it starts hurting my throat after a little bit, what am I doing wrong? Idk if I’m using a different technique or what cuz I kind of use the back of my tongue and suck in air if that makes since lol
Hmm, hurting your throat? That doesn't sound too good. What kind of hurt is it, like it's tired? Or it feels like a sore throat or something? Either way be sure to get plenty of water and rest for a while if it starts hurting. I made an alternate explanation video (link in the description) you can check out, maybe it will help. Otherwise let me know!
Vocal percussion on a whole 'nother level coming through my mind

Glad I could help!
I love this, this is so helpful, thank you!!
Does the beat come from your mind on a whole notha level of vocal percussion?
thanks for that explanation!
I like this!
Wow, so clever
Hey thanks so much I am a starting musician and this video helped a lot thanks
Kevin doesn’t always use the inward snare most of the time but he uses it as a breathing technique said by other members in the band.
You're saying it's usually an outward snare? I would be very surprised if that was the case. Do you have a link to the source for that?
