Monetizing opportunities only work if you have a fanbase that isn’t abused and adversarial. So tying your compensation to that is a poison pill. Warcraft team listen and won back the fan so what. Overwatch 2 is consistent disappointing expectations.

companies seem to forget the upside of FOMO design is also a downside. if the game is good, people will fear missing out on rewards. but if the game is bad and they miss just one login bonus, weekly challenge, etc, then they are more likely to quit the game because they think they are behind now. this method of player retention is really only useful when you have a game that people care about.

There's also a second downside in the form of burnout. FOMO design is artificial retention - it makes people stick around for reasons other than that they are simply enjoying the game. That lack of enjoyment builds up, and eventually the players will realize they don't enjoy the game anymore. The odds of them coming back again after that are practically zero.

I really want to see the legal implications of that, because they gave 'free upgrades' for overwatch 1 players to overwatch 2. Making people pay to play Overwatch 1 again under a different name after changing it by force sounds like double dipping, and sets a pretty bad precedent, because what's to stop them from doing that again?

The OG leaders at Blizzard wanted everyone to get bonuses because if not, it incentivizes employees to take less creative risk, whereas Kotick stated that only the best performers should get rewarded because they delivered. I can understand Kotick's argument, but that type of thinking is what has led Blizzard to be a former shell of itself with zero innovation for quite some time. Financially it has worked, but it has cost a lot of reputational damage to the company. I guess it's a matter of how you view companies. For the sake of long-term longevity, I think it's a mistake to only focus on profits at the cost of reputation. Honestly that type of thinking might explain why most of their franchises have stagnated, I think the most obvious example is Call of Duty, just rinse and repeat the same game with new store and bundles every year so they can all get bonuses.

Do those 2 buy games and MTX no matter how bad they are.
Or that is actually millions of "gamers"?
Why do you people love so much to blame other people for doing their job?
Bobby is perfect CEO. He is milking braindead"gamers" for profit of his company.
      Everyone does that.
Gaben is taking 30% of game devs profits just for putting their game on his store. Why nobody hating him?
30% is a lot. He is doing same thing that bobby does.
      Making profit.
If "gamers" on OW2 release Without PVE would ALL JUST SAY - NOPE, NOT PLAYING IT. they would have their PVE mode in full promises in no more than 3-6 months.
But hey, they do opposite. No matter how bad they make OW2 , no matter how much MTX they add, no matter how much content they cut. "Gamers" still play it.

Bad comparison. Notice how Helldivers is a PvE focused game that made the decision to not EVER do PvP. By your logic, Overwatch, the PvP focused game, should do the same/inverse opposite relative to its situation and commit to not ever making PvE content. That would be both games leaning on their strengths and not bothering to fuss around with new secondary modes. If Blizzard was smart, they would have said out loud, like the Helldivers team, that the people begging for PvE are just simply not gonna ever get what they want and to just put that out of their minds already

    • @thesunthrone

@@cosmosofinfinityNo, stop. Blizzard hooked everyone into Overwatch with the character designs, the cinematics, the lore, the story. That's what really got people interested and try the game, myself included. That's what made it such a big deal in 2016. That's why it was everywhere back then. THAT IS WAS WHAT THEY PROMISED FOR OVERWATCH 2 BECAUSE OF IT AND WHY PEOPLE WERE EXCITED FOR IT!
The market for cooperative modes is far bigger than PvP, straight up. Starcraft 2 (RIP) had their co-op mode outrank the ladder modes because turns out people just want to chill with their friends, catch up about their daily lives while doing something together. Overwatch had gigantic potential to be massive with PvE and story. They pissed it all down the drain because Bobby wanted MGL2. That's it.

I made a bet with some friends, also random people on reddit and youtube comment sections... I think Overwatch will enter on "maintenance mode" until the end of 2024, early 2025 tops. "Maintenance" is pretty much the death sentence for a "game as a service", it happened to Halo Infinite recently (imagine that, if even a 20 years old mega franchise backed by Microsoft all these years, this franchise is not "safe", imagine Overwatch), the servers will be kept online, but there will be no more "content" in development, no more skins, new characters, maps, etc.. nope, just the game at it's current abominable state. Blizzard is keeping Heroes of the Storm on maintenance for a while now, I bet Overwatch is going to follow that same path if the current devs continue to be stubborn and incompetent.
5v5 is the key issue here, the game is chaotic and unbalanced, older players are abandoning the game en masse, newer players are not "loyal" enough to stay around, they will jump to the next "gass" trend at any minute. Marvel just promoted a Paladins clone that will clash directly with Overwatch. If this game is good, who in their right mind are chose to play as "Illari" if they can have similar fun with freaking Spider-Man? It's unfair really, lol if you look at the newest Overwatch character, a weird "zoomer" named " Venture" that looks horrendous, imagine the appeal of such character compared to Iron Man, Hulk, Loki and so on. Overwatch greatest strength in my pov was their character designs, this "sequel" was not able to keep up on this regard, not at all, only Ramattra and Junker Queen looks really good, but everyone else... yikes

Blizzard says PvE isn't dead! Just give us more money for PvE chapters! But, PvE fans were already gone, you see they didn't care anymore, game was uninstalled. The mixed messaging leads to whatever PvE mode Blizzard scrambled together to fail. I actually think this is a phenomenal change. No more watered down, waste of resources story crap. Without the actual PVE it was worthless anyway. We get all the characters again as they originally intended for Overwatch 1 and they got rid of lootboxes and even the fomo from the battle pass is so much better from the looks of it, earning currency and being able to get the skin you want. It's like the game has regressed back to Overwatch 1 with all the updates people expected for the game and that's a really good thing. I still prefer higher priced skins over randomized lootboxes. Now you spend $100 on the game, you get exactly what you want. No more little Timmy spending his entire Birthday/Christmas gift to get that Widowmaker skin only to get a bunch of other stuff and not end up with what he wanted oh and no more locked characters. I might actually play the game again.

Man, falling out of love is so depressing. The opposite of love isn't hate, the main difference between love and hate is what you'd do if left alone with them.
The opposite of love is apathy.
I was in the Overwatch beta, I had a massive gaming party with friends when it launched, I remember it being the thing I played and thought of constantly.
Each event that came out was super hype, each cinematic that dropped felt like the world was building up to be an incredible PvE universe, each new hero and map and gamemode release was massive. I really cared about that game and spent so much time in it.

It was a bitter, resentful experience to feel more and more frustrated with their management of the game and that even though I cared so much, my passion and investment into the world was not being reciprocated.
I can think of any part of any of the old maps and remember different experiences and challenges faced at each specific location.
I do miss playing it, but I miss enjoying it even more, and I don't think I can do that anymore.

      @ArchSchizo 6 місяців тому +2

@@advisorrook I might be even angrier. The alternate abilities could have made the game way less stale, and a PvE mode would easily be the best part of the game. Here's the thing, they absolutely wrecked MY interest in the story and characters. I was sold this optimistic tone with a whole mismatched toybox of action figures. Now, OW is obsessed with being taken seriously and having deep lore without actually writing anything new.
Some of the lore just made things even LESS interesting. I thought Mercy ruined Reaper. I thought Doomfist was going to be a supervillain instead of some random aimless thug. The whole robot invasion was kinda neat, so they had to ruin it too by making it the most tone-deaf allegory to real-life conflicts ever made. Ramattra was the sign that the game had nothing to offer in writing. 76 got a strangle-hold on what little narrative focus there was and made everything serious and bleak. All the dialogue is dunking on another hero, or trauma dumping, or quirky random nonsense. The villains have some of the most stock dialogue ever with all the "conflict is a good thing" and "morality is subjective" without any elaboration. The writing is easily the MOST wasted potential because they did a 180 and still can't. Every new hero has narrow gameplay because they would rather lean on "just switch lmao" than make any depth per-hero. 76 and Reaper can both flank OR frontline, 76 can even play at multiple ranges, so why do they keep making heroes that play themselves? Mauga is the worst so far, but Ramattra and Illari are both terrible in flexibility as well. And Echo, I guess, with all that "do damage" ability crap and linear combos.

Yet they still play it. Why?
There is only one way to let Kotick legacy die - stop playing bad games. But people can't stop.
If you want good games - stop playing bad games. Company will be forced into making better game TO KEEP GAMERS.
Right now, why would A BUISNESS care?
Those people generate enough revenue to keep it floating. They will never "waste" more resources on smth that GENERATES PROFIT only because "gamers are mad and talking bad things".
Gamers will never do anything but talk.
They will pre-order, they will buy MTX, they will play bad games just because.
Those people deserve everything. Because they exist i stopped playing wow 5 years ago. I stopped playing OW1. I never tried D4 after D3.
Because of this people i will never play wow again, we don't have good OW2, D4 is bad and there is no hope for D5.
Simple because there are people who will play bad games no matter what. They will pay for them. They will give so much money that the fact that majority of people wont be playing it - doesnt matter.
So i hope OW2 will get even worse. Maybe there is line where "gamers" will stop playing bad games. But somehow i doubt that.

As for the rest, just having some tie-ins from other franchises is simply not good enough.
The reason people got interested in OW was the world, the lore and the class based unique gameplay. These things are all related to roleplaying fantasy. I bet when they cut out bonuses for franchises that were not doing so well, they also didn't increase bonuses for those who did well. Meaning the company just gets more money and pays out less.

If you are a junior in any company, chances are you don’t get to pick your first team. This is why profit sharing company wide is far more fair and equal than by IP/project. How are you responsible for the decisions of the overall team?
What a horrible practice. Blizzard employees need to write their own book: How to demoralize and and abuse your employees through corporate “perceived” benefits programs.

giving people who paid for heroes free currency to get mythic skins would have cost Blizzard nothing. Whatever "lost sales" that would have resulted would have been more than offset by increasing player goodwill among paying gamers.

9:35 It probably made a good profit, but just not an amazing profit to where they're wanting to share with the actual workers. Leadership will still get raises and a bonus because they think they're special, and workers are expendable. They just needed to lead them on to fulfill leadership's vision, and when it comes up short it must be the worker's fault.

The degree to which I'm now repulsed by that typical modern "Blizzard look" , with any edge or humanity ripped out is kind of astonishing, even to myself.
I guess it should be less surprising, given how it's the result of a decade of conditioning
