I'm 74 and Italian. Grew up in the tenements of NYC in the 50's and early 60's. I remember this song and others of the era on hot summer nights. No ac. A small window fan. The smell of garbage wafting up from the street. Listening to this and other songs of the times. I remember block parties where Hector Lavoe and others jammed. Italians, blacks, Irish, Polish, Puerto Ricans etc all had a great time. We mostly all got along. Yes, there were gangs and fights but the most of the hard working people and the families got along. You know why? We were all poor. It's always been more about the color green of the dollar then skin color. IMHO it's worse today. Keep rockin and God bless.

Thank you for your story. I believe you - it's FAR worse today. Back then, even during the worst of times - at the time - simple pleasures were the best. I'm 65, raised in Cali - enjoyed the music of the 50s, 60s, 70s - of all flavors. Music was the BEST back then. Yep. I said what I said. :-) Blessings - and keep rockin!

@@newzcutter West side. 93rd street. A block from Riverside drive. The same street that has that little park with the Joan of Arc statue. It was a bad neighborhood when I lived there. It's all gentrified now and looks great. A real shithole when I was a kid. The ball fields look like Yankee stadium now. When I was a kid they were just dirt. We used too clean them up in the summer so we could play ball. Old tires, broken glass, junkie needles all over. Junkies would watch us play until they nodded off. LOL.

It was the same for me when I was young. No divisions among different ethnicities. We all got along and music brought us all closer together. What the hell happened to this world?? Politicians divide us to try to control us.

You have SERIOUSLY cool relatives! I just discovered this artist, Joe Cuba (and band), as well as the whole bogaloo genre today (somewhat obscure NPR show), and I'm stoked!! Salsa with an African influence - what's not to like??
So I'm taking salsa lessons... (Level 1, and level 1 again, haha. It's hard! (Who knew? Not me...)), and now I know what I'll be practicing to at home (should that happen :))!

Oh my god. I am so honored to "meet" you. I lived in Williamsburg, Bklyn. One the three LPs that got me into latin music was your dad's "Coming At You". To this day I listen to it. Reminds me of my sister teaching me to dance what was back then "Latin Music" which years later became Salsa. It the was Joe Cuba Band and Cal Tjader that got me to love Vibes. Then lo and behold Bang Bang came out. I was 14. Damm you could not go anywhere without hearing El Pito or more so Bang Bang. I got into "salsa" with Comin At You but came of age with Bang Bang. And then came My Man Speedy LP. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You to your father and godfather. I purchased a Yamaha vibes and every day I bang away to El Raton and Bang Band and Quisiera Yo Tener. I am so honored to have met you.

You know those old songs your parents would tell you about when you were a kid, and you'd look at them like they'd lost their minds? This was one of my mom's favorites...Now that she's gone, a lot of this stuff comes back to mind, and I find it right here on YT. Miss you, Ma, and now I'm digging all this stuff. And R.I.P. and thank you, Joe Cuba...I hope you and your bandmates realized how much this music meant to people across all ages and races...

As a teenager growing up in NYC, I can remember walking my white ass through Spanish Harlem in the mid - 60's on the way to Randall's Island. If this song wasn't streaming out of the open windows and crowded basements, it was rising up from the very streets smokey with sweat, tobacco and exotic spices of the caribbean. Everything was alive, everybody was on the streets, all life was poor but happening, all hail Hispanic joy in the rhythmic eternal amen!. Thank you Joe Cuba

The Joe Cuba Sextet, was probably the best group of the 60's. Why? The combination of Nick Jimenez's arrangements, Jimmy sabater's Lyrics and singing, Cheos's singing and presence molded the group into a powerhouse. Joe Cuba was a shrewd bandleader. Vibes player Tommy Berrios was preety good, and Slim Cordero's Bass was Booming. Long live Joe Cuba

my father moved upstairs in my two family flat at age 79 after splitting up from my Mom. His father was from Poland, a real Polish farmer, and my Dad spoke Polish fluently. While he was living upstairs he would listen to Spanish radio stations and blast this song when it came on. He lived with me about a year and half before moving into a nursing home. I have to laugh every time I hear this. My dad the Pollack cranking up the Cuban music! WTH?

Survivor2002: I must be in your mother's age bracket. This song came out in 1966, I was14 years old. We were doing a dance called the PHILLY DOG. I grew up in WATTS in the NICKERSON GARDENS PROJECT, and ain't ashamed to admit it. Those were the days of, I really can't explain it here it would take much too long; and this is long enough. But this song came out at a time during immense social unrest, and brought a sort of ease to our community. But my grandchildren & a couple of my children look at me like you mentioned. This was one of my favorites also. Along with PATA PATA by Miriam Makeba; which is also on YT, I just finished listening to it as well as "GRAZING IN THE GRASS" by HUGH MASEKALA, I hope I spelled that right. These ALL came out that same year. All I can say now is: GROOVY, MAN, GROOVY!!! AND READ AND MEDITATE ON YOUR BIBLE AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN. JOHN 17:3.

YES!!! Those were the days. The Black Panthers were calming down about '67. But there were no gangs like we see today. This is all a part of Bible prophecy: 1Timothy 3:1-5& Jesus's prophecy at Matthew 7:1-47. Very few people are aware that they are living in the last days of mankind's rule over man. The "OUR FATHER" is a request for God's Government to take control of the affairs of our planet home, and make it the paradise that He intended it to be originally. We have only a glimpse of it in the WORDS of ISAIAH 65. Take a READ. And pray that you are there. Acts 24:15. May Jehovah's peace be with you today and ALWAYS!!!

The NEW WORLD government IS nearer than most people even care to know about. They prefer to have things AS they are, BUT when the reality comes to fore they'll have NO choice but to accept IT. EZEKIEL 38:23 "AND THEY WILL HAVE TO KNOW THAT I AM JEHOVAH."

1968 was a banner year for latin music in New York City. Of course there was Tito Puente (the King) but there was also Ricardo Ray, Joe Quijano, Eddie Palmieri,
Ray Barretto, Johnny Colon, Hector Rivera and the man whose song (Bang, Bang) was guaranteed to get people moving on the dance floor Joe Cuba who gave us other classics like Oh Yeah, El Pito (I'll Never Go Back To Georgia) and To Be With You. Joe Cuba will be missed. R.I.P.

Yes, yes! Had to 1970...Bee beep! I was in JHS, Lower East Side and it was hot, the roof top was ours to chill, cool, sleep if you wanted to on the ledge to connecting roof. After a certain hour, we had to, well the older young, went to the fire escape or from their roof top would play in distance from where they lived; sometimes the Williamsburg Bridge or Willet Street Park. I can sometimes feel it when listening.
