Perhaps if the cruise company's paid their staff a better wage in the first place, this sort of problem would not become an issue. Some cruise company's even skim off a cut from the so called gratuities that is deducted for the crew. Standards have dropped and that started when gratuities became a semi mandatory automatic payment. (Life long cruiser).⚓

There have been increasing daily gratuities so I asked some of the people working on the ship if they are enjoying their raises.
They had not seen any increase.
So where are the extra money we are paying.
The owners seem to be padding their pockets 🤔

Back in the old days there was only two things that were certain, death and taxes. Now it's death, taxes, tips, mandates, you-tube algorithm, woke-ism, cancel culture, etc. This new world order sucks xxx !

I totally feel you. From the good old simple days of 'death and taxes,' now we've got a list that's longer than a cruise ship's itinerary! 🚢📃 I sometimes miss the simplicity of the past, too. ⏳ On the flip side, change brings progress. 😇 The UA-cam algorithm, for instance, has opened up opportunities for creators around the world to share their passions and connect with others! 🌐🎥 And while 'wokeism' and 'cancel culture' certainly have their critics, they've also started important conversations about fairness and respect. 🙌🗣️
When it comes to Princess Cruises, it's a similar story. Yes, some changes may feel like they're adding to the list of 'certainties,' but they're also trying to provide more personalized, quality services to enhance our cruise experiences. 🛳️💖 But hey, that's just one perspective. 🤷‍♀️ It's always great to have these conversations and see all different views! 🔄 After all, it's our world, and everyone's opinion matters. 🌎✨ What do you think? 💭

on royal caibbean, if you dont pre-pay them when you make your booking they will still add them when you board the ship. we just tell (not ASK, but TELL) guest services to remove them completely. You shouldnt have to pay them at all.

We don't pay them in Australia it's included in our price from the start.. We don't have tips in Australia but we always give the room money at the end anyway.

I don’t tip unless you are going out of your way to help me. Otherwise you are just doing your job! I don’t wanna hear a sad story about you don’t make enough money. If that’s the case then go find a better job that pays better. I work in the public industry and I don’t expect a tip for doing what I have to do to make my customers happy. If I get a tip out of that then great. But if I don’t then great as well. It doesn’t change my job description and what I have to do

My understanding of cruise gratuities is they mostly offset corporate expenses.
Example, a cruise worker gets a salary of $200 per month and a guarantee of $800 per month. If the cruise worker gets no tips, the cruise line pays the difference of $600 to get the worker to $800. If the worker gets $600 in tips, the worker still gets $800 and the cruise line makes an additional $600 in profit. Obviously, the mandatory gratuities go into a bucket and come out of the bucket for the whole gratuity eligible staff. I imagine the cruise lines have this down to a science.

You've made a really insightful observation about how cruise gratuities work. It's indeed interesting how these systems are structured, and it's always good to be informed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

It's deception and many travel agencies, especially online bookings, fail to disclose these charges until the client pays for the cruise. By that time there are non refundable deposits. A better approach is to add service charges on other items. Or have the carriers offer 10-20% discounts if prepared ahead of time, similar to wifi. If you're looking at an 18 day cruise, these tips can be as much as 25% increase to your current costs.

Tips are only for restaurant servers that's it everyone else gets paid a wage from the cruise ship company.

You say we are stifffing them behind the scenes. THAT'S NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY!
    it's the cruise companies responsibility!
Tips were for servers back in the early 1800's that were not paid a wage.
Now days cops give you a speeding ticket for 5 over and they want a TIP!
    it's become REDICULOUS!

I tip on top of the daily fee to
My cabin Stewart waitstaff . People work hard, I usually give this extra at the beginning of the cruise. I don’t mind tbe daily fee.

The cruise lines are masters of psychological manipulation to better their bottom line. This also includes using customers to subsidize staff costs on the back end instead of the front end.
They pool the gratuity fees to provide a target compensation range and they know the percentage of people who will take those fees off over large numbers of travelers and they have this all factored in potentially from the day you book.
If you tip the crew directly you put more money in their pockets but you also impact how much other travelers pay.
So it’s not how much you care about the crew but how much you care about your fellow traveler subsidizing your vacation.

If they want to take my money whenever they want then it's NOT A TIP it's robbery with a smile
They should add all this to the price. So we will just decide whether or not to take the ride on the pirate ship!

i have been on 88 cruises around the world in the early days you tipped them or who worked for you the best on the ship - dining room or sleeping space. i have in the last 5 years removed almost 1/2 of the fee off my tab during the mid week and then use the cash method working. i think the tip this present day is way too much - they are forcing a price to you and you as the cruiser do not really know where that is going. i think 12 bucks per person per day is standard but the last cruise last month was close to 14 bucks a person per cabin thats too high.

I'll try removing the gratuities as well. Why should couple have to pay twice? $32 dollars a day is a racket. A full suite room might cost double the price of a balcony to book, yet the gratuity calculated in only $2 more? The tips are disproportionately penalising the inside cabin and balcony units. It should be weighted far greater on the highest suite rooms. Far from far and equitable.

Bullshit, this is propaganda from the cruise lines
