  • I just received the new Nikon (Nikkor) DX 12-28mm PZ with built in VR.
    Many may be comparing to the Viltrox 13mm F1.4 or wondering if they need both.
    I have therefore not only reviewed the new Nikon lens but compared it to the Viltrox.
    I think both are fantastic lenses for different use cases. In my view if you have a Nikon ZFC, Z30, or Z50 both lenses are seriously warranting consideration.
    What do you think? Please let us know your thoughts below! I reply to all comments. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for your review and thoughts. My uses are exclusively still photography with my Z50 (my everyday-carry camera). So details like edge sharpness are of higher importance than what a videographer may prioritize. I recently bought but returned the Viltrox 13mm. I thought it was quite sharp throughout, but the lack of VR was an issue for the sort of casual hand-held travel and landscape i want it for. So, I'm planning on getting the Nikon.

      Thanks for your comment Craig. I think they are different use cases, certainly for video. My Viltrox is mainly my on a tripod lens for my UA-cam as I like the shallow DOF and the wide angle suits indoor filming, in the car, on the product close up etc.
      I’ve just actually ordered the new Nikkor 24mm F1.7 as well (review coming when I get it) which I’ve bought for taking the camera out on a night etc mainly for photos as that also does not have VR.
      The Viltrox I have got some lovely photos on though. I haven’t found the lack of VR an issue for Viltrox photos given how fast it is.
      Really though we need a Nikon DX with IBIS, if that comes out I’ll buy it straight away (maybe rumoured Z70?)

      @@wakeywarrior Yes, agree, if Nikon gives us the rumored Z70/90 with IBIS i too will be buying it straight away. I’ll watch for your test of the 24mm 1.7 when you are ready to share your thoughts. Best regards, Craig

    Exactly the video I was looking for, surprised there aren't any others. I would suggest Nikon one for general purpose if you want to buy only one of the two.

    I have ordered the 12-28mm zoom but not yet received it so I was interested in your comparison. I am quite happy with non VR lenses for stills and seem to have managed quite well handheld without stabilisation over most of the last 50 or more years but there is no doubt it improves the hit rate even with the best technique. Video is another matter and its quite clear that the VR is making a difference in a very meaningful way, I suspect you will be leaving the Viltrox at home and taking the Nikon when you head out for any adventures. I spend a lot of time out in the hills here in NZ and do quite a bit of travelling and so light weight and versatility are critical for me. I have the Z50 and the 16-50 and 50-250 VR kit lenses and I am still amazed by the quality of the images and video and so far they seem to be standing up well to robust use. Looking forward to seeing how well the 12-28 performs when it arrives.

      Hi John. Thanks for watching and your detailed comment. Yes, the VR does make a big difference on video. In reality I do very little walking with the camera, but it’s handheld pointing at something, maybe a pan etc. in these circumstances the VR makes a huge difference. The water tower video is a good example, it’s rock solid. I’ve been doing some more research when to use Sport. Apparently that’s actually weaker VR, better for panning shots as the standard VR tries to keep it too still and has to jump to catch up. So I think the best settings may be Sport if you are panning and moving the camera about, standard for rock steady shots concentrating on one subject.
      Yes the Viltrox is staying home now, and will be extensively used on my at home UA-cam videos as I can’t find anything to beat that with the shallow depth of field for that wide use case.
      I have now also invested in the brand new 24mm F1.7. This isn’t as wide as the Viltrox but it’s very small. No VR unfortunately which is a shame, but it will be fine for what I’ve bought it for which is putting on the camera either when I’m just going shooting photos, or on a night, say on holiday, when I want it as small as possible to go in the pocket, but with great low light capability. Will just have to do some post stabilisation if it’s too wobbly on video. Check back, I’ll be putting a video up on that lens shortly,

    I've got the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 Bought it figuring that the 12-28PZ wouldn't be released for 6 months and boom! Released when I received the 13mm! I've shot it on a Nikon Z30 at a scale model contest, on a gimbal, and while its amazing on a tripod, I couldn't believe the amount of jello shots when I reviewed footage when I got home. I'll keep it for tripod work, but I think the 12-28 will be a near future purchase.

    • @wakeywarrior
      @wakeywarrior  Рік тому +1

      Yeah the Viltrox is a great lens but best for a certain use case- tripod, held stead, gimbal, close up shots, slow mo is fine on it at 120fps slowed to 25%.
      The 12-28 is a different use case, and certainly there’s room in my camera bag for both.
      I have filmed a video review of just the Viltrox, I’ll have to get it up, it JUST works on my Crane mini gimbal despite the weight, the 12-28 I haven’t tried on the gimbal yet but there will be no issue given the lower weight.

    Great video comparison. Which lens do you reckon I should get if I already have the 16-50mm kit lens, and doing both Vlogs and Podcasts? Only have budget for 1 and can't decide between these 2, both seems like awesome lenses. Many thanks for any thoughts!

    • @wakeywarrior

      They are both really good lenses, but with different use cases. I ended up using the Viltrox more for UA-cam at home and on tripod UA-cam stuff and the Nikon for out and about work. You can’t go wrong with either. The Nikon for a Nikon lens with VR and that sharpness is brilliant value.

    • @harrylee7609
      @harrylee7609 6 місяців тому

      @@wakeywarrior that’s very true. So would you recommend the Viltrox 13mm over the Nikon 12-28mm for the purposes of filming still/ talking head/ Podcast-style videos?
      Only because I have the 16-50mm kit lens already and I thought that one can be used for handheld videos instead.

    • @wakeywarrior
      @wakeywarrior  6 місяців тому +1

      @@harrylee7609 I tended to use the Viltrox for that. See my barbecue videos for example. The more blurry background on that lens I liked and faster shutter speed indoors. Buy that and save up and get the PZ they are both worth having in the collection.

      @wakeywarrior Thank you, I have a Nikon DX 12-28 and I am struggling to find a Variable ND that does not introduce black shades in the corner in the range 12-20mm . I tried an old NISI and a K&F concept x-nano and I did not get acceptable results in that focal range

      @@MaverickMahesh I checked I think it is the autofocus, but it is a Very slight noise, the inbuilt mic on the Z30 (the best inbuilt mic on any camera even higher gain than the Sony ZV E1 I think) picks it up in very very quiet environments. You literally have to put your ear next to the lens to hear it. I have never noticed it and I’ve had the lens for 6 months so I wouldn’t worry, it won’t usually be picked up. I also increased the volume on that clip which maybe also made it easier to hear.
      What do you think of the new Nikon lens? I think it is very good.
