- OK Guys, the NHL's free agent frenzy is tomorrow, and one question remains.. Will the Montreal Canadiens make some noise during free agency this year? My guess is no.. My hope is no, I don't think they should necessarily be in the race for a big name player yet.. However.. I do expect them to be "linked" to many players, as big Canadian Markets usually do.. Let's chat about it.

Gonna miss Honda civic he was a good guy to have as a 7 th defenseman , or in case of injuries
he's a really good bottom pairing guy, he deserve a full time spot in a competitive team like NJ

I think it was a premature move, would have liked to see how training camp and the first few months of the Season goes before shipping him off as he's honestly very consistent for a bottom pairing defender. would have gotten a 4th for him all day at the deadline anyway IMO.

Kovacevic for a 4th is actually a good deal on both sides. Kovacevic is a UFA after next season, he'll be looking to showcase his skills and there was no room to do this in Montreal - New Jersey is perfect for him to shine and maybe earn a decent payday. On the other hand, on a cluttered blueline, Montreal got an asset instead of losing Kovacevic for nothing next year. Win-win as far as I'm concerned.
We also grabbed him from waivers. So it was all positive from me.

Good don't want him messing up any of the young talent coming up.
Next season is the time to try to push for the playoffs, but that's all. Just seeing what the team can do and cutting the crap contracts is all that really should be done with the trades. Alternatively, maybe doing something like taking on some short term crap contracts for draft capital could be an option as well just to make use of the cap space while it's available.
So a team that finishes bottom 5 should all of a sudden push for a playoff spot ? What are you smoking ? We still don't have a reliable goal scorer, we still don't have a reliable goalie, our blue line still get the kid's prices wherever they go. We have an okay 4th line and an okay like 5th and 6th Dman, you think that's worth pushing for the playoff ?
We're still YEARS away from pushing for the playoff consistently and that's including Demidov, if he flops as reliable goal scorer and if Dach gets another big injury we could be nearly a decade from where you want this team to be. The only top 6 we have that we can count on right at this moment is Suzuki, he's the only one who's consistent in his performance, i love the guy but he isn't Connor McDavid, he isnt carrying the whole team to the the playoff by himself.
Just sit tight, this is the year we start making progress out of the cellar while all the players we have acquired over the past 3 seasons start making big strides in their progress. We will be at the draft next year with a pick in the 10-15 range and the year after that is when we start to push for a consistent playoff spot.
Remember we have Calgary's First pick in 2025 as well if they wanna shit the bed again that's good for us I also think that if we don't add any scoring to this group we have still don't have a shot we need to score at least 3 a game and that doesn't happen often and we need to drop out goals against to three can't have 4 goals against .I know MTL had the most one goal games if they can come out on top of those games maybe that's the difference between wild card and missing the play offs

I liked Hondacivic, but I understand the situation.
Kovacevic was solid, a 4th is pretty underwhelming to me. He added much needed size and grit to the back end. He wasn't flashy but he was solid defensively. I think he was also Xhekaj's friend from Hamilton.
But c'est la vie, let the culling begin!

I think the hockey gods have cursed Corey Perry since the 2020 Winter Classic due to that hit on Ellis and the Stars ending up being bad hosts by winning that game. Noticed a trend in host teams winning a Winter Classic and they get cursed in the playoffs that year. Though, it might be safe currently for the Habs to pick up Perry if they no immediate plans for any possible playoff run.

@@edwinperry152 Justin Barron is 5 years younger and actually has upside. Kovacevic is a bottom pairing D who already hit his ceiling. See the difference? We have too many defenseman taking time away from the young ones and Kova is the first to be cut.
Gotta agree. No need for any major FA's unless management does it specifically for veteran leadership. Let this team cook, suck one more season, get a #1 center (2025 draft is center heavy) and the rebuild is ready to cook off.

Couldn't be more on board with staying away from the UFAs. And avoiding a Ottawa situation.
I want to see what we have now gel as a team without distractions for as long as possible. I want to see room for young guys to step up and show what they can do and grow. I realize it takes veteran leaders to help the kids grow and learn. But I really do feel we have enough of that, apart from maybe 1 or 2 specialty players.

should go for brannstrom. sure his defence game is almost inexistant but with our rd's stay at home in reinbacher, logan mailloux and trade matheson for a home run and finally put guhle where he is the most comfortable. Our defence can look like this. Guhle-Reinbacher , Hutson-Xhekaj , Brannstrom- Mailloux. look enticing!

Did u hear that dude when the draft started, he was a San Jose fan, and when they said San Jose to make their 1st round selection, dude was Rick Flairing out there like it was his last night alive!!! We have a mountain full of dmen on the left side. Why is Hughes trading away guys from the right side? I find this a bit questionable. Not the value of the return for Honda Civic but why trade him away in the first place? We need right shot defensemen.

Too many bad contracts…Gally, Anderson, Dvorak( unless hughesy can cook and get rid of them without giving up valuable assets) and give young guys ice time. Buyout gally after this year, trade Anderson to Calgary/etc after this year with a pick, Dvorak rolls off, trade armia at trade deadline this year, and no more retention after this year! 2025 is the year to strike. Patience.

Should have kept Kovacevic and traded Harris. Can never have enough RHD. Would love to see Montreal bring back Toffoli. He can fit in middle six, strong offensively and defensively, can play the pp and PK. Would be a great mentor for the younger guys.
