    Dang im itching for this season to start. As a goalie im not even excited to watch ullmark play. I'm excited to hear about the way the Defense and coaches talk about how Ullmark used his experience to influence how the team could play around him. Im really hoping he has a major voice they listen to

    This is exactly why we need a 6th dman. Can’t hand JBD and Kleven NHL roles first day of camp. I think kleven will be a lock, but JBD should be fighting someone for that spot, and it can’t be Hamonic.

  • @adamtaylor31
    @adamtaylor31 25 днів тому +1

    I still think they will be adding a new D man and a forward from the FA list. That will upgrade the depth chart against almost certain injuries.

    I’m in the camp that they are going to add one more veteran RD in the 3rd slot.
    You simply CANNOT go into this season with both JBD and Hamonic as options.

    • @KgH72
      @KgH72 25 днів тому

      Probably not before the hammer leaves or retires. Odds are that’s “his spot to lose” but just got a feeling he’s gonna be that #6 D rather than being the #7. Do I like it? hell no lol

      We can only pray this happens. Staios sounded confident in running Kleven, but he didn’t necessarily say he was comfortable with JBD and Hamonic. Not that he’d tell media what his plans are anyways.
      But yeah. I desperately want a vet D for that bottom pairing. And I really want a vet forward for the fourth line as well. I’m not happy at all with a fourth line of Gregor, MacEwen, and say Highmore, or Crooker.

    Having defencemen that can actually defend would be nice,,afterwards if they can help out offensively then that’s a bonus. It’s too bad that having big physical and defensively solid defenceman that play a key role on any championship team seems seriously under appreciated.

    • @jobemi2422
      @jobemi2422 25 днів тому

      The problem is the Sens are nowhere near competing for a championship, so worrying about “playoff style” is thinking way too far ahead. Sens need to make the playoffs first and then figure out what areas they are lacking in.
      Plus plenty of people assume big and physical = good defensively. Like EDM let Desharnais walk (for good reason since he got 2M) and replaced him with Josh Brown. Desharnais is actually solid defensively while Brown is one of the few Dmen I’d argue is worse than Hamonic in the NHL. Just because they are built the same doesn’t mean they’re similar players.

  • @DizzyDez613
    @DizzyDez613 25 днів тому

    So, if I was the coach on opening night, and assuming everyone is healthy (*cough* Norris *cough cough*), this would be my line up:
    Tkachuk Stützle Giroux
    Perron Norris Batherson
    Greig Pinto Amadio
    **See note at bottom for fourth line**
    Sanderson Zub
    Chabot Jensen
    Kleven JBD
    Ullmark
    Forsberg
    Ok. So for the fourth line, I’d have Gregor on the left wing, and then any combination of the following players to fill out the rest: MacEwen, Crookshank, Ostapchuk, Gaudette, Highmore, Järventie. Basically whichever two have the best camps and pre-seasons.
    I still badly want a vet D man for the bottom pairing, and another vet for the 4th line. But I’m not sure Staios is gonna do that.

      Fascinating, hadn’t thought of this. I’m a JBD fan, but not sure if I want Sanderson with him in the event it messes up Sanderson for the first bit of the season. We’ve also seen Chabot and Zub before and it didn’t work out too well then. Idk, maybe it works out better this time under Green

    Top 4 defensemen are totally set in stone to me because our current bottom pair of Kleven-JBD is a real problem. I think our RD depth is actually ok as I can honestly see Matinpalo or Guenette getting some reps this year. But I think we should look at getting a ~$2MM LD to shore up the bottom pair. Kleven will have opportunities to play with injuries, and there's basically no one else capable of callups. Ideally a bottom pair guy that can play both sides but is a big veteran, unlike Branny

  • @swammer13
    @swammer13 25 днів тому

    Kylington makes sense because he can play both sides. I'm still thinking they need a right shot though as I don't think either JBD or Hamonic should be in your top 6. If Schultz remains unsigned and you can get him on a "prove you've still got it" deal at like 1.5M that would be my top choice, even if it means you end up losing JBD on waivers. In keeping with Staios' theme Schultz is another winner who could be a good mentor for Kleven and offers more ability to jump into the top 4 on the right than either JBD or Hamonic.
    I also think there's a decent shot that Matinpalo overtakes JBD on the depth chart.

    That's a pretty weak defense going into next season. At least last year there was competition on the left side. The right side is slightly better this year. Overall, I think it's a step backwards from last year, including goal production from the D. Look what Washington did. They add Chychrun and his 14 goals and 41 points with Matt Roy (FA) and his 5 goals and 25 points. All it cost them was Jensen and his 1 goal and 14 points to Ottawa. I get that it's tough to get players to come to Canada now because of Trudeaus Taxes/inflation but this trade is very frustrating.

  • @jobemi2422
    @jobemi2422 25 днів тому

    Really don’t get the argument that the Sens couldn’t keep Brännström at 2M. Especially after dumping Joseph.
    Using CapWager (RIP CapFriendly) the Sens currently have just over 3.13M in cap space with a 21 man roster (Gregor-Gaudette-MacEwan 4th line, Hamonic 7th D).
    If they just kept Branny at the 2M offer then they’d be a 1.13M and a 22 man roster. That’s still enough to sign a cheap 4th line option if they’d like, or just keep that cap space open. Hell, they probably coulda got him a bit cheaper if they gave him an extra year of term (ex 2years x 1.5M AAV). If they actually bought out Hamonic that would’ve given them an extra 700K or so in space, and then JBD would be the 7th.
    Pillzy brought it up, but if an injury happens in the top4 the Sens could be in serious trouble. That means either Kleven is moved up (an unproven rookie), or both JBD/Hamonic are now in the lineup and one is playing in the top4 (not great). Branny provided that security blanket for the Sens since he can play both sides on D, has posted solid top4 results over the past few years, and is able to run one of the PP units.
    Also not enough people are talking about how Jensen could easily continue to decline. He was a good 2nd pair defensive option for several years, but he’s coming off a bad year and is 34. There’s a legit chance he’s a 3rd pair Dman before next year is over. If the Sens just kept Brännström then they wouldn’t have to be banking on an older player bouncing back since he could’ve jumped up to take his minutes at 5v5.
    Kleven may also not be ready for fulltime minutes next year. Banking on him being as effective in a 3rd pair role as Brännström is a tall order. Branny was a much more highly touted prospect coming up and it still took him a few years to figure it out. If Kleven struggles then the next best option at LD is Roos or Davies…
    Just don’t get the narrative that Brännström didn’t establish himself in Ottawa and it was time to move on. In a 3rd pair role (where he would’ve been playing most of the year, and what the Sens are looking for now) he was great. Solid defensively, good in transition, put up respectable offensive numbers (similar 5v5 point totals as Sanderson over the past 2years), and being able to play either side. And when he got a chance to play in the top4 his results were usually pretty strong (w/ Chabot and Zub mostly).
    Just seems like the Sens are banking on a best case scenario to happen (Chabot being healthy, Jensen bouncing back, AND Kleven being ready), and have no backup plans if any of those things happen. Especially when the backup plan, as of now, is Hamonic being the 7th D.

    • @swammer13
      @swammer13 25 днів тому

      I think the danger was in Brannstrom's ability to file for arbitration. If he signed for 2M that would have been one thing, but if had filed for arbitartion he probably would have pointed to Timothy Liljegren's 3M contract as the comparable (similar career numbers and similar in that they are puck movers that can skate, don't put up a tonne of points, but have decent underyling defensive metrics). I don't think SS could risk him filing for arbitration and being tied to a higher arbitartion award.
      I know that he ended up signing for 900 k, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have been awarded more in arbitration. It also means that all 31 other teams didn't think he was worth 2M so maybe Staios isn't wrong here.

    • @jobemi2422
      @jobemi2422 25 днів тому

      @@swammer13 arbitration is a fair point, but it’s a 2way street. There’s a chance that the arbiter agrees more so with the team and feels he’s not worth a significant raise. I get not wanting to not take that risk, but that falls on the GM/management to work on a deal before hand and avoid it.
      As for him getting only 900K or whatever we don’t know what other offers he got. Maybe a team like San Jose or Chicago was willing to give him more AAV and/or term to go there. But seems like a smart choice to go to a legit contender for cheap, show what you can do on a bigger stage (compared to Ottawa), and have a good chance at stealing minutes from Girard (similar style player who always seems to be on the outs with the Avs).
      I’ll be the first to eat crow if Branny struggles in Colorado and becomes just a tweener. But I feel like Sens fans are already preparing the argument of “they couldn’t afford him” or “he wouldn’t/didn’t perform like that here” for when he pops off.
