Let's fire up the creative mind.
After his second defeat at the hands of Master Chief, the Diadact awoke in a hellish landscape. His abilities and strength allowed him to easily survive the harsh environment and it's inhabitants. Eventually he found an oddity in the land, the half buried form of a Black Pyramid that the native life forms stayed far away from...
Breaking into the pyramid tested even his abilities, but what he had found in its core would change him forever. A dark artifact linked to his mind as glimpses of another universe flashed before him.
    The diadact could only make out one word from this vision, *S A L V A T I O N.*

"Creatures appear around him, some with wings, others with something writhing around in them, and four others with power's that are both cold and connecting. Power's that he cannot rend to his will if he is destroyed by them first. His power does nothing more but slow them down, but that is all he needs to escape to fight another day. He will return, and when he does, it will be with those that kneel under his banner, maybe with beasts of fire and brimstone, he can conquer this strange ship, and fly it to where no other has gone, not even his precursor's."

As he swatted away at the malformed, heartless, soulless cyborg monsters he encountered - wretched things that would've given the Flood worthy company or competition, things that should never make contact with eachother nevertheless - he became aware of the strange energy they relied on.
It was a combination of something esoteric, and Composed essence data. 'Argent', according to his armour's scans.
      Usable.
He let it in - and in turn it gave him dominion of the flames around him. Within a day's journey from his present location, he saw a shadow. Oddly familiar.
He approached it, and as he did, he felt it... beckon him.
Like an old friend welcoming him back from a battle well won.
As he got closer, his senses sharpened, and... it was honest, if anything. The geometry and layout of the Black Pyramid was unnervingly familiar to the Promethean Supreme Commander, harkening to the style preferences of his oldest enemy besides the Flood and Humanity: Faber. The Master Builder.
That same voice now took a different turn, fractalizing into billions of voices speaking in perfect unity. They offered the ship on the condition that he fathom the paracausal.
His time in The Domain before it's destruction came in handy, alongside old memories now surfacing. He focused on himself, asserting control over this nulling chill that had come over him.
...And he beheld a great blade, shaped from a glacier, fit for his hands.
He dismissed it as easily as it had come to him and moved on.
As he wandered the halls, he would be often challenged by shadowy emulations of his history. Allies. Enemies. It didn't matter. He had an idea of what to do.
He refused to let the will behind this vessel sway him. He leveraged his armour's utilities, seeking a way to connect to the ship. His telepathy, or whatever equated to it, made the matter easier.
Though the billions of voices now urging him to stop was not helping. He muted the lot of them, and could still hear their muffled complaints for a few moments before finding the source of their connection, and crushing the... orb. For lack of better description.
In short order, he remodelled the ship's innards to resemble the Mantle's Approach, and depict his wife, in lieu of the unnerving, veiled figure.
      It soothed him.
Then he began harvesting the demons, using the ship as a proverbial lawnmower, intending to make a Composer out of the matter to start gathering Essences, if any even existed.
      It took him days.
By the time he had tested it, he found nothing. Apparently the Essences are segregated before the body is repurposed.
...No Knights or Ancillas, for now.
At least he'll have Armigers and matter to conscript for combat platforms.
Years would be lost to this quiet crusade.
This world was flat and spanned forever. That much Shadow-of-Sundered-Star felt was certain, though he also questioned whether this was boredom.
He did come across a dilapidated facility involved with parsing Essences from forms, and compromised it by Composing the Essences.
It was odd to him that these newly dead felt like they were saved by some 'angel'. So he had them installed as a new cadre of Knights, with the 'holy mission' of 'righteous vengeance' upon the demons.
Small teams of them would go and rip and tear the soulless things with a vigor rarely expressed. Some would disrupt the unholy machinations of these demons.
Inevitably, he would find a lone warrior of human relation in the field, clad in a variety of greens and other hues, entitled 'DOOM Slayer' by the demons, he would welcome this warrior aboard, if only to work with him to find a way out.
The Slayer saw what the Didact was doing, and while he wasn't impressed with the method, the results and where they were being applied had balanced his opinion out. For now.
With the knowledge this warrior's strange Ancilla had lent to him, the Didact was now able to use this ship to drift across the multiverse.
So he tried to go home once he picked up his Prometheans.
Instead, they arrived at Erde'tyrene - Earth - to find a strange floating orb above a massive city, and a fleet of similar Pyramids in various states of being - from fully operational to ribboned pieces to being derelict, with one clearly defiled by a strange metallic plant and hints of raw energy having been exchanged from both sides.
The Slayer was confused as much as the Forerunner-Promethean was, but inevitably he had came to a conclusion before the Didact did, and shared some intel from the Earth year of 2024.
They had arrived in Destiny, at the tail-end of The Final Shape.
...The Didact had no intent of staying, but was also interested in trying to co-opt any accessible ships, if only to bring more examples of this 'Black Fleet' back home to study.
