  • Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp joins CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin to discuss the company's contract with ICE, how he thinks about the Apple privacy debate, and its plan to IPO.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp said he stands by his company’s controversial work for the U.S. government, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The secretive Peter Thiel-backed data analytics start-up ramped up its work for governments in 2019, Karp said Thursday.
″The core mission of our company always was to make the West, especially America, the strongest in the world, the strongest it’s ever been, for the sake of global peace and prosperity, and we feel like this year we really showed what that would mean,” Karp said in an interview with “Squawk Box” co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Palantir has reportedly grown its inventory of government contracts to more than $1.5 billion in value by beating out more traditional defense contractors like Raytheon. Last March, Palantir won an $800 million contract to build an intelligence system to aid soldiers in remote environments. Since 2014, Palantir has worked with ICE to identify undocumented immigrants, prompting some employee protests.
“We started this contract under Obama, and obviously there’s a lot of legitimate concern about what happens on our border, how it happens, and what does the enforcement look like?” Karp told CNBC. “It’s a legitimate, complex issue. My personal position is we acknowledge the complexity. The people protesting, whom I respect, should also acknowledge that complexity.”
The company now has a private valuation of more than $20 billion and is reportedly considering an IPO next year.
Palantir is a Silicon Valley paradox: Seen as innovative and forward-thinking like its California counterparts but clandestine and hawkish like its D.C. competitors. While employees for Google, Apple and Amazon have loudly protested to their companies’ involvement in government work with private data, Palantir’s CEO has embraced the role of big tech companies in Washington.
“My house has been protested for many months, almost every day,” Karp said. “Our offices have been protested. Many Palantirians, who do not just follow what I say but are critical people, protested against it internally. Some people were so upset by it that they left. These are very hard decisions. I respect the people that that have decided they can’t be involved in this, but we have a position.”
Last month, Business Insider reported that Palantir is working on Project Maven, the Department of Defense program that Google dropped in March following employee backlash.
“If this were true, I’d be very proud,” Karp said about the reports, but didn’t confirm Palantir was working on the project.
Palantir’s work for the government has drawn the ire of some in Silicon Valley, especially as competitors like Google have turned down government contracts. Employees at Microsoft have protested over the company’s $480 million HoloLens contract with the Army. Karp, however, defends his company’s public-private relationship.
“It’s commonly known that our software is used in an operational context at war,” Karp said. “Do you really think a war fighter is going to trust a software company that pulls the plug because something becomes controversial with their life? Currently, when you’re a war fighter your life depends on your software.”

Great video ! I really do have a quick question. For someone with less than $10,000 to invest, How would you recommend we enter the market? I am looking study some traders and copy their strategy rather than investing myself and losing money emotionally. Whats your take on this approach?

    • @stevenlontok46

I tried copy trading, just when I started investing last Christmas. Had a poor experience, the guy I copied made many small trades, slowly loosing money. What good came out of it was that it gave me an insight into how the market really works. Make sure you do your homework!

When the market was bullish and everything was on the green, I copied trades from eToro traders, and frankly I’m happy by this decision. My portfolio went up with around 6% for a week. Once the market went red I sold my profits. My actual experience is that my returns are different than the people I copy so liquidate all my assets and recopy only 1 trader. So far I am up 33.41% which already includes the recent market decline. As long as you do your research on who you’re copying and what their strategy is, it’s a nice hands-off way to invest.

“The idea” of democracy is definitely the right way to state this. Our nation’s elections are corrupted through lobbying and we spread “democracy” by force. It is actually imperialism by hegemony. I’m not saying it is right or wrong but it is what it is.

He's a firm believer in progressive idealogies. This company is like the Minority report in its infancy. He believes in trends that extend past administrations. Palantir is deep state, make no mistake.
if conscience gives sway to the dollar then the IPO is probably worth a buck or two.

I dont understand how a company without compitition from pretty much anyone cant make profit charging the US Government. The U.S. govt. will pretty much pay what is required to get the job done. So why is Palatir losing 300 million in 2020.? IF they just charged double for their only existing tech, the gov will pay.

If a contra-Palantir business model in the West that's viable arises, e.g. more ethical, I'll invest. I'll probably invest in Palantir in the near future, until that happens.

For everybody praising Karp in the comments, have you actually taken the time to look at the financial statements of Palantir? The company finished with a net income loss of nearly $600 million the past two years. Additionally, their free cash flow is about 180 million in the red in the last year. There are reasons why they're going public and private investors are selling off their stock.

That's the same argument that was made against Amazon and Tesla. If you see the trajectory of increasing revenues and increasing margins, you should be able to connect the dots. Financials are all backward facing. Those who focus too much on financials, do not understand they cannot predict the future.

Yes, thats whats been turning me off of the stock. Its entertaining to look at and if I could get it at 2-3 price to earnings I would consider it but as it stands its 20x overvalued. I'll considering buying once the lock period is over and insiders sell but if it stays above $20 my money is better put elsewhere.

@@humblegambler Amazon != Tesla. Amazon has been a very profitable company that as it stands does not rely on continual investment in R&D to continually reap in profits. Jeff took revenues and invested them into R&D to put his business farther ahead than anyone else. If you subtract tesla's R&D costs (which will continually be an ongoing cost since it is an ev company) you will see that it is still not profitable and when it is profitable which I believe it will be quite soon, peoples dreams of $800 a share will be shortlived once the market is filled with audi ev's and toyota ev's the sell off will be brutal.
