If you own a Porsche 993, then perhaps you've opened your door and heard a clunking noise. Look down towards the A-pillar, and the hinge for the check strap is probably broken. While it may look like a simple fix, it is, in fact, quite involving, requiring the removal of the door, welding, priming, and painting. Though this isn't really a DIY sort of fix, watch the video to learn the correct way to fix the problem if your 993 is afflicted.
If you decide to do this repair, you’ll need to take precautions before welding (as on any modern car). Disconnect the modules (computers) that you can easily get to, mainly the DME (Digital Motor Electronics). If you do not disconnect the modules, add a large capacitor to protect them. Leave the battery connected as well, because it also acts like a large capacitor.

Thank you for this level of detail. It really shows the true root cause of a door strap failure, as well as the correct way to repair.

Wow great detailed step by step video! I learned a lot. The door strap issue is why I always tell my passengers riding in my 993 that I will open and shut their door for them! Thanks for making this helpful video! Cheers!

I recently replaced those door stops on my 78 and added reinforcement. Much simpler operation.

One item to mention - full proper repair should also involve yellow zinc chromating the check strap since the protective coating was removed when grinding down the stops.

I've just learnt how to do this myself and was the first thing I said out loud when the strap was being ground down.

Any prophylactic measures coming to mind to ensure that this issue doesnt happen in the first place?

Such a bummer that the removal of the second door pin with the P290 tool was skipped. How was that done? How were the pin reinstalled?

Thanks for posting this! Anyone know if there’s a shop in Arizona that would do this good of a job? One reputable shop I talked to basically told me that’s just the way these doors are. (i.e. live with it) Maybe I need to plan a road trip up north to drop my car off at this shop. Lol

Thank you for the video. Very informative. Are there ways to avoid this issue or is it likely to happen at some point?

This is something that could happen over time from regular use. We recommend being gentle when opening doors. For example, try not to swing it open until the strap checks the door; especially if the car is pointed downhill.

Does anyone know of a capable and competent shop near Los Angeles that could PROPERLY tackle this? Too many hacks out there who talk a good game but simply can’t or won’t do this the right way. Would love to know where to go and save myself the headache or disappointment.

Why not just do it right and replace that part of the pillar?

Tough call to say this isn't "right".

@@pocketscience911 I had that problem on my 993. I asked the body shop what is the definitive solution and they said to replace the pillar. Seems extreme but it will solve the problem. My Cayenne has a way better check strap setup.
