    What I like about the flat screen Sonys, besides the component inputs, is the dark shade of the glass. I can't even stand the way the lighter glass screens look it's like why did they not bother to darken it? Because they were already making dark glass on computer monitors by then. But it took them to the 2000's to realize that it also looks good on TVs I guess. It would be cool if there were something like the anti-glare coating that Sony put on the PVMs but darker that you could put on lighter colored screen to help that. Because I'd probably prefer the curved glass of a 90's Sony but the tone of the glass is why I ultimately like my 2000's Sony more.

The colors do not pop as much with 480i content and I watch a lot of movies. Also, the curved glass makes the screen look smaller than it's 35 inches to me and, personally, I prefer a 40 inch screen.

    Hey I finally nabbed one of these, the 32XBR48 a week ago at a thrift store. However the tube appears to have high hours, I had to lower the picture and brightness just as yours had to get the picture to look good. good thing about Sony Trinitrons is that even with high hours they still look sharper than most of other TV brands. And the colors look great.

      It's interesting that you say that. I've heard that the older curved glass sonys are dimmer-even with low hours but I only had the one so I can't really say. Mine was dim and did have a "tired" look to it. I sold mine for $100 about a month ago. You have the original xbr correct? The one with native rgb? How does the 48 compare to that one?

    You’re absolutely right about the color and feel it’s exactly like my pvm! It’s an amazing set! I have 18 crt TVs atm that number is always changing and this is the best consumer set by far! I think it’s possible sharper than my 36fv300 and they are side by side and the thing slays the interlace flicker on 480i !!!!!!! I can’t play the Wii on my pvm without getting a headache lol the xbr is masks the flicker amazingly and the colors blow away all 3 of my d series and all my other consumer sets! Mine is also the kv-35xbr48

    • @riggel8804

      yeah, I have my xbr200 right next to my xbr48 and bvm1911. All are hooked up to my ps2 and computer (that puts out 480i in desktop) so I can compare the interlace flicker easily. Trinitrons don not have bad interlace flicker as a general rule but the xbr48 is definitely the best I have ever seen in this department. Do you have any experience with Panasonic Taus? Or the Toshiba AF models? I have always wanted to check those out.

Here’s my current tv list I’m still looking for a larger pvm but this one is doing the job rn my area is barren I’ve made 200+ phone calls and emails in 4 months looking for pvms 😅 the toshiba af series is probably the best aside from Sony they look amazing I have a new sealed toshiba 14af42 and an opened like new barely used one from the same guy there was a 2nds sealed one but it went to a buddy! They have composite in x2 composite out x1 and component and s video in all on a 14” set and the screen and geometry are wonderful! I love them! The toshiba mw-24fpx is also very nice for vhs and dvd sadly since it’s a combo it only have composite in but I’d love to rgb mod it and have an amazing all in one 24” the tube is fantastic! I don’t currently own a Panasonic but I’ve seen them and I’d put them in this order as the top 4 Sony, toshiba, jvc then Panasonic as the top 4 brands for consumer crt TVs I don’t have enough experience with pvms to say what’s best for sure with them based on personal experience I’ve seen Panasonic20” and my

I was watching an anime movie which looked ok when there wasn’t much going on, but during fast action scenes I could see a lot of black lines on the outlines of characters and objects like planes, especially if the outlines were in a diagonal orientation they became very noticeable. This all happened on a curved Sony KV-32XBR45, which is similar to the XBR48, but through S-video which is the best it has, no component input. It was too distracting and I tried to like this tv, but I hated that I could see those dark, bold lines during fast movement. I haven't gone all the way through with calibrating it or adjusting each value to the average to see the difference but looking forward to experimenting with it. Both are HD but only the XBR910 is a CRT. I bought it new in 2003 for $2,300 at Circuit City. The 52XBR2 was $5K open box at Best Buy and I totally regret that one. The XBR910, on the other hand, got a lot more “WOW!”s out of people even years after the XBR2 was obsolete. Still have it but I had to give up the XBR2 after a tornado last year. I also have a KV-25XBR in the original box in a storage unit but I have reason to believe it probably doesn’t work.
      The XBR910 is the precursor to the XBR960. Exact same tube. Only other difference is the Memory Stick slot requires an adapter for MSDuo, they added CableCARD, and they switched from DVI to HDMI. Oh: And they dropped the 30” option (both are available in 34”).
      Yeah, I always point out that YPbPr has more bandwidth for HD with fewer channels. That’s because it doesn’t waste an entire channel on sync that happens between visible lines anyway, it dedicates an entire channel to shared brightness rather than transmitting the duplicate detail on every channel, it only needs to transmit the difference for Blue and Red detail, and Green detail can be algorithmically restored without loss. RGBS is just wasteful and ends up becoming bandwidth-limited at lower resolutions for the same cables. It’s the reason you can use the same cables for 1080p on a PlayStation 3 when set to YPbPr but only 480i in RGsB.

Mine was deeply gouged so I ordered the TV version off eBay to do a panel swap. Ironically, the Kiosk was using official S-Video cables but the Samsung’s manual clearly shows that the VGA port supports RGBHV, RGBS, and RGsB. Since then I found that some computer monitors support RGsB despite not having it in the documentation.

      @@N1twoN12 There is a lot going on here. I don't think either of your tvs will output 480p. They are both standard definition 480i/240p sets and that is a good thing. I have never seen that Sanyo tv but it is interesting. It has a flatscreen, which I prefer, and it has component. Component will not give you a higher resolution. It just cleans up the video signal so the image is sharper with less artifacts. Sometimes tvs with low quality tubes actually look better with composite than component because you get this weird screen door/grid pattern when the image is clean. Those tubes actually look better with a dirtier composite image. However I would gues that that Sanyo has a good tube in it. It probably looks really good with component. I would plug in some cables and check it out. You do not need to buy expensive cables for component they don't suffer from interference like rgb does.
      All that being I would rather game with s-video on a trinitron than component on a jvc. Trinitrons have a look to them that I love. Most other people seem to prefer the Trinitron look. But you need to decide what you like. Some people don't like a sharp image and prefer to game with rf on a 8 inch shadow mask. Other people, like me, like rgb/componet on a big ass 36 inch trini

  • @Zebra66
    @Zebra66 3 роки тому

    You don't get larger gaps between scanlines from increasing the horizontal res or screen size. It's related to bloom. Higher end TVs have superior voltage regulation and bloom less.
    Cheaper sets bloom more as you increase brightness and / or contrast causing the image to change size which reduces the visible gaps between lines.
    You can vary the size of the gaps yourself by increasing contrast until you see light bleed between lines. Or reduce contrast and watch the gaps grow...
    Also, those old Trinitrons are not the curved ones that have better geometry. All Trinitron tubes are flat (although the later models are slightly flatter). The curved tubes people talk about are those bubble shape slot mask tubes used by most other brands. They look far better than Trinitron aperture grille tubes for old games.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  3 роки тому +4

      Some of what you're saying makes sense but some of it is wrong.
      Regarding scanlines: If you look at two crts that are the same model i.e. kvxxfv13, lets say one is a 27 inch and the other is 36 inch. The 36 inch is going to have thicker scanlines. I know from experience. Plus it makes sense if you think about it. Everything is bigger on the 36, including the scanlines.
      The bubble tubes you are talking about are curved in two planes and are spherical in shape. The curved glass sony in this video is curved in one plane and is cylindrical in shape. But it is still a curved glass crt. Curved glass Sonys don't suffer from geometry issues in the same way flat screen Sony crts do. Again, I speak from experience I've owned 4 curved Sony's, 4 bubble tubes and a fuck load of flat screen crts.

    Just found one after 3+ years of searching, was 2hrs away but was totay worth it. Could not be happierthe geometry is great, tiny convergence near the top and focus blurring a bit around the edges. Any way to sharpen the outer edges and correct the convergence? Anyone know what tye original stand for this is?

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  Рік тому

      I got a video on how to service crts. There is a section in there about corner stuff. I would try using magnets on the tube as well as making some convergence strips and stickining them under the yoke. You can also try monkeying around in the service menu or turning the focus pot. Beware if your not careful you could fuk it up. Just pay attention and you should be fine. Don't expect to improve it too much though. tube is old dude.

      I believe that one lacks component inputs. So no RGB unless you hardware mod it. Other than that it's probably good. It's really old so cross your fingers. Your going to need some good luck.

      I have observed that xbr crts are more well known for their high end hd crts i.e. xbr450 however there are a number of xbr CRTs that are sd i.e. xbr48, xbr200, xbr250.

      It would be bad form to RGB mod this TV. It is probably the only curved glass sony with component inputs. Use the component inputs. I have a video comparing rgb to component video you might be interested in. I also have another video on how to transcode rgb into component video.
