Got a Grote a couple of weeks ago and I've been cosmetically customizing it (tuners, bridge, tailpiece, pickup covers) and I'm digging the look. Next will be a couple of SD pickups and upgrading the pots to 500k and the ability to split the pickups. Seems like a lot for a guitar that was under $200, but being able to have the customized guitar I really wanted for under $500 AND having done the work myself is worth it.
Great video and beautiful guitar. I bought one of those Volgoa guitars that looks like a PRS off Amazon. I’m a drummer learning to play guitar and will dial it in but just got it and real quick went to tune it and not no issue with the other strings but the G string won’t tune up properly. I did not change the strings yet but the tuning machine on that G string feels a bit loose on the knob part than all the others. Any idea what it might be? Guitar looks like they did a great job cosmetically and plan on changing the tuners,Pups, pots and strings. I do think the pits were small. The neck is perfectly flat. Bought the purple one with coupon shipped to my door by Amazon prime for $125 plus tax? I’m sure it will be just fine for me. Probably want bother changing the pups until I can play better. So any ideas would be great and will will subscribe to your channel right now. I worked out there back in 1990 or so when I worked on the Phoenix court house installing the granite when they redid a bunch of stuff on it. I became friends with a guitar player named Kenny Gleason who had a house painting business and heard he passed away a few years ago. Then we were buddies and would jam with a bass player who also played keyboards by the name of Scott Wallace who lived in Scottsdale. Curious if anyone knows of him and if he might still be around. Back then he had a major drinking problem and we just lost contact. He played a few times on the Tom Tabback talk show they filmed at the Mesa Holiday Inn. Tabback use to own back then a supplements company but sold it and now owns an AM radio station I guess in Sadona.
What's with the crazy amount of string on the tuning machines? Lock them in if you are worried about slippage. Too much excess makes for a battle in keeping it tuned.
The Grote LP** guitars aren't *cheap* by a few standards. Obviously they are not near the price of a Les Paul, or even a middle of the road Epi with good pickups. The quality of these guitars have gone up, and the company listens when customers (especially Guitar Tubers) give feedback. I have a Grote Jazz with a Trapese tailpiece and since I purchased it last year around Xmas, the quality on these guitars have gotten much better. I've upgraded the tuners and pots, as well as the China-matic saddles (they have an issue with their engineering....the threading is so bad the posts wiggle way too much) and it plays very nice now. I will upgrade the pickups eventually, but I need to find ones that will sound like they belong in a Jazz guitar without the overpriced crap saturating the market.
That's all the fun of getting a budget guitar, the upgrade and set up is what I enjoy most, making a cheapo play and sounds like a million bucks, some of these budget guitars, are giving the name brand guitar makers,a run for their money, grotes are a decent budget brand.
I've been looking at these Grote and similar cheap LPs for a while. Should I save up for a top end Epiphone or even a Gibson or should I spend mad money on one of these cheapos. The debate continues.
Hell, there's at least one YT video that shows these Grotes do not even come with real humbuckers in there. I bet there's a single wound bobbin under each of those covers, and nothing else. Certainly not decent Epi p'ups.
Thanks Dane! I plugged it in as soon as I got home, and it sounds great!
Just a basic tip : put your string in the peg and CUT them at the next peg . You don't need to wind the shit out of them lo
Some people enjoy making more work for the next tech. Ask me how I know....
I have a couple of Grotes in my collection. Love 'em! It really is all about the setup. Nice upgrade with the SD's.
Wish you did a before and after on the pickups
love the new "today's string choice"!
I'm surprised he didn't have you upgrade the pots while you were in there. Great video. You can't go wrong with the Duncan's.
what an upgrade. those pickups are worth more than the whole guitar.
Did you see where the guy opened the humbucker from a Grote and it was a single coil with the space for the other one empty.

I'm glad that you found that suction cup you were missing last episode. That m1 looked awesome

Dane, its good to clean the Soldering tip each time with Steel wool
It keeps any bad out of the connection
Thanks for doing that
