Thanks man. Another super helpful video; your subscription option is becoming more tempting the more I see. It's great to get to see your examples and hear your wisdom and views on the subject. I'm still in the market for lights for my soon-to-be home studio, and still deciding on lights for the budget but this is helpful for me to add to the pot. Right now Elinchrom systems are my target as more affordable than Broncolour but highly capable it seems, and more consistant than Godox etc, though I've seen lots of great photos people have captured using the Godox range too.
Thank you so much Ted! After posting a video not recommending Godox, a general theme emerged in the comments and that was that people who needed a lot of power ran into problems and people expressed color inconsistency problems, but many people were happy with their purchase. After switching from Profoto to Elinchorm two and a half years ago, I I have been very happy. I think Profoto may have faster speed statistics overall, but I don't think it would make much of a difference unless I was shooting athletes or water droplets everyday. Given that you will have access to power at home you might want to consider the more affordable higher powered ELC500s - ua-cam.com/video/wmzqRmHJoNU/v-deo.html
@@JohnGress Thanks man. If only all folks were as generous with their wisdom as you. According to Elnchrom website, a dual pair of these is about 1,500 Euros (which given I am in the UK I have to roughly equate to UK British pounds of course = £1,281) and a pair of the ELC500s are £1480. So very similar in price. But as you say, more power with the ELC500 and more suitable to home studio type work vs portable shooting all over the place. I guess with the One you pay for portability and not the power. Whereas the ELCs500 you pay for the power and not the portability. Great insight. Thanks
Great analysis. Sorry I was a little off because I forgot there was a two pack of the ONEs. I actually have a mix of ELCs and battery powered lights so I can have what I need when I need it, so maybe having two of each is an option, economically. I use my ONE in a hard reflector so I will never be under powered, but if i had it in a large softbox I would probably be annoyed from time to time.
Still love my Elinchrom lights and modifiers. But, I've always had a problem with "droop" when my lights are attached to a large softbox. Wish Elinchrom would make the light stand mount more robust.
I haven’t experienced that problem with other lights and like I said the problem only happened when I was using the accessory that wasn’t included with the light.
I am the perfect customer for this. I went from full Elinchrom ELB 500 x4 to Profoto B1 500 Air and I too was surprised by the smaller spread but loved the wireless battery on the unit design but they were a bit too big and heavy for my modified Elinchrom modifiers. I also had to use the Elinchrom Quadra adaptor which is a solution but a poor one. I have a Bridal fashion shoot at Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe Cheltenham (UK) on the 28th September and I mention this as there is no electricity or means to charge on site. So I do hope Elinchrom has at least four of these put by with my name on!!!! Thank you for getting this out there - this is one reason why we subscribe. Good day to you one and all.

Good review. It seems like the strobe power was often on the edge of not quite enough. I like the comment about the benefits of the strobe tube design and placement. Thanks, John
Thanks! It will be perfect for some shooting styles and applications. Having a 500ws in your kit with this guy will probably be the way to go for many people. I used it last night in my Parabolix even with heavy gels and it kept up. Speaking of which it was really easy to gel thanks to the dome.
So we got the regular elinchrom mount. The smaller Q mount.. and now the sorta but not really profoto mount.. The only upside of this system would be a single trigger. But having to use adaptors is a pita.
Thanks for the video. I picked up on your tip where your box was drooping and you used the adaptor ring. I am already using ELB 500s and now have two One heads. The mount couldn't support the Phottix Raja 105 and 120 boxes w/o drooping. Took it to Houston Camera yesterday and Angel took the lever out of the Godox box, removed the One knob, and poof, tightening worked and my 105 now stays in place. Wish they wouldn't have put such a crappy knob on a new head. If it's just aesthetics, they need to talk to working pros that don't care how a lever makes a light look.
The problem is the Godox options seem to do everything this can for cheaper and in a more compact form factor... My friend swears by Elinchrom products for some compelling reasons and I just wished Elinchrom brought in it's HS feature (instead of HSS) as it's faster than shutter sync option on this unit as it's too underpowered to have that limited power further chopped up into lots of mini-pulses
nice review. Started years ago with the Elinchrom Rangers since I'm a location shooter. Incredible lights but that old lead battery weighed as much as a car battery. Later I switched to the original Elinchrom Quadras and have used them for years. Love the light and the light weight. But have never liked having the cords. Often in situations I instead switch to speedlights for quick location portraits. I've been tempted by the B10's and similar for years. Finally just got the ONE. Haven't started playing with it yet but I look to it to replace the speed lights and I think the ONE will easily equal two or three speed lights. Also, it will allow me to use it with the Quadras for a third light and the same remote.
Great way to look at it. I am sure they will be more powerful than 2-3 speedlites and of course easier to use. I too had the ranger (and style monolights) when I started with Elinchrom and i think they must have puled that battery out of a mini cooper!
So just to verify the default modifier Mount is Profoto and if one wants to use Elinchrom modifiers you need to use the adaptor which can cause problems when using heavier modifiers ? Last did Elinchrome discuss why they went with a non replaceable battery? Or is it replaceable if you send it in to Elinchrome for service oh btw your images are amazing
Thank you so much. Profoto is the default and you need to use one of two adapters to use it with Elinchrom modifiers. The included one works well. The dedicated Elinchrom to Profoto adapter causes problems with larger modifiers.
Great review John! Yours was the first, and probably only review I need to watch for this product! I like they kept the exposed bulb and how they just kept it a little exposed still. @@JohnGress Thanks so much for your answer John. What is the reason for you using an octabox instead of a square or rectangular box? Some people use those to mimic a reflection coming from a window for instance.
I placed an order for the ELC 500 in June. Still waiting because I truly believe Elinchrom is the way to go. Any ways, the one look interesting even though is a lot less powerful than the ELC 500. I believe is a good add to the kit.
Great review as always, such a shame they couldn’t squeeze out another stop of light , in its current form I would expect many to keep hitting the full power and having to modify their modifier choice to get around its lack of power. Sweet looking light though but for now will stick with my elb400’s which have never let me down, will wait for the next iteration that hopefully will match the elb400 power but battery and head combined.
Thanks! They did tease a FIVE at the end of the ONE launch video. I know what you mean about wishing there was a little more power. For what its worth I have three ONEs now and I shot all day in my studio today with indirect strips and a 70cm deep octa and I never hit the limit. But 131 ws just isn’t enough for a large octa so I’ll probably own a few of each.
Come on, Elinchrom, 900 bucks for a 130 Ws light with a built in battery that is not interchangeable? You're nuts, folks. Oh, I forgot, the trigger is another 250 bucks. Did I mentioned, that I love my Godox lights, my SMDV Briht 360s and my Phottix Indras? And I am a long time Elinchrom user with 2 Rangers, 2 Quadras, some BXRi, lots of RX lights and tons of modifiers included the Maxi that you used, John. Fantastic modifier, btw.
I wouldn't compare it to anything that isn't made by Profoto or Broncolor. The other brands make lights that overheat and cook themselves or fall short in other ways.
@@JohnGress I know many battery powered lights, John. ua-cam.com/video/tPThG19fmwY/v-deo.html This video shows the Phottix Indras that I would definitely compare to Profoto and Bron quality. Okay, it is also hefty in price. But it's in an all metal housing, not like Elinchrom's One. And the SMDV Briht lights are fantastic, too. Smaller than the One, more than double power and a way better bulb style flash bulb. Westcott's battery powered flashes (Jinbei/Rollei branded in some regions) have one and only one trigger for all camera makers. Yeah, right, one can use the same trigger for Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fuji and so on. Just 99 bucks and with TTL capability, too! 249 bucks for a camera related trigger is just toooo pricey, John. As much as I like Elinchrom (especially the old 500 classic series, the ranger line and also the Quadras), the One shows that the company is far away from today's photographer's needs. But btw, thank you very much for your informative review, John. Love your style and your videos.
Thanks! I have always found the Elinchrom lights to be consistent that 4.0 on one light is 4.0 on another, unless they are old. I guess there could be variations between new models, but I doubt it.
As a Profoto user it is nice to see that there is another system that accepts Profoto modifiers without an adapter, but can it also be fired by a Profoto Air Remote? That would really be nice.
Its easy to do with a 10x10 / 25 x 25cm sheet and some gaffer tape. Elinchrom modifiers are the best. Here are two videos: ua-cam.com/video/k92rw0japLg/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/sbGQsAouTFc/v-deo.html
I gag tapped some on during a shoot the other night and it was really easy to do. I think because the head is so much smaller I could easily envelope it with a 10x10” gel.
Since everyone knows that the weak point that severely limits the lifespan of electronics is the rechargeable battery system, why would any flash manufacturer produce a product that doesn’t have a removable battery? In three years the unit will probably be useless. How do we know this? Phones.
Hi Rohan, we totally understand this concern. That's why when engineering the ONE our team did two things to specifically address it. First is the battery cell itself which is an advanced cell with no memory effect that is rated for 400,000 full power flashes. Next is the ONE's internal architecture was designed to make swapping out the cell a very fast process that any of our service centers can carry our with minimal turn around time.
I've replaced the battery in my iPhone 5S twice. Individual LiIon cells are fairly standardized items, since they're made by only a few manufacturers, and soldering is not a difficult skill to learn.
How do you trigger it? Would it require a dedicated trigger? Just about to buy a set of these lights but I don't think they come with a trigger. Don't think there's a slot to plug in a generic one?
Hello for HHS and TTL you will need the camera specific Pro transmitter. Here is the one for Canon: amzn.to/2YY38ou If you just want to use regular flash you can use Elinchrom EL-Skyport Transmitter Plus https:adorama.rfvk.net/NK0aAP
@@JohnGress Thanks so much for your reply! I just got the Pro transmitter. Was looking for a cheaper alternative but thought I'd do it properly ;) ?Thanks again!
Only a working photographer know this nuances!!! By the way Is the modeling light bright enought inside a Rotalux 69 ? or inside your 150? if you do headshots can you see anything at close range? thank you
For me, my three ONEs will be for small strip softboxes and hard reflectors and 500ws lights will be for big softboxes, and outdoors in medium and large softboxes.

Thank you for sharing this info!! ;) Question how would you compare this to the Elinchrom ELC 125 and the 500? Just curious if this mono-light replaces that kit. Thank YOU!!!!
I think its more of a 125ws version of the ELB500. At this power level it will fit in many kits, but I think most people will need to own an ELB500 or ELC500 to stay versatile.
I wish it’s more powerful though. That 131w is my reservation for it. I have used elinchrom ever since and as much as I want this I have some second thoughts. Godox for a cheaper price is putting out some compelling products. Although of course I already have a full array of elinchrom modifiers:(
I can understand how a little more power could make it more appealing, but the godox products are really just disposible. I was surprised to learn on page 40 of the AD200pro manual it warns not to shoot more than 40 full power flashes without allowing the light to cool for 10 minutes, otherwise it will damage the flash head. In the AD300Pro manual it states on page 32 that after 20 consecutive high speed sync shots it may over heat and the same can be said for the AD200Pro too (p34). I have also seen the same warnings in other Godox manuals. I use to use 30 year old Profoto heads and I have some older Elinchrom heads now too. I just doubt that any of these budget heads will make it five years.
Oh wow never knew about those limitations. Thanks for the info. I might have to stick with elinchrom then after all. Probably just get one to try alongside my elb and elc lights. Thanks again.
No problem. Everyone just looks at the top line specs and the price, and thinks cheaper is better. But it's sort of like saying a 1990 Chevy Corsica can go 60mph and it costs 1/4 the price of a BMW therefore BMW is a looser!
@@nelsonbustamante8756 Old mate John here has never used Godox & got raked over the coals for his uneducated opinion of them having never used them. Godox have great lights been using them for 4 years still going strong for me!.
@@JohnGress Not sure, I think the profoto/bron/Godox solution is the right one generally, low battery on location, just swap them as they stand and have pass through power when you’re near ac. I've been waiting for Elinchrom to release wireless flash for a long time. And they finally succeeded. 131ws... I think 50ws would be better. Who needs that much power?
But you do already have a 50WS version, just turn the One down. It's much better to have more power that one can reduce than less power you can't increase.

I have seen them work fine with a 135cm octa and below, excluding the 100 deep.
Shots look amazing
Thank you so much!
Did I see it right, that this without adapter is just fine for mounting Profoto modifiers? ;)
That's right, its diameter matches the Profoto ring size.
@@JohnGress I know many battery powered lights, John.
ua-cam.com/video/tPThG19fmwY/v-deo.html
This video shows the Phottix Indras that I would definitely compare to Profoto and Bron quality.
This was really good. Is there any chance that you compare the output power between the One and ELC 500?
That’s a no on the Profoto air remote compatibility
@@Molaleni A yes would have really surprised me...
Thanks a lot sir,but may I know it's come with ant trigger or which trigger are compatible with it?
Thanks. It doesn't come with a transmitter. You can use any of the Elinchrom triggers, but you'll need the pro one for HHS.
@@JohnGress Thanks sir
Curious what are the options for using gels? Also maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I can't find many modifiers for elinchrom.
Its easy to do with a 10x10 / 25 x 25cm sheet and some gaffer tape. Elinchrom modifiers are the best. Here are two videos: ua-cam.com/video/k92rw0japLg/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/sbGQsAouTFc/v-deo.html
are you familiar with the Elinchrom FIVE?
I saw it in a video clip.
Hi John
Can you do a video with the para
Maybe this? Hard light shootout: Parabolic vs. beauty dishes for headshots
ua-cam.com/video/CxT6o4I0Pvs/v-deo.html
Have Elinchrom made it any easier to fit gels with this new light rather than the old 'duct tape' solution?
I gag tapped some on during a shoot the other night and it was really easy to do. I think because the head is so much smaller I could easily envelope it with a 10x10” gel.
They have a small range of half dome shaped magnetic gels. You just snap them on.
In 3 years the "new" model will have a removable battery.
I've replaced the battery in my iPhone 5S twice. Individual LiIon cells are fairly standardized items, since they're made by only a few manufacturers, and soldering is not a difficult skill to learn.
But the lifespan of the equipment isn’t the lifespan of the battery system, the lifespan of an automobile isn’t the lifespan of the battery.
By the way Is the modeling light bright enought inside a Rotalux 69 ? or inside your 150? if you do headshots can you see anything at close range? thank you
Thanks! The specs say the the lamp has the same output as the ELC500. 3000 lumens
@@JohnGress THX, well that is 50 watts not bad for a small unit
Great review, really helpful. I'm still dubious if this will be enough for stationary automotive work outdoors. What do you think?
Thanks. I am not familiar with how much power that requires.
I got them. Thanks
Enjoy!
Impressive demonstration. How does it work with elb 500's
Thanks! Seamlessly. They’ll probably be next to each other in my location kit.
@@JohnGress Until the Elinchrom Five comes out, I guess. I hope you can show those in another video soon.
Nicely done on the review John! Looks like a compelling flash.
Thank you so much Paul!
Wondering why I don't buy 2-3 Godox AD300's?
The build quality and longevity of these lights is the biggest reason why you would choose them over discount brands.
@@JohnGress expensive brands fail too. According my bank account anyway.
So, do I sell now my 4 RX600, Ranger Hybrid, ELB400, 4 Lithiumpacks, 2x S heads for this? 🤔
For me, my three ONEs will be for small strip softboxes and hard reflectors and 500ws lights will be for big softboxes, and outdoors in medium and large softboxes.
Are you using the 35x100 elinchrom strip box for the hairlight?
this is the one www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZZC2219/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B06ZZC2219&linkCode=as2&tag=john0d1-20&linkId=ba359d0c0b361385ecf74a29c68ef08c
@@JohnGress Thank you. I looks smaller as a hair light than in product shots. Appreciate it!
Sure thing. Its the perfect size for one person. It'll work for two people too.
@@JohnGress that’s what I thought. Thanks for your reply!!
Not immediately sold on an internal battery flash, if we are talking about longevity.
I know where you're coming from but there is probably a reason why its going to be internal like a phone battery.
@@JohnGress Not sure, I think the profoto/bron/Godox solution is the right one generally, low battery on location, just swap them as they stand and have pass through power when you’re near ac.
I’d be very interested in a guide number and volume output test vs an ad300 which has the most similar form factor to this.
Super sir ,
Thanks .......👌👌

I've been waiting for Elinchrom to release wireless flash for a long time. And they finally succeeded. 131ws... I think 50ws would be better. Who needs that much power?
Most people.
@@JohnGress ok let's wait for 5ows version…
But you do already have a 50WS version, just turn the One down. It's much better to have more power that one can reduce than less power you can't increase.
what is the advantage of the ONE compared to the ELB500 TTL?
Mainly the WS.
Portability? Internal battery....not cords...fits in a backpack...
what is HHS.?
High Speed Sync www.elinchrom.com/discover/educational/what-is-hi-sync-or-hss/
