Being from Canada and having gone through surgery myself last year, I find that NHS in UK leans heavily towards conservative treatment while in the US it's mostly operative. I don't think this debate will ever settle. Unfortunately, I did have some nerve injury as well from a very tight cast but since the sural nerve is sensory, not a big deal for me.
What's most important is working with your physiotherapist to have a personalized plan that works for you. I came back to sport at about 8 months. Running and jumping. It does take time and is a humbling experience.
