Love this ! I have an 02 325xi and was considering getting rid of it an getting a rwd e46 for a street/ drift build! But after watching this, i might pick up a used tranfercase and do the same, for a side note, there is no difference between the 325 and 330 for both awd and rwd. Except the 330 has bigger brake rotors, and internally being a 3.0l vs 2.5l. Physically the long block is the same, axles and suspension are the same, the plus side of the awd one is the axles all the way around are beefier than the 2wd counterparts
It could but the entire subframe is different so I’m not sure. Would have to research it. At that rate you’d prolly be better just finding a cheap donor car
The entire drivetrain including the subframe if different. So I’m not sure. I didn’t want to spend then money on parts and have it not work or need an entire car.
You need to keep the end of the front axels in the wheel bearings so they stay together… but the inner part of the axel that goes through the oil pan can come out.
Yo did you drop your transmission with the transfer case on attached? I removed all the torx bolts and i cant seem to free it so ive torn apart half my vehicle. You have the closest video i could find to this
No I disconnected both driveshafts and took the transfer case off the trans. There’s some bolts on top of the transfer case that are hard to see and get to.. watch my rear diff removal video about half way through I explain removing the transfer case. I took the rear diff and the transfer case out at the same time.
Hi! I would like to ask you some specific question about converting an e46 from awd to rwd, since you done it. I'm about to buy a 330xd (diesel awd) but I need to know IF and HOW its possible to convert it to rwd. Can you help me? Thanks in advance!
Hey I messaged u!! Idk if the drivetrain in the diesels is the same… do some research. If it is… I’ll make a video trying to better explain what I did. If you get stuck… Idk if it will work or not tbh especially not looking at it. I did all this not knowing if it would work. Reddit said it could be done… so I gave it a shot 🤣… I had already bought the car. I just made sure everything I did could be undone 🤷♀️. I bought a spare t-case on eBay. Make sure you separate the front axles and leave the ends in the knuckle side so the wheel bearings stays together. I mention that in a separate video I think.
@@AshleyVaughn thanks a lot! I will do some more research before starting to mess with it 😁 I really dont want to end up with a christmas tree of lights! On this matter: how long have you been driving the converted rwd? Any issue or is it running just fine?
Hello, I have a 330xi and wanted to do the same. Does it come off like an exact rwd 325i? or is it 2x4 like something like cross section left in the front? Thanks.
The transfer case has a center diff that drives front and rear. Once it’s welded, front driveshaft is out and the axles are broke a down all the power solely goes to the rear. There’s no noticeable difference. Rwd is rwd.
Yeooo I know this is mad old hopefully you see this lmao, but how did she hold up? Spin city? Just picked up a 325xi 6sp couldn’t pass it up since she got red guts but need to convert haha. Thanks lmk, dope video 🤌
@@AshleyVaughn hahahah hopefully I’ll find out a different daily by then but I don’t mind it always been a rwd lover lmao. Shred that track up!! Would make a killer vid. Thank for the response definitely going to try it out 👏
Hello, I have a e46 330xi and wanted to swap it into rwd, but not sure the engine supports of the two are similar in the front. Do you think the two front spots of the xi subframe bolts into the same place as rwd? Do you think it would swapable? Thanks.
finally ive been looking for a video for rwd conversion for so long and ive been wanting to do this on my car if there is anyway i can contact you please let me know
hahahha, Halloween costumes! Wow, i would have assumed those cars would be rear drive biased since the 2wd versions are RWD. Snap rings are the worst!!!! Yes, #migweldlife!!!
Because the kid told me it was rwd and it wasn’t and I talked the kid down a few hundred dollars so I said fuck it I’ll make it rwd. Figured it would make for good content.
@@AshleyVaughn that's understandable. a lot of effort to go that route but you made it which i respect. ill expect some good content from you in the future. skills here is top notch, you can defiantly tackle some crazy projects. i was curious if there was something that i didnt know about the 325xi that was worth doing haha but its all good, cheers and good luck!
Because I’m building this thing as cheap as possible. Drove out to buy it the kid told me it was 2wd and it wasn’t. I talked him down some money and said screw it im here I can drive it home... challenge accepted doing a 2wd conversion.

330 has a bigger intake cam and manifold, but all the parts are interchangeable
I’m putting a 3.0L into the car that’s what I’m building rn… awd vs 2wd everything is different. The axles, the knuckles, the subframe. Everything.
Awesome video! Helped a lot. But I was just thinking if we swapped the transmission and the drive shaft, that should work! What do you think?
It could but the entire subframe is different so I’m not sure. Would have to research it. At that rate you’d prolly be better just finding a cheap donor car
@AshleyVaughn, ya I know, anyway I already converted it like in the video and it's working perfectly so far. Thanks, you're so awesome.
Make sure you take the axles apart!!
saw your video for the first time and i loved it..
fantastic, one question could you not change the gearbox and the differential shaft, I know they are different but the measurements don't match?
The entire drivetrain including the subframe if different. So I’m not sure. I didn’t want to spend then money on parts and have it not work or need an entire car.

Ik this is old but would a rwd trans bolt into the AWD subframe if I changed the driveshaft and oil pan
Maybe a complete subframe swap
The subframe is completely different. Along with the knuckles and everything else. You’d be better off just buying a 2wd to my understanding
Thankyou for responding I really just like this car but I was finding cheap full subframe dropouts that still have the brakes and all
impressive asf! I got a 325xi and am dying to go sideways. Could you tell me how much the all the parts were to get this done? thanks!
I spend $50 on a used transfer case on eBay that’s about it

You too!! If you need any help lmk!
finally got some thing i like to watch..
Would the car still drive if you don't remove the front drive shafts?
Like a 4x4 Jeep with 50/50 force distribution?
In theory yes
It's actually 60-40 split going to the rear, it's more like how a truck works
Not anymore lol
Have you had any issues with this mod yet?
Thanks
None so far
What did y'all do about the driveshafts?
Front DS = Out
Yup!
he said it’s primarily front wheel drive? it’s 68-32 because 68 in the back and 32 in the front

I haven’t had any issues so far tbh. I’ll be tracking the car soon so that’ll be the real test.
It’s useless in the snow so don’t do this and expect to be able to daily it in the winter time tho 🤣 then it’s spin city

You have to swap the entire sub frame. Knuckles. Everything.
What did you remove in the front did you just swap the front end with a rwd car?
No

How do I make my e46 325xi into rwd?
gotta weld the transfer case im doing mine rn
Have to weld the planetary gear solid inside the transfer case like in my video
It is same with 330xi e46 ?
Yes
there is another methot than to solder the transfer case to convert it to 2x4
No there is not.
@@AshleyVaughn ok thank you and did you remove the fuses
We tried just removing the front drive shaft and it doesn’t work because of the planetary gear. And I removed the VSM module

just swap rwd gearbox + drive shaft. sell this gearbox. unnecessary weight in your drivetrain, and imbalance.
