Its a bit interesting that they announced a big Hachette collaboration with the title "Combat Patrol", but by the time the magazine actually releases, most of the combat patrols included in it will be invalidated...
The question is which Combat Patrol they will use. There is a good chance that they only showed pictures of the 9th edition Combat Patrol sets because they did not have pictures from the 10th edition ones.

Honestly, considering they basically showed off the whole series already (instead of just teasing the first few ones), I'm inclined to believe they'll stick to the previewed schedule, it's not like the old patrols' sprues are going OOP anyway, GW has no technical problem producing them and since the new patrols were probably scheduled way before the partnership I don't think they'd bait-n-switch with this big of a promise

They’re really making 3D printing the only way to play big 40K. If they’re continuing on this trajectory they really need to make a permanent suite of battle force boxes or there is just no good way to start playing the premier mode that made the game popular.

I'm morbidly looking forward to seeing how they gut the others of value and models relevant to the big game in the name of balancing a tacked on game mode. At this point it's an above average CP if it has something leaders can actually attach to.
Grey Knights aren’t really Space Marines gameplay wise though, and the big things being removed from the box is a primarily Space Marine thing, so they should be fine.

Only factions that still has a big model is necrons and tyranids, and their big model still got massively downgraded from the doom scythe and hive tyrant. It’s far more likely than not that grey knights will loose the dreadknight.

I think another wave of tank culls will happen next edition anyway. Vindicator, predators, land raider, Helbrute is just a little guy and coming on I think 9 years old. I could be wrong about that one. Idk seems like they have a vehicle refresh coming next edition. More Vashtoor stuff
I suspect that it is like this because of the cultist's cost, for example they seem to want to keep 10th ed combat patrol contents not greater than 2 average cost infantry boxes, half a box (or cheaper box) and a character, for example DA combat patrol is 2 boxes, half a box and a character which is basically equivalent to half a box. A box of idk... Havocs they would consider too generous and second character would not fly with the customers- Cultists it is then. I bet Death Guard box will look something like: lord of contagion (character), blightlord terminators (infantry box 1), 7 plague marines (infantry box 2) and a myphitic blight hauler (half a box cost), maybe 3 extra plague Marine models if they feel generous
This seems like a good box for beefing up an older army that doesn't include things like Cultists or a Master of Possession but has plenty of Lords, Terminators, Rhinos etc.
Grab the old CP, and both new battle sets: $600 to $650 for a massive 2k+ army. Not the best but you have almost everything as an option. 1 prince with wings, 1 Jump lord, 1 chaos lord on foot, 1 Dark apostle, 1 hellbrute , 10 Raptor/talon, 1 Dark commune, 8 Accursed Cultist, 10 Cultist, 10 terminators, 5 possessed, 5 chosen, 5 Havoc, 20 Legionnaires. That is a solid army. Grab a few named characters, more lords and tanks and you have about every option at your disposal. I would only grab the new CP if you want more cult or legionnaires.
I personally don’t mind the hellbrute loss as I wish he was bigger, I do like the battleforce boxes a lot as they give a ridiculous amount of points and a lot of cool models, plus the combat patrol pairs well with either battleforce box as it gives you nice synergy either getting a squad of 10 possessed or making up for the dread talons lack of legionnaires
If you combine the new Combat Patrol box with the Veterans of the Long War box then you get; Chaos Lord (on foot) Master of Possession 10 Possessed 5 Chosen 20 Legionnaires 10 Cultists 10 Terminators Throw in a couple of Rhinos for the Possessed and Chosen, a box of Chosen the fill out the squad, and Abaddon; and you've got a farily decent force at 1975 points.
battleforce boxes are looking great, particularly veterans of the long war. nearly 1k in the box. The other is over 700 I believe. Mix it in with this patrol and you have a starting army I think. Only problem is this patrol has an overlap of three units with the battleforce boxes. I believe with all three you got 20 legionairs, 20 cultists and 10 possessed.
Aye, I suspect that if you going from a standing start, while all three would be viable, grabbing the two battleforces and skipping the cp to pick up some tanks might be the better bet.
Get the 2 battle boxes and the old CP. Dark apostle and a hellbrute. The only overlap is the legionnaires. Then your only missing the big stuff (tanks, monsters, named) to have every CSM option.
Looking forward to seeing the new Grey Knights one, feel like that may be intersting, would also love to see that meme Titan one which is just 1/6th of a titan
I have a fondness for the old Combat Patrol box, I've quite regular taken most of it in bigger games it even makes up the core of my crusade force currently (minus 5 legionaries) plus the old combat patrol rules are still on the app for the other discontinued boxes. As far as the new box it looks OK, less value sucks, but you basically get good back line objective holding with midrange threat, funnily I think the Helbrute or the Havocs from the old box would be the perfect unit to round it out, or a bunch of Obliterators and you've got yourself the start of a good small army
I must say that right now is a premium time for people to start gathering models if they are beginners for CSM. Between the old Combat Patrol, the newer one, and the two battleforce boxes they are kinda spoiled for choices with a lot of core kits. From there it would be a matter of buying more daemon engines and characters if they want them.
It’s a nice box numbers wise, I feel it’s missing a big toy model. Iv taken to playing a lot of CP to help new players ease into the hobby in my area and Iv played the current CP chaos box which is actually pretty well rounded. If I wanted to make a chaos army this wouldn’t be a bad way to get some core units quick. I find CP to be a fun way to get quick games in, but I know I’m In the minority there
The problem is that the Combat Patrol game mode literally only exists because GW couldn't commit to making each box 500pts, so they gave up. And now they're using the fact that they don't have to aim for 500 as an excuse to give worse value for money in every box.

Having seen these last few actually good CPs which manage to be balanced in the game mode AND give a good value and diversity of units to lay the foundation of a list with. CP boxes like drukhari, genestealers, GK, custodes, honestly the old CSM one (which ironically, despite currently seeming a great value is actually just a worse box than the old boarding patrol box which was also cheaper lmao), etc. The downgrade from dark angels' original box to the one which doesn't even know how leaders work is so sad.
It never fails! Every single CP could use either one more cheap unit or swap out the cheap throw in unit(the cultist) for a heavier costed unit to fullfill that 500 point threshold and give that much more of a savings. I genuinely believe if GW did that most people wouldnt complain about how devalued the CP have become. Might as well have upgraded the cultist to the accursed cultist at least. Charging the same price for less points in the box is wild. At least reduce the price down to the AoS Vanguard, now Spearhead boxes, This is still a solid box, models wise, but the points arent there. The Master of Possesion is the only thing saving this box honestly amd youre getting it for free. Anyone should be able to buy two of these and make a quick 1k point army. That should have still been the criteria
As somebody who really struggled when i rejoined the hobby to originally understand that a CP was a discount box and not an "out the box game" im happy they are doing this with CPs
Yo these new chaos models look incredibly cool! Can't wait for all the new black legion. I might grab a box or two of these new models and paint them up as my deathguard warband.
Wayland had 28 copies of the old CSM CP this morning, by the time I placed my order at tea time they were down to 3, a couple of minutes later all gone! They are still up at other stores but only generally those offering less than the full 20% discount.
New Combat Patrol is certainly not a bad box. The main issue is that it locks you into a daemonic build for your army. If you had a different vision for your Long War then you're outta luck!
I feel like they showed the Combat Patrol off slightly by accident. It's only on the Twitter post, and they showed it instead of the Veterans of the Long War box. There's nothing about it in the Chaos reveals article. I think someone made a mistake about which box to post on Twitter
It's a terrible box, because theres way better options for the cultists. Cultists are 40eu for 10 easy to build models. So bad. Previous box was better. All new Combat Patrols in 10th will just be worse then 9th due to removal of ''big'' units / vehicles. The standard Space Marine one especially is a crime.
As somebody with Both a Word bearers AND a night lords army, Yeaaah, im probably getting both of the battle boxes. Would absolutely love if May was somehow the month I won the give-away, but at this point im sort of just committing to spending like 450-ish dollars. Heres to hoping by the time I get them all painted GW doesn't tempt me into starting emperors children.
So if the trend is to remove the big thing, the next greyknight CP will basically the same as now just without the dreadknight... maybe not a libririan in there but Crow or voldus left as HQ. GK have basically 2 sets and 2 models that are GK specific that could be in that box... kind of laughable 😅
So, out of curiosity, I punched all of these units into Auspex's affiliate for the country I live in. When adjusted to USD they came out to around 174$ and the company included free shipping. That was without any promo codes or any additional discounts than the flat discount from the site. So GW gave a solid 14 dollar discount totalling around 8%. What a generous and kind company.
Well when this releases you'd be able to get those same disconts on this box set on top of any savings just from the box. But yeah, 'savings' would be minimal if buying this directly from GW's webstore vs a discount retailer.
@@auspextacticsOh for sure. I didn't really mean it as a math check or anything, it was more or less to point out how shockingly minute some of the recent savings on these boxes have become. Particularly when compared to the old boarding patrols that were (at least for CSM) around 40% MSRP. Albeit I say that fully understanding that the two of them were never really meant to be compared and have never been marketed as serving the same purpose.
Man this should be a whole lot cheaper than the current box. The existing box is much better for army building and the old Start Collecting box was even better than it. I can honestly say I am not all that interested in this box. I got the MoP in the Start Collecting box but I guess those without him would want it. Also the current Combat Patrol didn't exactly have much of a long life.
I am fairly new to W40K, I thought that Boarding Patrols were a goner... I wish they re-released something like the Farsight + Crisis battlesuits boarding patrol with the T'au release
The Dark Apostle turned me off the old Combat Patrol box, seemed a little too Word Beary to me. This looks decent but I'm going to try for both battleforce boxes first.
Very understandable the chaos lord would have been the more versatile choice with the existing combat patrol. But I think the models are more flexible. I just got the combat patrol myself and converted the dark apostle into a chaos lord (for my new word bearers). Made five of the legionnaires into chosen. I spent ages magnetising the Helbrute. Kept the legionnaires for other havocs. I thinks it's a good place to start personally. But I've got rubric marines to put in as battle line already.
as a long time chaos collector i am disappointed with this release and reveal, any chaos player in the hobby for more than 2 editions owns lords and jump lords (probably ones they converted themselves). Jump lord isn't a nice sculpt/pose, chaos lord on foot is nice and good to have multipart but is just a more versatile version of a model we have. The idea of 8 detachments also makes me worry that GW will never be able to properly balance the codex, so will either be nerfed after release or be constantly rebalanced which is not a fun place to be.

I saw combat patrol this morning and got it mixed up with some of the battle force boxes. I thought the Demon Prince was also in the box. It still seems like away to get a lot of Chaos Marine mini’s.

If your army is made up of these basic units, I don't know how "unique" it was going to be in the first place. Either way, the units you choose aren't what makes your army unique, it's your paint schemes and the things you do with the models.
@@StarkMaximum To be fair in CSM terms it's pretty hard to make a completely unique army. Maybe making a Tank Division with purely CSM kits would be one way to do.

For me personally the new Combat Patrol sucks. I’m a newer collector and I already have 20 cultists and 10 marines from the Boarding Patrol with Abadon, and then another 10 marines from the old CP. Substituting the Helbrute and Havocs for Cultists is pretty insulting, and I understand that it should have marines but when they are shoved into so many other boxes they end up devaluing everything. 5 Possessed and a Master is not near enough for anyone who started even last year.
I dont like combat patrols coming with non multi part kit models like dark apostles and master of possession. Kindv makes it not worth buying if you alreday have 1 it would be way cooler and be more versatile if it just had core units than you could buy whatever HQ you want or use already existing ones.
Everyone else has gotten one so far. I guess the test will be Custodes, they have so few units that a change to the combat patrol is least likely (I think they will change all except Guard/Votann/World Eaters though since those are the most modern)
I really don’t get the hate for GW trying to balance out Combat Patrol. New players generally play combat patrol and they can be entirely one sided if you pick a good or bad one
@@calastyphon3414 it’s not about a discount though. It’s about having an army of your faction you can play out of the box. We are mixing the idea that this is a box for collectors to build up their army on a discount, versus an introduction kit for a new player into that army.
@@Grastiars1 value for money is a big thing for new players especially ones like me who were wary of spending too much money. Savings and affordability were the best introduction.

the new CP box has better looking models, the Helbrute is super ugly, but the points/discount cut is hard to swallow. I predict the Veterans of the Long War box will be very popular. the Talons box is alright in terms of looks, but there's way too many cultists in there
It would be pretty OK I guess, not stellar but decent enough. I think the biggest issue would be lack of transports and could use a deamon engine or so. Anyway, my few cents at least. For what it's worth ;)
Definitely a downgrade. Really disappointed with this reveal. They didn't even bother updating the raptor/talon kit. So you have a bunch of shorties running next to full size models in that jump pack box.
pretty terrible box tbh, seems gw are starting a trend of ruining all of their combat patrol boxes! lets hope they do a boarding patrol again sometime soon they were good sets
At least everything is playable in this at every point level, the helbrute and havocs in the previous box are justy plain bad in game or at the very least sub optimal while multiples of this combat patrol will actually be good for new players and there nothing in here that will just gather dust on a shelf.

My bet is that they'll use the old ones. Good way to get rid of a bunch of older stock. Kinda seems like what they did with Imperium to a degree too.

I don't really like combat patrol becoming its own thing since that means the decent gray knight probably wont have the baby harness Dreadnaught

Between this, the long war box and the talons box, you can have an amazing csm army from scratch for relatively cheap

To an extent they are designed to be easier to paint? Particularly b/c they have mask/faces rather than faces.

The veterans of the long war box is by far way better then the other one. With the nerfs on the accursed cultists.

Getting the two battle boxes plus a forgefiend and then whatever other models I want to fill any points gaps is the way I’m going with it.

I'm no expert but the combat patrol looks very missable to me 🤷🏼♀️

Every single CP could use either one more cheap unit or swap out the cheap throw in unit(the cultist) for a heavier costed unit to fullfill that 500 point threshold and give that much more of a savings. I genuinely believe if GW did that most people wouldnt complain about how devalued the CP have become. Might as well have upgraded the cultist to the accursed cultist at least. Charging the same price for less points in the box is wild. At least reduce the price down to the AoS Vanguard, now Spearhead boxes, This is still a solid box, models wise, but the points arent there. The Master of Possesion is the only thing saving this box honestly amd youre getting it for free. Anyone should be able to buy two of these and make a quick 1k point army. That should have still been the criteria
As somebody who really struggled when i rejoined the hobby to originally understand that a CP was a discount box and not an "out the box game" im happy they are doing this with CPs
Yo these new chaos models look incredibly cool! Can't wait for all the new black legion. I might grab a box or two of these new models and paint them up as my deathguard warband.
Wayland had 28 copies of the old CSM CP this morning, by the time I placed my order at tea time they were down to 3, a couple of minutes later all gone! They are still up at other stores but only generally those offering less than the full 20% discount.

I wish the MoP was replaced with a chaos lord, otherwise I think the CP is very solid.
The second of the box sets is decent, as a starter for a marine heavy army, cultist spam is a personal irritation for me in the first box set though.
This better mean that the Master of Possesion is getting a reissue.
You can buy him individually right now. GW finally released him solo a short while ago.
New Combat Patrol is certainly not a bad box. The main issue is that it locks you into a daemonic build for your army. If you had a different vision for your Long War then you're outta luck!
I feel like they showed the Combat Patrol off slightly by accident. It's only on the Twitter post, and they showed it instead of the Veterans of the Long War box. There's nothing about it in the Chaos reveals article.

Should have swapped Legionaries with 2 oblits. Then this combined with that warped talon jump lord box would be a cool army together.
It's a terrible box, because theres way better options for the cultists. Cultists are 40eu for 10 easy to build models. So bad. Previous box was better. All new Combat Patrols in 10th will just be worse then 9th due to removal of ''big'' units / vehicles. The standard Space Marine one especially is a crime.
As somebody with Both a Word bearers AND a night lords army, Yeaaah, im probably getting both of the battle boxes. Would absolutely love if May was somehow the month I won the give-away, but at this point im sort of just committing to spending like 450-ish dollars. Heres to hoping by the time I get them all painted GW doesn't tempt me into starting emperors children.
So if the trend is to remove the big thing, the next greyknight CP will basically the same as now just without the dreadknight... maybe not a libririan in there but Crow or voldus left as HQ.
GK have basically 2 sets and 2 models that are GK specific that could be in that box... kind of laughable 😅

So, out of curiosity, I punched all of these units into Auspex's affiliate for the country I live in.
When adjusted to USD they came out to around 174$ and the company included free shipping. That was without any promo codes or any additional discounts than the flat discount from the site.
So GW gave a solid 14 dollar discount totalling around 8%. What a generous and kind company.
Well when this releases you'd be able to get those same disconts on this box set on top of any savings just from the box. But yeah, 'savings' would be minimal if buying this directly from GW's webstore vs a discount retailer.
@@auspextacticsOh for sure. I didn't really mean it as a math check or anything, it was more or less to point out how shockingly minute some of the recent savings on these boxes have become. Particularly when compared to the old boarding patrols that were (at least for CSM) around 40% MSRP.
Albeit I say that fully understanding that the two of them were never really meant to be compared and have never been marketed as serving the same purpose.
As a chaos player.. im so happy with the model choices. Dread talons has literally 5 of the next 7 kits i wanted to add to my competitive list!
Man this should be a whole lot cheaper than the current box. The existing box is much better for army building and the old Start Collecting box was even better than it. I can honestly say I am not all that interested in this box. I got the MoP in the Start Collecting box but I guess those without him would want it. Also the current Combat Patrol didn't exactly have much of a long life.
I am fairly new to W40K, I thought that Boarding Patrols were a goner... I wish they re-released something like the Farsight + Crisis battlesuits boarding patrol with the T'au release

The Dark Apostle turned me off the old Combat Patrol box, seemed a little too Word Beary to me. This looks decent but I'm going to try for both battleforce boxes first.
Very understandable the chaos lord would have been the more versatile choice with the existing combat patrol. But I think the models are more flexible.
I just got the combat patrol myself and converted the dark apostle into a chaos lord (for my new word bearers). Made five of the legionnaires into chosen.
I spent ages magnetising the Helbrute.
Kept the legionnaires for other havocs.
I thinks it's a good place to start personally.
But I've got rubric marines to put in as battle line already.

as a long time chaos collector i am disappointed with this release and reveal, any chaos player in the hobby for more than 2 editions owns lords and jump lords (probably ones they converted themselves). Jump lord isn't a nice sculpt/pose, chaos lord on foot is nice and good to have multipart but is just a more versatile version of a model we have. The idea of 8 detachments also makes me worry that GW will never be able to properly balance the codex, so will either be nerfed after release or be constantly rebalanced which is not a fun place to be.
Pretty lame of them to nit put the new lord there, you know the reason is because the master of procession has a smaller sprue to cram in a bix.
Might also be because the new lord is in the battle force

I saw combat patrol this morning and got it mixed up with some of the battle force boxes. I thought the Demon Prince was also in the box. It still seems like away to get a lot of Chaos Marine mini’s.

If your army is made up of these basic units, I don't know how "unique" it was going to be in the first place. Either way, the units you choose aren't what makes your army unique, it's your paint schemes and the things you do with the models.

If the price is $210 that is a massive price jump from $160 for a CP box.

The thing is nobody plays combat patrol they just use it as an excuse to remove larger models
ridiculous this combat patrol... I got a start collecting oblis, venomclawler etc...
For me personally the new Combat Patrol sucks. I’m a newer collector and I already have 20 cultists and 10 marines from the Boarding Patrol with Abadon, and then another 10 marines from the old CP. Substituting the Helbrute and Havocs for Cultists is pretty insulting, and I understand that it should have marines but when they are shoved into so many other boxes they end up devaluing everything. 5 Possessed and a Master is not near enough for anyone who started even last year.
Honestly more cultists is more useful than more marines. You could always fit in a squad of cultist easier than the legionaries

I dont like combat patrols coming with non multi part kit models like dark apostles and master of possession. Kindv makes it not worth buying if you alreday have 1 it would be way cooler and be more versatile if it just had core units than you could buy whatever HQ you want or use already existing ones.

Everyone else has gotten one so far. I guess the test will be Custodes, they have so few units that a change to the combat patrol is least likely (I think they will change all except Guard/Votann/World Eaters though since those are the most modern)

@@calastyphon3414 it’s not about a discount though. It’s about having an army of your faction you can play out of the box. We are mixing the idea that this is a box for collectors to build up their army on a discount, versus an introduction kit for a new player into that army.

the new CP box has better looking models, the Helbrute is super ugly, but the points/discount cut is hard to swallow. I predict the Veterans of the Long War box will be very popular. the Talons box is alright in terms of looks, but there's way too many cultists in there

It would be pretty OK I guess, not stellar but decent enough. I think the biggest issue would be lack of transports and could use a deamon engine or so. Anyway, my few cents at least. For what it's worth ;)

Definitely a downgrade. Really disappointed with this reveal. They didn't even bother updating the raptor/talon kit. So you have a bunch of shorties running next to full size models in that jump pack box.

At least everything is playable in this at every point level, the helbrute and havocs in the previous box are justy plain bad in game or at the very least sub optimal while multiples of this combat patrol will actually be good for new players and there nothing in here that will just gather dust on a shelf.
Well we are getting a new codex so maybe helbrute will be good it would be super funny if the old patrol ends up being better
