I am a retired double bass player who switched to the much lighter violoncello while recovering from a stroke. Therefore, I continued my tuning by harmonics on the 'cello like I did on the double bass. It works well for me.

Since I haven't played cello publicly in years I use a tuner at home but I appreciate the tip to tune softly. That makes much sense

Perfeito! Muitos desprezam a distorção gerada pelo excesso de pressão do arco na corda...

I was taught to tune using the string's harmonics.. starting on A4.... is this incorrect?

I use a tuner app(pro guitar tuner) on my phone that works great, you can set it up for many different instruments and different tunes. It's so sensitive that you can play very softly and it gets the pitch fast and accurately. I've noticed that if you push the bow a little harder on the string the tune will shift just like when you bend on a guitar. It also helps me finding the higher notes further down on the fingerboard, I don't have to guess as much and I can fine tune my playing as well. I don't play so much from sheet and more by ear but when I do play from sheet it's a good help for me to find the notes and prevent me from learning wrong notes if I don't have backing track music to play along with so I can hear if I'm wrong.

Com certeza! Afinar do jeito como muitos afinam, grosseiramente, você não afina, mas desafina kkk 😅

Why not use a tuner to check after playing the open strings?

I was never taught to tune with double stops, just with a tuner app on the phone 🙈😅 now I "upgraded" my tuning by using the tuner only for open A, then using the harmonics on the following lower strings to tune accordingly. I wish to be able to tune by ear like you, I once my ears improve 👂 😅🙏

You will one day! Of course, we must train our ears. But it is a great option to tune it with a tuner app (that’s why it exists 😄). The point of this video is that I see many people tune the harsh way, and I want to avoid this. Because by tuning harshly, you don’t tune, it does something with the strings that the pitch changes 😅 Always play musical! Even by tuning 🎶🎻

Phone tuners are a great option! Personally I need it time by time, if I have to tune to 442, or 441, or 440. The point in this short video is to never to be aggressive when tuning. Always play musical, even when you tune 😄

how about when tuning with the orchestra - I guess it's best practice to tune softly as well? I'm just thinking that when everyone is tuning, hard to hear your instrument

Hi Monica! Absolutely not! Harmonics are a great way for tuning.
