I’ve just been checking out scenes from Wild Bill (starring Jeff Bridges) and even sitting alone in the privacy of my own home I felt uncomfortable over how bad the acting in that film is. Deadwood feels almost like real life, I cannot get enough of this show.
It's who Ricketts was based off. The ranch girl at the start Macfarlane was originally supposed to be Calamity Jane but they decided to make her the daughter of the farmer instead.
Wild Bill lived a hard life doing a bunch of jobs from wagon running to marshal in Kansas to working in the Civil War...takes a lot out of man, especially since health care was non-existence and diets weren't the greatest, and whiskey flowed like water
@Englewood Frank21 lol no. People have this perception that people didn't live long until like 100 years ago and it's nonsense. That's beside the point this isn't even that long ago. Even in the middle ages most people lived well into their 50s if they stayed healthy. The reason the average age of life expentancy was so low is because so many babies and kids died from various ailments. If you actually made it to adulthood you were probably going to live till at least 40.
Fool. He gave in to envy and got himself and an innocent man killed. A wise man befriends those he is jealous of, both to learn and be under their protection. Of course this only applies if the greater man is kind. If he means to keep you down its best to just stay away.
JOSEPH G. ROSA - THE WEST OF WILD BILL HICKOK - 1982 The book does not keep its promise. You will not discover the West of Hickok because there is no real description of it. Data and detail are only provided when they are attached to one particular picture and the pictures are essentially centered on people. But that does not provide us with a full coverage of the period, the region and even the actions of the people who are laboriously stilted into immobility. One example will be enough by citing General, who is not really a general, Custer. He is present in the book because he came across Hickok, but in a marginal way and his action against Indians is definitely not clearly both explained and exposed. It is alluded to. The same thing can be widened to Indian life, Indian rejection, Indian killings, etc. All that is anecdotal and superficial. We could say the same thing about the west itself, the farming, cattle raising, the economy of this west. It is not explained, nor exposed when necessary. The only thing then that comes out of the book is a sketch of Hickok’s life, and interesting portraits, photographic as well as other types of printed representations of people. Unluckily do not believe it is in any way some press photography of real life, events, actions, happenings or whatever. It is only the formal portraits of the people who have dressed up for the occasion and who stand in an unnatural and stiff way. It can only give some indication of how these people would dress on a special occasion, maybe going to mass on Sunday, maybe going to some local celebration like a marriage or a funeral. In other words it does not give us the feel, the smell, the looks even of this western life on the frontier. This is to be regretted because there would be so much to say about the various stages of Hickok’s life, including his period when he was a showman with or without Buffalo Bill. Skimpy; skimpy! Like a mouse dancing on a frozen lake, Mice Lake I guess, a ballet that could be interesting. But in the west, in Cody, in Bordeaux, in the Dakotas or Montana, in Illinois or Kansas, there is so much more to say. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
@@devilfacedjedi lol wouldn’t go that far, but when I saw him arrive as Walcott I thought he was still McCall, only he struck gold or something. Really weirded me out at first once I realized he was a different character.
It’s not bad. But not better than game of thrones. Nor breaking bad. Also, a lot of these episodes got repetitive, but not a bad show, especially if you’re into westerns. Not the greatest of all time though. That’s easy.
I've gotta say this edges Game of thrones out of the way. Just like the other fellow said the finale, shit the whole last season ruined the series for me. I watch Deadwood continuously it seems. I haven't watched GOT through but twice or three times. You do need to be partial to top tier dialogue. @EntropicMisanthropic Wild Bill couldn't shoot everyone though. He had enough trouble with the people he did shoot. That's part of why his character in this series was so awesome, like he was restraining himself constantly even though he really felt like killing people. Also, your username is awesome.
OK.the writers managed to devote an episode where Wyatt and Morgan Earp come to Deadwood. How EPIC would it have been if the writers had secured Val Kilmer for 1 episode reprising his role as Doc Holliday so he could have had a scene playing poker with wild Bill? And Kilmers voice issues would have been perfect considering Doc was suffering from tuberculosis.
i'm looking for the other poker scene where wild bill gives jack 1$ for a meal when he lost it all. the way jack said in that scene 'that man is overplaying his haaand' is so hilarious
@melvert33 That is what confused me to no end my first time through the series. Garret Dillahunt plays two completely different characters, which is unusual for any show. I almost thought Francis Wolcott was just Jack McCall's alias and excuse to return to camp when I saw it the first time, but after some research I discovered that David Milch just likes to reuse actors, and the two characters are not one in the same... Which is cool by me, because Dillahunt is a phenomenal actor.
After watching the entire series, I looked for anything else produced by David Milch to watch. I came up with a 12 episode mini-series, John From Cincinnati. Garret is in it. Also Dayton Callie (Charley Utter), and Jim Beaver (Ellsworth). Ed O'Neil is also in it, and while he wasn't in Deadwood, I've read he had been Milch's original choice to play Al Swearengen. That never came to be, obviously, and while I love Ed as an actor, he could not possibly have been a better Al than was Ian McShane.
This scene was surprisingly historically inaccurate. They made the death scene accurate ironically. According to records, Bill offered to buy Jack's breakfast and gave him some money which Jack took but it still upset him. Bill told him don't bet anymore unless he could cover his losses.
I love the insults on this show so much. If youre a modern day tv watcher who needs shit painted for you it'll fly right over your head. Each insult is set up like a hinged door you didn't see swinging back from around the corner lol

It may be a controversial position, but this show certainly did have some good acting.
Why is Hicock always depicted as a middle aged or older man?
He was only 39 when he died.
