You completely played on my emotion of curiosity to click your thumbnail and watch this video, which was a great video, crisp HD, smooth with the information, and helpful to the community. You are a rock star.
You can actually scan for tones on the original UV5R. You have to be in frequency mode, set a tone (any tone), save the tone and then go back into the menu for the tone and press the scan button on the keypad. You will see the CT on the LCD start flashing. Once the other radio keys up it will scan through the tones until it finds the correct one.
I like that you can add or remove things from channels without having to delete and resave the channel. Example adding or deleting a tone in a memory channel. Unless im mistaken the uv5r wont let ya do that.
Do you think you will pick up the UV17 Pro GPS version? While similar it is actually widely different from the 17R variant, such as the actual working GPS but also the way the menu works. I grabbed mine about a month ago and just recently got into programming it using a new modified version of it's CPS software, still waiting for Chirp to figure things out. Interestingly in the menu my radio shows "Hardware Ver: 1.30"
I am curious: will this radio transmit and receive on GMRS channels? Those frequencies seem to be within the range of this radio. I know one needs a GMRS License to transmit on GMRS Channels.
@@temporarilyoffline my UV-17R allows programming GMRS channels and repeaters as well as the 1.25 M band. It is a Triband Radio, not just the 2M and 70 cm band.
I wish it would let you create/save/name longer DTMF macros, so I could automate common Allstar commands. Anytone radios have this capability but they don't let you save asterisks in a macro, which kills it for Allstar! Thankfully they got this right in OpenGD77, a radio equipped with that firmware is absolutely great for both DMR and analog use.
Be real nice if they could clean them spurs up. Even if they had to charge another buck or 5 it'd be a real winner. Suppose they know their audience doesn't know or doesn't care though.
Place both radios on the same frequency/tones/etc and press the PTT on the side. Keep in mind that some frequencies are licensed and make sure that you have the proper equipment and licenses to operate on those frequencies so we don't anger our government.
If I understand your question right, yes it will. The chatter on the channel is encrypted, not the channel itself. As long as the channel uses a frequency and tone setup this radio understands it will copy it. What happens "in" the channel is a different layer
@temporarilyoffline What I learned about the scan feature is that the radio lacks attenuation. The reciever gets overloaded which causes the frequency inaccuracy. This could easily be solved with a firmware update. But for now you have 2 alternatives for accurate readings. 1st option is to set the squelch to the highest level before scanning. Again, this is a EASY firmware fix if they actually gave a damn. The 2nd option is to basically remove the antenna before scanning. Both of these tricks compensate for the lack of attenuation accuratly 99% of the time. The downside here is Baofeng doesn't provide firmware updates for their basic analog radios. Future radios may be fixed, but current radios are pretty much stuck the way they are. Maybe if we make enough noise about it someone will listen.
@@temporarilyoffline I gather you're still a big fan of the BTECH GMRS Pro? Looking for a GMRS radio and was sorely disappointed by the Baofeng UV-5R I got a year ago.
@@temporarilyoffline I just watched it (again). So many videos I lose track of some of them. I wouldn't buy one even for the legal uses you mentioned since you can buy a clean Retevis currently on sale for the same amount. But kudos for thinking about the positive aspects. Can you disable the transmit capability so you don't accidentally splatter everyone within a couple miles?

You're right, they improved the workflow here.
This is new territory, glad you covered this, I would have slept through these features. Now I really want one of these!
Glad it helped!
Just Got my Baofeng UV 17r for Christmas**** Love this, Radio. Thanks. Radio On.
Congrats! Time to have some fun!
Thanks for covering this! NOICE!
You bet!
Cool to see new features being added into Baofengs. 👍🏽
They will catch up to the big-boys fast!

Also the GPS model comes with AM air band receive (CPS also updated) has all the same features UV-17 Pro GPS excellent radios for the price.
Nice! Thanks for sharing

Chirp now supported. Fresh off the press. 🎉

i bought the -L variant and its the tri-band. I Love my radio. It look like you cant modify the squ in chirp. For the moment you have to load module.
Its a very new radio, I think Chirp will catch up quickly.
Chirp just released official support for UV-17 Series as of Turkey day.
What a great announcement!

It's the duel tx on two frequencies at once for me❤
That's how they get ya!
Nice review. Does it cover the GMRS spectrum?
You can listen to GMRS, but it is locked TX.
If you order from china you can buy unlocked. Just make sure its not the -R variant.
But if you plan on sticking purely gmrs, i will recommand Radioitty GM 30. Its better suited and much easier to operate.
I am GMRS licensed.
Thanks for the GM30 recommendation
Outstanding review. Looking forward to many more.
Thanks Michael! More to come!
The amazon link in UK takes me to UV5R

That DTMF feature is great for controlling Allstar and IRLP nodes.

I don't think there are many ham radio tranceiver makers that do listen.
