    If it wasn't shared already, I am having my Standard Tilt Apple Studio Display converted (Apple calls it "upgraded") to a VESA mount which is what I needed. Unfortunately VESA mount studio displays are on backorder until september but I needed it urgently for my work.
    The cost is:
    $119 - VESA Mount Upgrade Kit
    $79 - Hardware Repair - Level 1
    $79 - Upgrade Fee
    $277 Total (tax not included)
    My local apple store in San Diego said I am the first customer to inquire and start the process. The apple genius tech who helped me didn't even know how to start the work order process. Took a phone call to the store which gave me the wrong information and then physically driving to the store and another 30 mins with manager to figure how to find it in their system. It was placed as a work authorizatiom upgrade and to arrive in 3-5 days and I bring it in to install.

      I was received the VESA mount upgrade. Parts delivered to Apple in 2 days, however, they waited another 5 days for a specialty tool to come in (i actually knew about the new tool needed and "rounded 6 pointed star" screw head. I was surprised they didn't have the tool already since the release in March. And there other stores in San Diego didn't have it either. First customer in San Diego to do the upgrade process and it was successful and sexy!
      Total price with CA Sales tax was $294.32.
      Hopefully that helps anyone who needs the upgrade to VESA mount ASAP. 😁

    I’ve had mine since March 18th and it’s a fantastic display for working at home. It’s too expensive for the features but if you have the money and want a first party display that is less expensive than the Pro Display XDR, the studio display is fantastic.

    I think you’re absolutely right that the Studio Display was something else in another life. I think it was a failed attempt to make a 27” iMac/iMac Pro. I suspect it had something to do with thermals regarding the M1 Ultra, so Apple had to go back to the drawing board, splitting up the 27” into the Mac Studio and a separate display. I think if Apple had only released the Mac Studio to replace the iMac, people would have been terribly upset, so rather than starting from scratch, Apple just reused their 27” iMac by replacing the logic board with one hosting an off-the-shelf part they were already using. They needed an A-series with Neural Engine to run Center Stage and Apple was still making the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2, so the A13 with 64GB was the natural choice.
    In an iMac, this would have been considered impressive engineering. In just a monitor, it’s overkill and overengineering.

    Apple ditched display controls with the 2nd generation of the Cinema Displays starting in 2008 and with the Thunderbolt Display that followed. Nothing really new here as Apple's DNA is minimalist design.
    As far as the power cord is concerned, how many times do people have to remove the cord from the display? I prefer having the power supply in the display vs having another power brick on the floor especially if your using a thunderbolt or usb-c hub which have external power bricks cluttering the floor.
    If you're buying Apple stuff, you're always paying more unless you're buying refurbished items. Dell and HP displays are always less expensive but 4K and not 5K.
    In closing, Apple users wanted a display similar to what was provided in the 27 inch iMac. Apple listened and delivered on this. If you don't like the price there are other options without the Apple design form factor.

  • @BookClubDisaster
    @BookClubDisaster 2 роки тому +3

    Your point about overbuilt is valid but I think there’s a larger strategy here. They want to entice people away from iMacs and towards this display paired with the Mac Studio or Mac Mini. I actually think they might want to slowly phase out the iMac altogether. With desktop computers so compact and sleek compared with the bulky towers of yore, the all in one’s space saving advantage becomes minimal. And an all in one is a compromise offering laptop components in a desktop. But if you replace your iMac with this setup, you need to feel like you didn’t lose anything in the exchange. Hence the need for a built in camera and speakers just like iMacs have always had. So a no frills (and cheaper as a result) monitor just wasn’t going to happen.

  • @olavivalli

    I’m sorry but what part of north of 2k is ‘mid range’? Also, asking Apple to design a ‘less expensive’ version is akin to asking Mercedes if they could make a cheaper car that was the price and materials of a Vauxhall but still a Mercedes. In my view this monitor is great, but equally this is a luxury item. If you don’t need it, you can buy the cheaper alternatives. If you have the cash, enjoy it. Same as any luxury item really.

    Totally agree. If they had just concentrated on the monitor and forgot the fancy speakers and Webcam which 'studio' users already have, and left out the A13 chip which is just more to go wrong they would have had a killer monitor ; thinner, thinner bezels, and an adjustable stand so that users don't get stung with an extra $400 just to save their neck pain. Missed opportunity .

They’re exactly the same design choices, aka, no buttons, no vesa option, solid aluminum construction, and outrageously priced. I’ve been using the Cinema Display for 11 years now and I absolutely love it. I never needed a VESA or buttons etc. It’s awesome. And looks like so is this new one. It’s hideously over priced, but if you want a 5k screen with 218ppi there is no other choice but the LG equivalent which is also expensive and wobbles when you type. I have used a 27” retina iMac for 8 years, and any other screen just seems inferior, so for me personally anything else is a downgrade. I don’t care about the build quality, so long as the thing doesn’t wobble, or the looks, or the camera or the sound, or the size of the bezel, but I DO care about the image quality and the 218 ppl and the 27” size

    • @messicomps344
      @messicomps344 8 місяців тому

      Overpriced relative to what? It's expensive, but overpriced insinuates that 5k displays can come in better deals. Samsung offers an inferior overall package at the same price. LG offers a less attractive display with much less features at 200 less and it's much older. It's expensive but not overpriced

      I think the Samsung M8 is more flash with lots of bells and whistles versus a true prosumer monitor such as the Studio Display. Also I’ve owned Samsung TV’s as well as appliances and I’m not impressed. So much that I refuse to buy a Samsung product.
      Speaking of appliances when I was looking for a refrigerator…two well known big box stores steered me away from Samsung. I’ve found LG to be a better brand for appliances and monitors as I owned the LG UltraFine as Apples approved stand-in prior to the release of the Studio Display.
      All said the Everyday Dad’s take on the M8 would be interesting.

      Yeah but it is faster than the 27 iMac even with a basic 450$ discounted m1 mini? So for 2000$ you get the “base model iMac Pro”. Except you can actually swap out the brains with a Studio down the line without opening up the display.

  • @jessechuff
    @jessechuff 2 роки тому +1

    gotta say I do agree it is a bit over-built, however I really like not having a big power brick for a display. Partially because I have a cable organizing rack under my standing desk and having a big brick in that rack will take up so much space (it was when I used my previous monitor) and if I have it hanging out, it poses a problem of it weighing down the cable when I have the desk raised. Sure they could make a longer cable, but I have the cable rack there to minimize cables dangling under the desk and I feel like the studio display designers were conscious of that.
    I would definitely have liked a power button, but I really don't mind there being no other controls. And yes, not being able to change the stand is a bummer, but at the same time I feel like most people know what they want from the display and likely won't feel the need to change it if their workflow and process is relatively concrete. And in general it just feels like a minor problem (and not a problem for me) after having it for months.
    All that said definitely appreciate this overview! Ultimately agree with the problems you have, but for me I think the positives just massively outweigh any negatives. Especially the fluidity and integration with apple products.

But could serve as a central monitor in a multi monitor setup. Although, if the camera is only as good as the Macbooks', then I don't understand why it's even there. We can just bring out our phones for better video conferences.

    Nice video! I initially watched this a while back but have left my comment till I bought my own Studio Display. I had previously been using a pretty nice ViewSonic ultrawide. It was targeted at video game designers so is part of the ColorPro line, it has nice colour, 100hz FreeSync and 34".
    I work as a graphic designer and also have adhd, so I'm always on the look out for something I can buy that will stimulate the dopamine but also improve the work I do. I agree with a lot of what you have said. Whilst it's a lovely panel, love the colour profiles, the panel sharpness and over all increased colour over my previous, I don't think it's worth the price, although I did pay it as there just aren't many decent alternatives for professionals.
    The 27" is something to adjust to, but have a secondary monitor in portrait to fill that need. I use the Studio Display with the vesa mount which in my opinion is the best option as you can always buy a vesa mount desktop stand and save a lot of cash but still have the flexibility to move it to a different desk or what not.

If you buy a bottom of the range McMini and their monitor it is about $400 more than the old bottom of the range 27 inch iMac. Maybe me being a designer/developer has made me very aware of the pixel imperfections. At 5k, my studio display is way smoother than at 4k . But I still want it cleaner. I want to be able to see an even clearer cleaner picture. There is certainly scope. Time for 7k/8k displays to become mainstream with 500 PPI.

    Bravo - you just hit the nail on it’s head. Couldn’t agree more - it’s got very good sides and very tempting product and at the same time it’s got so many bad sides for this price. Utterly utterly frustrating. One of the most frustrating products Apple made in years IMHO

    Agree with you that it's overpriced and over-engineered. Mine was delivered on 3/23. I was torn about sending it back (I was still within Best Buy's return window) but finally opened it yesterday. I'm happy (so far) and glad I didn't send it back, but... you're right, it should have been simplified and cheaper. Was this design originally intended to be a 27-inch iMac? Did Apple start producing parts for an iMac and then change course? I don't mind the built-in power supply, but would have gladly accepted a power brick *if* it also featured an ethernet port. Permanently-attached power cord isn't a deal-breaker, but Apple needs to re-think this strategy in the future given the prevalence of standing desks. Speaking of power... Apple should have put a power button on the Studio Display or "soft power" on the Magic Keyboard to start a MacBook Pro in clamshell mode. Soft power was one of the best features on old Macs!! Great video!

    iMac is thinner than that monitor and it has a power brick connected to MagSafe removable power cord. It almost feels like Apple was trying to make the successor to the 27 inch iMac but they realized it would cannibalize the Mac Pro line. If Apple remakes the studio monitor so it would basically be an iMac without the Mac inside and have easily changeable stands and can use standard VESA mounts, and a bit cheaper, it would be the ultimate monitor.

  • @DominicFrohlof
    @DominicFrohlof Рік тому

    Dunno why you're so negative about it. Why do you need buttons ON the monitor when it PERFECTLY integrates with the media keys on the keyboard (brightness and volume)? Makes absolutely no sense. VESA option is available and I got it, works amazing with a $100 arm. Perfect flexibility and clean desk. Love it.
    In almost 1 year of using I never had to pull the power plug for hard reset, even though I'm daily un/plugging my MBP. This thing just works.

    I have seen the argument that you get a nice aluminum, solid display instead of cheap plastic and a wobbly screen. That is true but is it work an extra $1,000? A Dell Ultrasharp 27 inch 4k for $350 (I bought these many years ago - they're $580 today) is a compromise but it does what I need it to do. I personally wouldn't spend more than $500 for a monitor and I paid $100 for the last one and got a computer along with it (2010 iMac 27).

    • @mendodsoregonbackroads6632
      @mendodsoregonbackroads6632 2 роки тому +1

      I would spend the extra thousand for the aluminum build, built in camera, speakers, and Mic, but probably not the extra $400 for the height adjustment. I sort of did that already by dropping $2,100 on the 24” iMac but it’s also a computer.

I love this monitor so much and yes here in the UK £1500 is quite a lot of money for sure I'd make the same purchase decision over and over again.

  • @sambowks

    The panel tech inside seems to be at least 7 years old. I The speakers are never going to replace external speakers, the webcam is average, the stand options are limited in function, the connection options at the back are limited, the colour options are not pro level. Build quality amazing, but what's the point if the panel is average. Also, does something that sits still most of its life need such a high build quality? Look at Eizo, Flanders and real professional monitors, who's priorities are the panel and they have plastic bodies. Apple seems to have not learnt from its mistakes with the previous Macbook Pro's. Form first, function second. Priorities are totally inverted and the consumer pays the price.
    That said, I would not be surprised if there were plans to build more function into this monitor, using the processor etc inside. Maybe an apple tv sort of function, something along the lines of Samsungs M7 range. Who knows
