The first two meals shown must have been for officers or special occasion. I served in the Navy. I’m a Cajun from south Louisiana. One day a cook, also from south Louisiana, put rice on the breakfast line and other cooks looked at him like he was crazy. Us Cajuns got excited at the rice and asked for fried eggs on the rice. When we sat at the table sailors of Asian/Pacific ancestry also sat at the table with us also with fried eggs on rice. We passed around a bottle of hot sauce looking at each other in surprise saying “you too?”. Us Cajuns at the time didn’t know others ate eggs and rice and those of Asian/Pacific ancestry didn’t know non-Asian people also ate eggs with rice. Others looked at us like we were crazy. We didn’t care because they didn’t know how good eggs and rice are for breakfast.

Sailor Dave, Officers in the Army eat the same food as enlisted soldiers do. We go through the same chow lines. Breakfast is pretty much breakfast. Sometimes made to order eggs, sometimes just scrambled. Usually some sort of meat, bread, cereal, biscuits and gravy. The dinner meal of steak and lobster was every Friday night in the DFAC in Afghanistan, Kuwait, etc. on the main bases like Kabul or Bagram. . But watch out for the Steak, I usually went through 4 forks it was so tough and you have to bring your own knife to cut it.

I've spent almost 21 years in the US Army infantry (I will have over 21 by the time I'm fully out) with 53 months of what is considered 'combat deployments' (Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, ect). Little known fact that, despite the chow hall serving food (and it rarely looks that good while being stateside) the actual service member still pays for it. Part of a Soldier's entitlements is BAS, Basic Allowance for Sustenance. That usually rates around $350 a month for most Soldiers.
Now, I don't know about you, but the wife and I spend roughly about $400 a month on groceries and we eat really well, maybe not steak every night, but way above average. Imagine what a single Soldier could get. But I can't count the number of times my Soldiers have been given nothing more than a hard biscuit, two strips of bacon, and a small spoonful of grits as their 'daily morning ration' for lack of a better term. The chow hall is the biggest scam that the military uses to NOT pay Soldiers for food.
If given the chance, because it's a long and ridiculous battle to try and get your Soldiers their money instead of the Army auto taking it, I would have all of my guys and gals off that crap. It's one of the most egregious hustles I've seen in existence to steal money from young people.

Ex Canadian military here and we're in something of the same boat. Around 2012 they wanted to charge me $650 per month for rations when I could shop at the grocery and eat well for $250. Like you say, not steak every night but a healthy diet.
Another scam they have here is they pay you a lot of allowances and benefits to bring your pay up to a decent level but only give you a pension based on your basic salary. So instead of 50% after 25 years it's closer to 40%. But hey, it saves money so the civil service can hire more of their college buddies to sit in an office somewhere so they think it's fair;).

It’s videos like these that really make me proud to be an American. Despite what the media shows, America is truly a wonderful country filled with diversity and respect. Now, in no way am I saying America doesn’t have its issues, but for some people to say things like, “ America is the worst country in the world” or “Most racist” shows how ignorant and ungrateful some people can be. I think some people forget how young this country is. America is only about 250 years old! The amount this country has progressed in such a short amount of time is absolutely unbelievable! I believe that as Americans we are constantly trying our hardest to make the US the safest, healthiest, and most inclusive place it can possibly be. God bless America and her people, from sea to shining sea. 🇺🇸

I love US of America and I know for a fact that we are the best country in the world, why? Because we have people from every country on the planet in one place unified and learning to live with each other rather than in pockets of separation. It's not easy but it's happening. It 's the people who are afraid of change, assimilation, and unity who continue to stoke and participate in racism and racist policies. Is there still racism here?, absolutely. Are we striving to overcome it and grow? Absolutely! We are going to continue to stamp it out because it is our weakness. The United States is a very young country that is not perfect but the push for unity while embracing individualism and the fusion of so many cultures at the same time is what is making us great. I am proud of us.

Because America is such a powerful country, there are so many anti-American forces out there trying to brainwash the American youth that America is a terrible place. It's only increased since the internet, and particularly since social media has taken off. These anti-American messages can spread like wildfire and corrupt the minds of the American youth. They want them to feel bad about who they are and where they come from. I don't know how it will happen, but I believe at some point there will be a renewed sense of patriotism in America, and across the West.

I spent 4 years onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier from 86 to 90. In those 4 years I had some of the best chow I had ever had. The bread was baked fresh daily along with every pastry imaginable. Fresh eggs every morning with real milk and fruit that was as fresh as you get from the market at home. Imagine the logistics of getting fresh fruit to a ship a thousand miles from land halfway on the other side of the earth. We would have steel beach picnics on the flight deck once in a while. Steaks grilling, chicken, bratwurst, sweet corn on the cob…they know that men are highly motivated by food and the best moral boosters ever is a good meal. Now, mid rats may just be some cold cuts and an open loaf of bread, but they feed us damn near around the clock. Probably 20 out of 24 hours has something offered. The forward mess deck had fast food. Burgers, pizza, fries, tacos etc.

If you serve a 2 year Army enlistment you will have 4 years of reserves when you get out. At least that was true when I was in back in the age of sail. Maybe they feed them better now, but I really had no complaints about the food. I also pulled KP many times. I never handled food. The cooks did that. KP's mostly mopped, scrubbed pots and pans, washed dishes, cleaned up the mess hall and did whatever the cooks told us to do (like clean the grease traps - ugh). I always tried to get dining room orderly. One time, I worked the officer's mess. They had it set up like a restaurant, where they walked in, sat down, and we took their orders off menus. We set the tables before they came in. They had tablecloths and cloth napkins.

Only on very special occasions do they get steaks. But there usually is meat at every meal. Sausage or bacon at breakfast. Maybe chili or sos for lunch. Then fish, chicken, or meatloaf. Fruit and veggies at every meal and bread of some type. Most food tasted good. But number one rule…if you take it you eat it. No leaving food on your plate.

Are you talking about the US Navy? As far as I am concerned the food was pretty good. It tappers a bit when you are coming up on a unrep and the fresh stuff is not so fresh, that being said I never had a day in the Navy when I said that is just gross. I only bought food for late evening snacks. Even when you were going on a midwatch they had food available for you before your watch.

Honestly the food at Camp Humphreys (except breakfast) tends to be pretty mediocre. Except they always have bulgogi and kimchi and the like for the KATUSAs so I tend to have that. The KATUSA snack bar is also really good but you have to pay for that. And in the field, lots of MREs.

The food depends on the military branch and where the food is served. The Marines have some of the worst options, especially in the field, and its significantly worse than what was shown (egg foam comes to mind)... although not nearly as bad as what you guys showed for South Korea. Lol. I had to stop the video when I saw the plate with the steak and lobster! lol. That's not the American military!! Lol. That might be at the Officers Club, but not in the chow hall. We did get a steak, maybe once a month, but it was always overcooked, and tough. Sometimes we got shrimp with it, if you want to call it that, but it was the frozen breaded type of cheap shrimp. Hardly any taste at all. I was in the Air Force, and although we did get some of the best food out of all the military, besides the Navy I guess, but it sure wasn't steak and lobster. Think more along the lines of a soy burger, covered in gravy, called it Salisbury steak, with some cheap imitation crab meat, which is just white fish, with a red dye on it. Lol.

Yeah those first 2 meals were most likely for high ranked soldiers above major. ALOT of times officers have their own Mess hall and alot better food is served. At least thats how it was when my dad was in.his capt could pretty much ask for anything and it was made for him while the others had to deal with whats made. Sometimes even generals had their own private chefs. They were considered some of the best cooks in the military and in america the cook competition is a huge thing. Ships and divisions will compete against each other to see who gets declared top cook.

My dad was army for 3 years during WW2 and after he was demobbed, he re-upped in the Army Air Corp. Then spent 20 more years in the Air Force until he retired on disability. He said one of the main reasons he went into the Air Corp was the food was so much better. Later he used to tell how they'd be on joint maneuvers in the desert. Air Force were all in air conditioned buildings, in beds and with good food and infantry was out in 100+ degree heat, sleeping on rocks and eating C rations.

Welsh rarebit (melted cheese on toast) is another cringeworthy memory.

They showed modern day food, you can not compare what the food was like in the US military back in WWII to what our troops get today. I was in Fort Gordon in 2004 and the food was pretty much like this (The lobster was not a frequent thing at all though, it was pretty much done once or twice a year on special occasions.) Steak was much more frequent at about once every two weeks, of course once you went to the field the food options drop significantly but whenever you are on a base, close enough to go to the DFAC it's just like shown on the video.
