You think it's underpowered? Well, the original 1977 Niva had only a 1300cc engine. Later increased to 1600, then 1700cc in the 1990s. I owned three or four of them. Slow, noisy and thirsty, but unbeatable off-road, and practically unbreakable. I had one with a 2 litre Alfa twin OHC engine, and it went like a scalded cat. Strong Italian influence in its design.
Worked as a mechanic at local Lada dealership and had a dozen or so of these off-road weapons, mostly given to me for free by people tired of fixing them, over the years. Used to play tag around the farm where you hit the other car they become 'it' and the chase continues. Excellent fun.

Geez, guys! The spare tire under the hood wasn't such a novel thing..most French cars did that and the reason is simple: theft protection (cause yes, full size spare tires were stolen in the 60,70 and 80s) cleanliness and good access...and that last point is, why it's done on the lada...that rear hatch is a hatch, thus it would be heavy to open with the added weight and where else to put it, when one wants to avoid crawling under your car during winter or in mud?
I've never driven a Niva. But I have another LADA VAZ 2110 car in my garage, exemplar of a 1998 model year. I don't ride it. It's just like a museum piece in the garage.
Hi - that was a very entertaining video, but unfortunately there's a few fundamental bits missing, mainly about the element of "unchanged for 37 years". As a matter of fact Between 1977 and 1993/4 the Niva 1600 was produced and only saw minor modifications to the ignition and carburettor, starting with 1994/5 the 1700cc version was introduced combined with fuel injection (borrowed from an Opel Ascona), which also sported a different tailgate, new taillights and substantial changes on the interior. In 1997 the EFI system was changed again to a more modern multipoint EFI and in 1999 the model M, which looks almost the same, but sports a dramatically changed undercarriage, with different axles, wheel hubs, brakes, driveshafts, you name it and THEN the Urban model came, which basically was "just" new bumpers and a different grill. If you're venturing towards Niva-based vehicles, you should also at least mention the APAL and the JAEGER. (Depending on market) Please see this as constructive feedback, I especially liked the footage of the AZLK-models as I've so far only seen pictures of them...
You can get that thing up the greasy pole. My grandpa had one, used it for hunting, to pull logs out of his forest, and most of those dirt roads are destroyed by tractors, the only thing that could get there. So many times I thought "that's it. This time we are not getting out", and that thing managed to pull us out. Sadly, he sold it couple yrs ago, and now I want another one :)
Asking a vehicle designed for off-road driving to meet the safety requirements of a passenger vehicle is ridiculous to say the least. This is not bought for the street and speeds higher than 80 km/h.
Nope. Niva is NOT an offroad car. Its rural or city car traded some comfort for ability to cope with wet dirt road or snow right in your driveway. It can easy make 130kmh or be used in dense 10M Moscow but if you try to use it as brutal Uaz it will break apart in a week.
@@antontsau Wrong, wrong, wrong. It was DESIGNED as a predominantly offroad vehicle (the name Niva means crop field in Russian). Full-time 4wd, short wheelbase, long suspension travel - that is no city car. I had 4 of them.
@@bernarddavis1050 Absolutely not. Niva is NOT an offroad car. Its NOT designed to dive into 1m deep shit, jump on rocks, follow tank column with colonel onboard or even be used on regular construction or mining site, it is not UAZ replacement. It can do all this but for very short time, then it goes to full rebuild or scrapyard. Niva niche was intended to be colkhoz (collective farm) dweller, using bad roads, snowy streets in a village, sometimes (but not too often) wet dirt roads, and to do all this with almost usual passenger car comfort, like Lada 2106 on which base it created. Not more. If it is used in offroad - very proudful end is imminent and fast, especially in USSR 70s, where Lada repair was extremely difficult and expensive. In reality it appeared that it is not only colkhoz car, but also an useful city car. Expensive, less convenient, slower, complex in repair, but able to combine everyday use in Moscow with summer drives out to fishing, hunting, dacha (farm cottage) and so on without terrible pain in all body parts like with road cars (2106 and so on). Even to drive out from own house yard in Moscow on winters often requires Niva capabilities, all usual cars bog in fresh snow piles without any options (ummmm, once I bogged even Zil131 6*6 truck in 30m from my home entry, where it stood until all snow melted, but of course it was extreme case). Yes I DO know Niva, I used them from 1990 to 2010 (effectively to 2000 when I changed to 4*4 Gazel light truck and Niva became just a spare car standing in garage), so there is no need to tell me how Niva can be used in real offroad, I perfectly know it - no way.
@@antontsau Lets put it that way: it's a utility car built for bad roads with very good off road capability for its class, albeit not an offroad SPORTS car. If you're some filthy rich sheik buzzing through the sand dunes of your emirate and want to impress the girls with some crazy stunts in a flashy car, you probably look for something else. But if you are a forrester, a hunter or a farmer that needs a good vehicle to get to any place you need to do your job, that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg, won't loose 50% of its value if there's a dent or a scratch and won't require some specialised computer tool to service it then the Niva might be just it. There's a reason for its success.
A jewelry of Soviet Union! s2 Take a look at Brazilian Gurgel BR800 too! Spare tire under the hood save space for cargo and is much more easier to remove then below the car.
Lada need to develop a GT car with a such philosophy. Light, simple, cheap to repair or maintain, with spartan interrior and without any flashy digital features - but for cruising on highways above 200 km/h
Its the most perfect engieniering marvel that you as a man can buy and adore, modify , tune , modify a little more , can go everiwhere , you can make it 3locked it already has central dif lock , its just beautiful.
@ 3:00 He says the Nivas "interior was identical to this model:" ...then shows pic of a Niva... So let me get this straight, the Nivas interior was practically identical to the Niva? Lol 😅 Go figure!
It reminds me the joke between astronauts into the space station. The proud American shows a flashy pen and says to the Russian "My Government spent 1 million dollars to improve this pen to write upside down" and the Russian replied "My Government spent not even one dollar because we have pencils that do the same job"
As far as I recall. They were amazingly capable offroad. However the rust worms liked them a lot. They had various problems but you had a fighting chance of fixing them on the spot. They were dirt cheap. That makes it a little hard to complain about not being as good as other offroaders. They were at least double the price - there simply were no alternatives at the price... I can't say I miss them. They got the job done... That's important to a lot of people. The Nivas could probably be sold around the world today for that very reason making a difference...

Incorrect, the Lada Niva never ceased production. Why? Because it's a simple and very capable off-roader, for which the parts are plentiful and affordable. Why would Western Sanctions be a problem? Quite hilariously, Lada just doesn't install the parts that they were importing, such as radios and airbags. Mind due, these are the "optional upgraded radios and airbags". Finally, they can always just import radios and airbags from China and India, both of which already produce them.

The thing is Lada should have come up with a new design years ago. They obviously have been just adding updates here and there, the Lada Niva came out in 1977 and yes Lada have had added some updates the thing is safety and emissions laws in the world have changed a lot since the late 70's early 80's .Im not a engineer but a new version of the Lada four wheel drive would need a whole new body and engine ,the body would have to be much stronger with safety additions like front and side airbags and the engine would need to be able to meet emissions laws by having say maybe a twin cam 16 valve cylinder head to reduce emissions all that would only be the start there would be the need for electonic stability control plus a whole lot of other add ons if Lada did such up grades and bought out a new Lada niva engineered for the 21st century after this war is over they could then start selling such a vehicle again. The current Lada niva however is passed its used by date .
There is another version of Niva, with a more modern design. This model was developed at AvtoVAZ, but General Motors gave the money. This Niva was called Chevrolet Niva, and now it is called Niva Travel.
The modern suv can not survive rough train so the older MODELS of 4x4 are much more reliable and powerful. Manual H and L is no more produced, thats why Lada is still around
There were changes, for one the engine in all models after 2004 was build by General Motors...bad error. The old 1400 cc engine was better and more durable.. it sadly could not comply with the new emission standards. Having said that: in as far as cars for rough terrain goes, this is exactly what it should be: the best thing on a all terrain vehicle is what it does not have, costs nothing and can't break.
Well Suzuki Jimnny Same class, better everything...In Russia it cost 3 million rubles , niva is 3 times cheaper. I wonder how much they both cost in other Japan or somewhere else
How is there no major changes? that's just bogus the Engine has been through many iterations, i own and daily drive a 1989 model, and have worked on 2000s models, there are many differences also, modern ones no longer have solid steel frame, it's some alloy with plastic, like modern cars
An incredible detail in the story that I discovered a short time ago, but that I could not get many details was the fact that Lada sold the rights to use the NIVA name to Chevrolet. That's why the car was called Lada 4x4 nowadays.
They didn't sell the rights to the "Niva" name, but the 4x4 system. AvtoVaz produced the Chevrolet Niva, while Chevrolet sold it, in a join venture called GM-AvtoVaz. Chevrolet was also the one to develop the Chevrolet Niva with the Lada Niva's 4x4 system as it's base. In 2019, ZvtoVaz managed to get full ownership of the join venture and incorporated it into itself. The reason why the Lada Niva was renamed to the Lada 4x4 was purely due to marketing. It was an attempt to get customers to focus on the Chevrolet Niva, the new product, rather than the Lada Niva.

Legendary car!
Had one about 30 years ago, still miss it!
The volkswagen Niva and the Lada Bettle are my favorite worlds of the car!

Take a look at Brazilian Gurgel BR800 too!
Spare tire under the hood save space for cargo and is much more easier to remove then below the car.
If you have a utilitarian approach to off-road mobility, this car makes total sense. With some updates it could be a great value for money.
I owned a 1992 model in Australia, one of the last carburettor models that was retrofitted with EFI
if you make a base car platform that can be expanded and optioned upon into many different type of cars, I'd say it's a huge success
In Russia we have interwheel differential locks for Niva. Automatic and, more recently, with manual engagement.
@ 3:00 He says the Nivas "interior was identical to this model:" ...then shows pic of a Niva... So let me get this straight, the Nivas interior was practically identical to the Niva? Lol 😅 Go figure!
The T34 of all SUVs!

2:56 Fun fact: the italian car "Fiat Panda" (produced from 1980 to 2002 without significant changes) had the spare wheel under the hood too.
An uncle of mine had one in the late 80's earlu 90's. Never complained about it and was a cool ride!
Fun Fact: Changes were indeed done, to the engine, boot door, rear bodywork, doors and door openings.

I think it's worth mentioning that they began making older models again because they can't manufacture their own modern parts, like airbags, and had to import them. Because of the war, they may still be making them 20 years from now.
Yeap! That's right!
What about other ladas that is ordinary modern cars?

Niva survives not because they can't make a more modern car but because it's a simple and capable off-roader with no competition in it's price range and will be always in high demand.
Wish I had a one in good running condition.

"why changing if it already perfect" - Soviet Car Engineer-
It's not. Russia had strong relationship with Italy in the 60-80. It's Italian Fiat technique also the design.
i have lada niva 2001, 80hp and i make it RWD, it was cool, i could drift XD, i love that car.
I really want to import one into the USA, 3 door model for me
The LWB pickup looks right, would sell well IMHO
i wonder if you could put a 22r in it
I love a, proper, farm truck.
Epic!
Such a pity they are not available in Ireland.

That was a good machine.
A high tech Niva? Was it ever made for road savety?
They broke down a lot . Parts were inexpensive. If it had bigger engine and better stability on the road more would have been sold .
Engine available 1.8 - its enough, but very rare aftermarket. Stability fixed by proper ammos and power steering, aftermarket too.

i want a lada dem
Better than the junk made by car companies in the west nowdays
I hope i have one some day ❤
The modern suv can not survive rough train so the older MODELS of 4x4 are much more reliable and powerful.
Manual H and L is no more produced, thats why Lada is still around
Why is Niva so good?. Because shit goes through shit!
Zombie apocalypse car
Nope. You mess it with Uaz
If only they made them with a straight-6
Would be nice to give it a high-tech 2L engine...... Japanese or German origin
Nah. It just can't accomodate such engines. Too powerful and will just break transmission
@PyromaN93 lots of Nivas with Toyota diesel engines and VW Golf turbo diesel engines here in Brazil says otherwise.
Salut my friend super car super video subscribe subscribe 👍👍🚗🚗🍾🥂🤗🤗
really love that car, best thing to come from russia
There were changes, for one the engine in all models after 2004 was build by General Motors...bad error. The old 1400 cc engine was better and more durable.. it sadly could not comply with the new emission standards. Having said that: in as far as cars for rough terrain goes, this is exactly what it should be: the best thing on a all terrain vehicle is what it does not have, costs nothing and can't break.
Well Suzuki Jimnny Same class, better everything...In Russia it cost 3 million rubles , niva is 3 times cheaper. I wonder how much they both cost in other Japan or somewhere else
Shame they only make it in left hand drive....
How is there no major changes? that's just bogus
the Engine has been through many iterations, i own and daily drive a 1989 model, and have worked on 2000s models, there are many differences
also, modern ones no longer have solid steel frame, it's some alloy with plastic, like modern cars
5:20 "NEVER HAVE ANY FAILURE" :D :D :D Said by a guy who never owned Niva hahahaha
You sure it's not a Soviet Fiat?
It also rusts easier than a brillo pad and I love it
An incredible detail in the story that I discovered a short time ago, but that I could not get many details was the fact that Lada sold the rights to use the NIVA name to Chevrolet.

If you're incapable of producing your product in sufficient numbers to satisfy demand and at a better price than your competitors, your product is NOT a masterpiece. It's curiosity, and nothing more.
Niva Trevel.
