    Thanks for all you do. Love learning the ins and outs of these amazing motors. I have a FD and my next project is taking it apart and rebuilding it for 450 ish HP but make it reliable and fun on the streets.

      You're very welcome!! that would be a super fun setup! that black FD I built awhile back would be in that HP range. The half bridge isn't needed for that HP number though. you can just up the boost a bit and make the same number with a stock/street port

    My 85 had the 1.1 with the 4 barrel carb and with the racing beat header kit I welded together for it and a crank power pulley it seemed pretty fast despite being just over a hundred horse power the main thing I loved about it was it loved highway cruising I've held it over 120 mph for over an hour on many occasions and once had it up to 145 before I lost my courage to go any faster, the smoothness at high rpms and ability to sustain high rpms was my favorite thing about the motor, still have the chassi but don't know what way im going with the next engine.

    Thanks for putting out education for this newbie. This means I have an odd duck 12A in my collection of derelicts. By the VINs I got an 81, two 82s and a 1983. The 83 became an un-car yesterday when I cut its VIN out. Hopefully I finish cutting it in half today for delivery up North early next week.

    I enjoy your channel, what I haven't seen much of is restomoding fb's with na renesis engine and gearbox, good for 240 hp, no mods. I think that hp in that body would be about right. Plus that 9000 rpm redline! I'd love to see you put one of those together. Another thing I'm certain that one of our big engine builders down here in Oz recommends using fd RX7 rotors in an renesis rebuild.?

    Wow thanks for the great response to my query on rotors! I have a half dozen rotors but not sure which they are Turbo or NA. You showed the difference with a magnetic level and your finger but I was wondering if I could get a slightly more standard dimension depth (ruler) of the pocket so I can tell if it is a turbo or NA since they weigh the same. Thanks! (your newest Patreon member) or maybe overlay the text on the video of the depth :) btw, I think a saw a video that showed a 'T' cast in the rotor near the bearing, but I don't know what years Mazda did that.

    • @RADPotential
      @RADPotential  2 роки тому +1

      Basically if you can confirm that they are both S4 or S5 etc based on the visual casting differences and weight. Then you just need to verify that one rotor is deeper than the other to confirm if it's t2 or NA the actual number isn't important. T2 will be a deeper cavity, NA shallower. As measured like I showed in the video

    Thanks for this video! So how do you find so many RX7’s and rotary vehicles? I have been looking for a while for a decent FB and can’t find one… I’m in Massachusetts… How do you find engines? Same thing I have been looking and nothing is to be found on facebook or anywhere else I look… I have a 73 Datsun 620 I would love to swap a rotary in.

    Good stuff, can you do a video about compression testing? I've been trying to sell a rotary vehicle, and the amount of bad info on the internet and forums is astounding, it would be great to have a comprehensive guide to show people. People think you should get 120+ PSI or the engine is about to "pop" while doing the bump test without the schrader valve installed.

    What do you think about using stock height rx8 apex seals with rew housings?

  • @user-kz5xh5nz9h

    You mentioned the 10A which came in the R100 here in the US. The rotors in it are identical to 1971 to 1976? 12A rotors except for the width. They used two side seals for each side of each face giving a total of 12 side seals for each rotor and 5mm thick carbon aluminum alloy apex seals.
    Question. What are these round inserts used in the groove just outside the oil control rings?

    Valve ( port timing) and turbos a large number of turbo and supercharged engines have negative valve overlap. The exhaust closes before the intake opens. What is the valve overlap on stock rotaries and is the turbo version different

    Is there any reason why an rx8 would have issues running the stock side ports in tandem with a peripheral port for the exhaust? Perhaps with Cosmo spec intake ports?

    • @RADPotential

      They would share the same balance, S5 NA will be higher compression. IE you can use an S5 T2 flywheel on S5 NA rotors and vice versa

    Is there a solid way to test compression of an engine out of the car? Without hooking up some custom mounting bracket with your starter? I'm doing a rebuild soon and would like to know my engine is running ready before putting back in the car for the second time lol.

    • @RADPotential
      @RADPotential  2 роки тому +2

      Yea. Just put your transmission on it out of the car to mount the starter and use a compression tester.

    What's the most power you can squeeze out of an NA series 4/5 setup?

    • @bhollow711
      @bhollow711 2 роки тому +1

      Depends, if I were you I'd PP it. Won't make crazy power but your powerband will be snappy and balance/rotor lightening and you can rev it to the moon.

    • @RADPotential
      @RADPotential  2 роки тому +3

      NA-6 port irons I have seen people make 250whp with big ports and lots of rpm, but that engine isn't going to be home under 4k.

  • @rx8tom
    @rx8tom 2 роки тому

    How high do you think the average rotary could rev to? What would break first?

    • @RADPotential
      @RADPotential  2 роки тому +2

      I think most people would run out of ignition vs exceed the balance limitations of the engine. I rev a stock balance late model full bridge 12a past 9k, boosted I think most people stay around 8-8500 on the street. Plus you will need a trans that can shift at that high of an rpm. Things to think about. I dont have a definite answer

  • @efaracing4000

    I always thought the rx8 rotors were 10.1 cr? Is it a tomayto tomarto scenario with 0 and 1? And im being silly😂 you should do a renesis rotor seal how to clearance vid and also is the renni apex shallow because the side seals take the beating?

    • @RADPotential
      @RADPotential  2 роки тому +1

      my chart shows 10.0. Now if there is enough carbon build up on there, you may be at 10.1 :) Really not sure on the Reasoning behind the apex seal depth and the tapered side seals on the renny.
