"Their minds have been brainwashed but their spirits are pure. I try to reach their spirits." You know, that's pretty deep - and beautiful. I'm so glad I got to see Sun and the Arkestra perform about a year before his death. It was a great show.
What a beautiful spirit and philosophy. Sun ra has done as much for music as miles or coltrane in my opinion. Some people dont take him as seriously because he doesn’t fit their paradigm but that’s exactly why he’s so important. He pushed boundaries as much as any musician I can think of and open doors for future generations to explore further than perhaps they would’ve without him paving new paths. 🙏 sun ra legacy
What a truly incredible man sorry non-man. Such calm knowing un-egotistical presence, clarity and intention. I guess not being mass populist was one of the reasons he wasn't murdered. He saw the enemy within and had one of the most unique ways of overcoming that? Such natural purity I'd be fascinated to know his background and how he arrived or was delivered as such.
I'm going to stick up for the interviewer. I find a lot of people conducting interviews always do them from an angle to raise their own profile. They also have a time constraints. The guy asked Sun Ra questions and let him answer. Instead of interrupting and asking inane questions.
Sun Ra is speaking very literally and seriously (with an appropriate amount of humor). There are angels and Ascended Masters who work to raise humanity's consciousness. I am sure he is and was what he said. It takes self awareness to truly know that one's nature is that of Spirit. Most of us are brainwashed to accept limitations. This is not necessary. Music like Sun Ra's can be used as a key to self awareness.
The interviewer is a product of society in what we should think, wear, eat, think, feel, laugh at, wear one's hair, taught threw generations, ignoring a huge part of life and observation. Sun ra is standing in an open field with all the animals, flowers, trees, rivers and sound. Come to the field.
@Rashan Sankofa - what an embarrassing statement - take a look at yourself - the interviewer happens to be ben sidran ( jazz musician, producer, educator, writer)he used the phrase "puttin in time on planet earth" in the interview, which is a title of one of his compositions - when sun ra spoke about mans limitations and failings,he was specifically talking about people like you - your spirit is weak and your mind is closed - caucasian speaking here
Sun Ra is a messenger of the imagination and he medium is more than just music. That is all that matters. All this talk about his" mental state" is irrelevant. His gift to us is a wondrous thing. It challenges all of our belief systems. How refreshing compared to all the cookie cutter hipsters with waxed beards save one creative bone in their heads. And no… the interviewer is not "brainwashed." He is correctly respecting Sun Ra and giving him room to be who he needs to be. That is the mature choice and obviously it is the best way to get Sun Ra to talk. Sheesh…
spirit animal he did but he kept the perfect- balance you see? more of a jocoserious character .. so- that you can’t discern whether or not he is telling the truth or not.. or being serious it draws you in.. and that’s what he wanted :)
The man is an Angel and what he says is true his music is true especially the Doowop stuff from the 50's he knows that the Gods of Antiquity were Aliens also. The Truth !
Angels are more like extra-dimensional beings rather than extraterrestrials (the way aliens are portrayed) although beings from other dimensions can inhabit human bodies. Instead of being from outer space, angels or gods are beings that exist right along side and among us but exist beyond the veil of space and time that we can perceive (the material 5 sense world). I’m not saying there aren’t extra terrestrials (beings from other planets) and that they haven’t visited in the past. I’m just pointing out your confusion of gods/angels and ET’s/aliens. One is inter-dimensional and one is extraterrestrial.
This is something a majority does not understand. Sun Ra was not nuts at all, he understood his purpose here on earth, and found a way to help others through his music to understand it as well. It wasn't about him, it wasn't even about the music, this is pure intelligence manifested through form. He puts it very clear in this interview, yet the majority are to brainwashed to get it, perhaps some are more vulnerable to simply feel it. His message was larger than life that majority experiences
It is remarkable that Ra, who could say the strangest things and make the strangest sounds and wear the strangest clothes, could always make "sensible" people seem the biggest fools of all.
Indeed man's nature is that of Love, Peace, Wisdom and Power. I would humbly add that actually nature is a vehicle for Spirit. That Spirit is the Divine Life within nature.
THE SECRETS OF SUN RA.PEOPLE THOUGHT HE WAS CRAZY BUT HE MADE A WHOLE LOT OF SENSE IF YOU REALLY LISTEN.WHAT HE KNEW WAS THIS LIFE WE LIVE IN ACTUALITY IS NOT REAL BUT A MATRIX.WE ALL COME FROM PLACES UNKNOWN.OUR TRUE NATURE IS SPIRIT AND NOT THIS HUMAN FLESH WE ARE STUCK IN.SO YES SOME OF US MIGHT BE ANGELS.
Thinking about Sun Ra makes me depressed because I miss his prescence here on Earth. The world has become darker ever since Sun Ra and Jim Henson were great visionaries and great renaissance men who left the living too soon and I want them back. -R78
@infinitemystery33333 no I never knew Sun Ra was celibate but it doesn't surprise me. He was on quite a journey. I was blessed to have seen him twice, once in 1985 and once in 1989. I'd say RIP but something tells me he isn't resting--where ever his spirit may be, he's still hard at work.
@infinitemystery33333 I completely agree. when he says that he's not worried about reached people's minds i mean, if you don't get that you don't get sun ra and what he stood for. A man like this is easily ridiculed because of his uniqueness and individuality but thats the problem with the world... the fear of the individual. and also, i think you're right sun ra's essence is floating around inside Madlib's head!
99.9% of people who said "i'm not a man, i'm an angel" would sound like a nutso egomaniac. Some how he makes you almost believe it. While i'd had heard a couple sun ra albums by then, i first heard that from a sample in a vaporwave song, which fit so well because the music itself was quite ethereal.
the sound of joy is enlightenment space fire truth of enlightenment --- sun ra on spirit sound ! -- he is out there - vibrationally in tuned on scales inter-galactical here by, we do invite you, to be of our space world . . .
I could never figure out if Ra was pulling our leg or not. If he was, he never broke character. Did he REALLY believe he was from Saturn? No idea...maybe he did. Heck, maybe he WAS. lol
that interviewer almost made me throw up. Its always weird when one man is talking about space and being an angel and from saturn and its the other person that looks crazy and ignorant.
@infinitemystery33333 O... my goodness, I was looking for UFOs flying in the sun and I see this black guy with space glasses and checked him out. He was on another level and I'm happy I found him.
If you’re a jazz fan, try Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra or Languidity and say the same thing. Yeah some of the farther out stuff is not for everybody but those are pretty traditional and should “swing for” ya if nothing else.
Sun Ra would tell you to laugh at this conversation. You are romanticizing mental illness. It is not such a great thing as you make it out to be. I have a lot of mental illness in my family some of which I share as well and it is not as great as you make it out to be. Mental illness is not based on sole opinion, but facts built upon over many years and professionalism. Depression is a mental illness created by distress of any sort which leads to or can be influenced by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Sure, we can look at mental illness as a "different perspective" but unless you are referring to a mental illness you share a background with, that is a very insensitive thing to say. I would not call that perspective beautiful. Maybe ask my uncle how schizophrenia improved his life. He gained the "ability" after smoking too much meth.
What I'm getting at is that you shouldn't underestimate schizophrenia as something as simple as a perspective. Psychology isn't the only thing that plays its hand here. Social Psychology, Behavior Analysis, several branches of Neurosciences, many different types of sciences also have their influences. The literal definition of illness is: a disease or period of sickness affecting the body or mind. It need not be physical. Also, reading through my reply, it comes off as angry, but I only meant to be insightful as to how your wording could affect others.
Sun Ra used to behave like that . And, specifcially taking about this interview, this stupid interviewer does not deserve to be saw ... wouldn´t deserve even to be heard ... I would look deep into his eyes but Ra was like laughing inside. Few people in this world could really understand and respect Sun Ra.
Who's here because you just decided to watch a Sun Ra interview?
"Their minds have been brainwashed but their spirits are pure. I try to reach their spirits."
You know, that's pretty deep - and beautiful. I'm so glad I got to see Sun and the Arkestra perform about a year before his death. It was a great show.
wowow youve seen him live ive seen the band recently
I understand him completely. He is a beautiful angel soul
Was ready to see people in the comments making harsh judgements on Ra, so nice to see his music attracts higher frequency people.!!
"I use my music as a bridge for them to walk across the void." ~ Sun Ra
Sun Ra changed my life
U bet. And always bet on RA
🙏 sun ra legacy

being asexual might have had something to do with it. none of the distractions of mating that most regular deal with
@@MrJadePinwheel I wish I was asexual.
He might have been an alien.
I really miss hanging out with Sun Ra when he would come to Chicago
You told me to watch this bless up OG
I'm going to stick up for the interviewer. I find a lot of people conducting interviews always do them from an angle to raise their own profile. They also have a time constraints. The guy asked Sun Ra questions and let him answer. Instead of interrupting and asking inane questions.
2:07 for the Angels bit

This right here. Accurate.

it draws you in.. and that’s what he wanted :)
I can't wait until he comes back from Saturn.
Who here typed in "well im really not a man you see im and angel" after listening to emune gretchen
Sun Ra. What a wonderful man!
I'm here thanks to Lovecraft country, my mind is blown. This is amazing.

Hands down, no one can approach Sun Ra.
that interviewer almost made me throw up. Its always weird when one man is talking about space and being an angel and from saturn and its the other person that looks crazy and ignorant.

You want me to explain more?
Most people in this comment section are in a Trick Bag annd are as fearful, and far gone as the interviewer.

The face of disbelief. .
@infinitemystery33333 O... my goodness, I was looking for UFOs flying in the sun and I see this black guy with space glasses and checked him out. He was on another level and I'm happy I found him.
His music didn't swing for nothing, and he talked B.S gibberish.
If you’re a jazz fan, try Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra or Languidity and say the same thing. Yeah some of the farther out stuff is not for everybody but those are pretty traditional and should “swing for” ya if nothing else.

He is likely schizophrenic, but there is a crossover between that illness and creativity.
***** It's a mental illness that makes people hear imaginary voices. Please don't be silly.
***** The same can be said of any illness, mental or physical.
Amy Graham Beautiful perspective.

do you know what's the interviewer's name?
@infinitemystery33333 woow, did he ever have a wife
the interviewer was rude... if he found him too far out he still should have respected him as an elder. I like what he had to say, myself. :)
