  • I deliberately bought a faulty one of these (for very little money) so I could take it to bits and see how it worked. I downloaded the service manual but the English was virtually impenetrable (though the diagrams were useful). So I came over all public spirited and made this light-hearted video for the benefit of anyone else puzzled by one of these curious little bits of somewhat over-complicated technology. Respect to Huey Lewis and his News.

Thank you Mr. Webster. I didn't even understand how to disassemble my TT-451 until I watched your video. You have provided a great service to the amateur repair guys in this world.

Thank you for posting this! I was able to get my father’s old TT530 playing again. He bought it in Japan in 1980.

Hi Roger can you please give me some advice? My TT873 works, the plate runs but when I press play the arm goes all the way untill the end of the record and goes back to the rest position, never descending to the vinyl. Just goes back and forward but not descending as due to happen. Bought it second hand and never worked... Many thanks

Hi Roger, Fantastic work. I have TT 525, I guess just one model previous to TT 530. The arm is not moving, where does it come from according to you ? Many thanks

Brilliant! Just got a TT551from my friend today, powers up but none more tested today yet.
But how does the volume control function? Does it need to be hooked up to a separate unit for line-out?
I have a suitable candidate for a direct conversion for built in volume-control speakers, but if i can get it running any easier, all tips are welcome.
Great vid, massively helpful repair help and perfect selection of music i might add. 👍

Hi - so far as I recall it was just a turntable - no volume control. Maybe you are looking at a combo with one of these incorporated?

@@rowe481 Yes indeed, i investigated further and feel a bit brighter now.
New area of tech for me, born into the CD-generation as a kid, the stereo i have now for vinyl is an all-in-one National Panasonic from 1973.
But i might get the Marantz tested through a hookup with an casette stereo unit i have, they both are roughly from the same era as well.
Will be interesting to see if it functions!
      Thank you for your reply!

Roger, what is the model of the central motor ? Also, what is the model of the servo actioning the tonearm platform ?

Do you know how difficult it is to replace the record size lamp? (and, what type bulb it is?) I have one of these, but the bulb does not light any longer. thanks for your help great video

Hello Jeff - I don't have the deck or the manual any longer - as I recall the lamp housing was easy enough to get at. If you download the manual from Vinyl Engine (free to join) you should be able to get the part number and search for that . Good luck with the repair!

i have a TT 520 and the sound is pretty distorted... cartridge is brand new, any ideas?

The tonearm pivot assembly is pulled along on a little 'sledge' by servo motors. If the drive belts from the motors are slack or slipping, that might cause distortion at the stylus tip - the tonearm would look like it was being 'left behind' as the stylus tracks the record ......but you'll have to take it to bits to find out - hope the vid helps!

Roger Davie Webster i think it was a dirty record! But I found out that the tonearm is indeed being left behind, as it gets stuck every few minutes - even on a brand new record! I just don't know where to get a new belt
